Jermaine Jackson, the fourth child of Joseph and Katherine Jackson, and elder brother of Michael and Janet, took a guided tour of Soweto, visiting Freedom Square and Mandela House, on Vilakazi Street, before having lunch at Sakhumzi restaurant.
The restaurateur and tour operators said Jackson - one of the Jackson 5 - was accompanied by his Afghan-born second wife, Halima Rashid.
The manager of Mandela House, Ishmael Mbhokodo, told The Timesit was a huge surprise to see the star, who sang at his brother's televised memorial service. He had no idea Jackson was coming to town.
"Mr Jackson didn't really say why he was visiting South Africa but he did mention that he was touring all the historical monuments of the township," Mbhokodo said.
"He told us he was coming from Freedom Square, in Kliptown, and was planning to go up the road to see the Hector Pieterson memorial.
"He arrived with an entourage of people, they posed for pictures with Nelson Mandela's family pictures, and he was impressed by the awards Mandela had received from the US."
After leaving the Mandela house, Jackson walked across the road to the Sakhumzi restaurant.
Sakhumzi's general manager, Benjamin Mamatela, said Jackson said he wasn't very hungry, but his wife tucked into the buffet of African cuisine.
"Mr Jackson said he just wanted a Coke, but his wife helped herself to the lunch of lamb stew, chicken, Greek salad and rice. He told us that she wanted something with no pork, so that was what she ate from the buffet."
Mamatela said it was amazing how much Jackson's speaking voice sounded like his late brother's.
The manager had pictures taken with the singer.
It is not known when Jackson arrived in the country and when he is scheduled to leave.
