Ex-Jackson 5 star visits home
THE orphans of Asrama Damai Anak-Anak Yatim Kuang in Rawang, Selangor, had a celebrity visitor recently in the form of Jermaine Jackson, a key member of legendary American pop band, the Jackson 5.
For the uninitiated, the 54-year-old singer/songwriter/producer is also the older brother of pop superstar, Michael Jackson.
During his visit, Jackson, who was accompanied by his wife Halima Rashid and the central committee of OrphanCARE, a newly-established non-profit organisation aimed at being the transit centre for orphans and abandoned children before their adoption, spent a few hours chatting heartily with the children.
The children were excited to meet the affable pop star and his wife.
Not a publicity stunt:
Jackson and Halima at the orphanage.
Jackson has pledged to use his celebrity status to help poor children all around the world through his charity foundation, Earthcare International.
“I love children and I come from a big family myself. There are eight of us – six boys and two girls,” the proud father of seven said.
“It’s the children’s joy and innocence that always moves me. They are pure and real,” he said.
Describing his charity work as God’s work, Jackson, who converted to Islam in 1989, said he wanted to be the best that he could be.
He also encouraged more celebrities to step forward and put their fame and wealth to work for good causes.
“It’s our way of giving back to society,” said Jackson, slamming critics who think celebrity do-gooders like him are out to get free publicity.
“It’s not a publicity stunt. I personally do not need publicity from the children. I just want to put a smile on their face,” he said.
There are 118 kids, aged between four and 18, living at the Asrama Damai. The privately-run orphanage is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and welcomes donation in cash and kind from the public.
