Michael Jackson's children, Paris and Prince Michael to accept lifetime achievement Grammy for him
alg_michael_jackson.jpg

Michael Jackson might be gone but the awards keep trickling in.
The King of Pop's two eldest children will take the stage Saturday at the Special Merit Awards ceremony to accept a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for their father, according to CNN.
Prince Michael, 12, and Paris, 11, are scheduled to make their first public appearance since the memorial service 12 days after Jackson's death, according to CNN, which quoted unnamed Jackson family sources.
Jackson's youngest son, seven-year-old Blanket, is not expected to appear at the awards show.
A video of the presentation will then be shown during Sunday night's musical tribute to Jackson during the Grammy telecast, according to CNN.
However, not everyone in the Jackson family is happy with the planned presentation.
Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, will attend the ceremony, but Joe Jackson, Michael's father, will not be present due to anger that he was not consulted about having his grandchildren accept the award, according to the report.
Grammy producers and the Jackson estate's special administrators decided who would take part in the tribute, which doesn't sit well with all members of the performer's family, according to CNN.
Despite being left out of his son's will, Joe Jackson has requested a monthly allowance from his son's estate, claiming that he depends on his son's financial support to live.

Michael Jackson's Father Gets Hearing In Estate Case

Joseph Jackson, father of the late Michael Jackson, will finally get his day in court as he seeks a sizable allowance from his late son's estate. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff said Thursday (January 28th) that he would hold an evidentiary hearing on May 26th.
The Jackson patriarch is seeking more than $15,000 from the pop star's estate, and first challengeed the estate back in November. He says he has little income.
Michael's will stipulated no monies for his father, with whom he had a strained relationship. The will named as administrators lawyer John Branca and music executive John McClain, who have both
opposed the elder Jackson's claims.

House Michael Jackson Rented Sells To Fan For $3 Mil

(RTTNews) - A house in Las Vegas that Michael Jackson once rented has sold for $3.1 million. The purchaser of the home is reportedly a fan of the King of Pop, and wanted to buy the home due to MJ's association with the property.

"The estate became famous and generated tremendous interest because of the MJ connection; in fact, the buyer is a big Michael Jackson fan," realtor Zar Zanganeh said in a statement.

According to the e-mailed statement sent out earlier this week, the house was bought by a couple with property in both California and Asia. The Las Vegas property is more than 16,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms, a tennis court, basketball court, and 20-seat theater.

The statement also indicates that the mansion is the largest piece of real estate sold in Sin City in the last year. Jackson rented the mansion in 2006-2007 when he returned from an extended trip overseas.

Michael Jackson's Doctor Could Be Charged Next Week

Los Angeles DA reportedly considering charging Dr. Conrad Murray with involuntary manslaughter.

Criminal charges could finally be coming in the June 25 death of Michael Jackson. More than six months after the King of Pop's passing, his embattled live-in physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, could face manslaughter charges as early as next week, according to TMZ.

Citing multiple law enforcement sources, the site reported that Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley and members of his office have met to discuss charging Murray with involuntary manslaughter and that charges could be filed next week.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office could not be reached for comment at press time.
Earlier this year, TMZ reported that the Los Angeles Police Department had completed its investigation into Jackson's death and was preparing to send the case to the DA's office within weeks. According to the latest report, the LAPD still has not presented the case to the DA, but members of the DA's office have worked closely with police on the case and are familiar with its details. The deputy DA assigned to the case, David Walgren, has reportedly briefed Cooley on the case and is in possession of all the police department's notes on the matter.
Murray has told investigators that he administered the surgical anesthetic propofol, as well as other tranquilizers, to Jackson several times in the hours leading up to his death, and the coroner has ruled the singer died of lethal levels of the drug. Involuntary manslaughter charges would require prosecutors to show that Murray engaged in gross negligence in his actions but did not intend to cause harm or death to Jackson.

10 reasons to tune in to the 2010 Grammy Awards

arts-grammy-noms-getty-584.jpg

The 52nd annual Grammy Awards ceremony takes place this Sunday. While the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences bills the event as “Music’s Biggest Night,” the epic broadcast doesn’t always qualify as must-see TV.
Aside from the occasional curveball – like Radiohead’s brilliant revamp of 15 Step with the USC Marching Band last year – or major league scandal, the show typically boasts few surprises. We expect performances marred by spotty sound, trophies awarded to commercially successful favourites and teary speeches in which winners give thanks to their families, their agents and the higher power of their choice.
Nevertheless, the 2010 bash does promise some unexpected highlights. Here are 10 reasons to tune in this year.
1. Stephen Colbert is a presenter. The satirist scored a Best Comedy Album nomination for A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! He’s up against the fantastically packaged Spinal Tap comeback record, so we’re not banking on a win. But we are counting on Colbert to work in a few deadpan zingers between his TelePrompTer lines.
2. Tia Carrere. Did you know the Wayne’s World dream girl won a Grammy last year for Best Hawaiian Music Album? Neither did we! And she’s up for another one this year (her third nomination). We’re looking forward to seeing the Relic Hunter in action when she co-hosts the pre-telecast ceremony, which will be live-streamed on the official Grammy site beginning at 1p.m. PT.

