Jermaine Jackson became the original lead singer of an earlier incarnation of The Jackson Five until 1967, after which he and his brothers signed with Motown Records. From then onwards, Jermaine Jackson acted as the co-lead singer of The Jackson Five, singing notable parts in numerous famous songs including I Want You Back, I'll Be There and I Am Love.
In the 1980s Jermaine Jackson converted to Islam following a visit to Bahrain where he became inspired by the religion. In 2007 he entered the Celebrity Big Brother UK house and was commended for the moral support he gave to fellow housemate Shilpa Shetty against the alleged racist bullying from fellow housemates.
Currently Jermaine Jackson is involved in several charity projects to help orphaned children around the world. Among other countries, he has visited Bangladesh as part of his work to raise funds for children. In addition he is planning a stage show based on his family to be released in the UK and in a number of interviews he has said that The Jacksons are recording an album and are in the process of planning a family tour.
Civil Rights Activist and President & Founder of Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, USA
The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson is one of America’s foremost political figures. Over the past thirty years he has played a pivotal role in virtually every movement for empowerment, peace, civil rights, gender equality, and economic and social justice. Often dubbed as the conscience of the nation and the great unifier, Reverend Jackson challenges America to establish just and humane priorities.
Reverend Jackson began his activism as a student and continued as a young organizer for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, acting as assistant to Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1971 Reverend Jackson founded People United to Save Humanity (PUSH), promoting economic empowerment and the expansion of educational and employment opportunities for the disadvantaged and communities of color. In 1996, PUSH was merged with his later formed Rainbow Coalition, to form the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. In addition to the ideals of PUSH, this new coalition was enhanced to promote political empowerment, education and to improve public policy.
In 1984, Reverend Jackson became the second African American ever, to mount a nationwide campaign for President of the United States, running as a Democrat. Many people will argue that in the context of the current US Presidential race, Barak Obama’s success could never have happened were it not for Reverend Jackson’s presidential campaigns that broke new ground in US politics.
A renowned orator, Reverend Jackson has received numerous honors for his work in human and civil rights and for non-violent social change. In 1991, the US Post Office put his likeness on a pictorial postal cancellation, the second living person in history to receive such a tribute. He has received honors from more than 40 honorary doctorate degrees and frequently lectures at America’s most prestigious universities. He is the sole author of two books: Keep Hope Alive and Straight From the Heart and has co-authored Legal Lynching: Racism, Injustice, and the Death Penalty and It’s About The Money! In October 1997, Reverend Jackson was appointed by President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as Special Envoy of the President and Secretary of State for the Promotion of Democracy in Africa.