3. Jokes at the expense of Kanye West. Although Kanye is up for six awards this year, he’s conspicuously absent from the list of performers, likely because he’s still persona non grata after his outburst during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the last MTV Video Music Awards. With West kinda-sorta out of the picture, we’re guessing that more than one participant will try to trot out that “Imma let you finish, but…” routine that flourished in the aftermath of the MTV VMAs. The joke may be stale, but it does provide a great opportunity for a Grammy-related drinking game.
grammy-green-day-getty-200.jpg
Rockers Green Day will make an appearance with cast members of the musical American Idiot. (Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
4. Green Day will team up with the cast of American Idiot. In September 2009, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre premiered a stage musical based on Green Day’s concept album American Idiot, which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2005. For this year’s Grammystravaganza, the grown-up punks plan to perform with cast members of the musical, which is heading to Broadway this spring. Our prediction? The stirring collaboration could be this year’s answer to the Radiohead/USC Marching Band awesomeness.
5. The Michael Jackson tribute. There was no way NARAS would let this year’s awards go by without including an high-impact homage to the late King of Pop, who will also be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the show. The question of which performers would be selected to participate in this was a little more open-ended. Somehow, organizers arrived at Carrie Underwood, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson and Celine Dion as the quintet to interpret Jackson’s Earth Song. Oh, and “the voice of Michael Jackson” will be woven into the mix. Sure to be bizarre andbombastic.
6. The Michael Jackson tribute is in 3-D. Right, so Celine and J-Hud and Smokey and Usher and Carrie (and Michael) will belt their hearts out while a never-before-seen Earth Song mini-movie – reportedly the centrepiece for Jackson’s This Is It tour – plays in the background. In 3-D! How will viewers experience this multi-dimensionality, you ask? U.S. retail chain Target has teamed up with CBS to provide “millions of free 3-D glasses.” Sadly, as Target has not yet arrived on Canadian soil, we North-of-49ers may have to use specs from the Avatar screenings at our local theatres.

7. Jamie Foxx + T-Pain + Doug E. Fresh + Slash. Yes, performing together. So many questions come to mind. Like: What in God’s name will it sound like? And is this Slash’s replacement for the on-hiatus Velvet Revolver? Regardless, we will be glued to our TV sets in anticipation of what could be a brilliant train wreck.
8. Yo! Taylor Swift might rap. Some dismiss the fresh-faced country ingénue as milquetoast, but Swift has proved she has more edge (and a better sense of humour) than her detractors assume. At last year’s CMT Awards, the teen troubadour teamed up with Autotune aficionado T-Pain for a hilarious hip-hop interpretation of Swift’s hit Love Story, dubbed – what else? – Thug Story. Let’s hope she does it again.

9. It may be our last chance to see Lil’ Wayne before he gets locked up. A few months back, Weezy pleaded guilty to charges of attempted criminal possession of a weapon (the incident happened back in July of ’07, when NYPD officers found a concealed weapon on Wayne's tour bus). He’s headed to prison on Feb. 9 and might serve up to a year. You’d be well advised to watch his performance at the Grammys (with Eminem, Canada's Drake and Blink-182’s Travis Barker), because it might be a while before the Young Money MC gets on a stage again.
10. Lady Gaga. Love her or hate her, pop music’s reigning over-the-top diva is sure to deliver a mesmerizing spectacle. And even if you’re driven to cover your ears, Gaga’s outfit should serve as a great jumping-off point for this year’s Halloween costume.
The 52nd annual Grammy Awards ceremony takes place Jan. 31 at 8 pm ET.

Oh shucks, Quincy Jones is reproducing “We are the World” – this time for Haiti

Current Font Size:

News fresh off the press is that Quincy Jones is planning to re-record the 1985 charity single ‘We Are the World’ to raise funds for victims of the Haiti earthquake.
I am all for helping Haiti victims, but if I hear “We are the World” again, I will puke. The world has enough talented musicians who can compose something fresh.
Lionel Richie, who co-wrote the original song with Michael Jackson and Jones, surely can write a magnificent new song .
Jones is said to be meeting a host of musicians in Los Angeles next week to re-interpret the 1985 track – and names being mentioned include John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, Natalie Cole, Usher, Miley Cyrus and believe-it-or-not Will Smith. Now, with all due respect, Smith is not a musician. Those cheesy rap songs of his with beats by his old friend Jazzy Jeff, have as much seriousness in them as soap bubble.
Quincy says: “It’s the 25th anniversary (of the 1985 song) and it’s perfect timing. It’s not an accident, man. That’s God. It will be ‘We Are the World’ for Haiti.”
The original single – released to raise money for famine in Africa – also included, among others, artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper and Billy Joel.
We need a new song and the world is full of great song writers – so Mr Jones, please make some phone calls.

When I think of the greatest songwriters, these names come to mind (dead and alive): Seal, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Neil Diamond, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Sir Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Valerie Simpson, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager, Carolyn Leigh, Charles Aznavour, Charles Strouse, Chuck Berry, Curtis Mayfield, Cynthia Weil, Dave Bartholomew, Boudleaux Bryant, Bob Crewe, Bob Gaudio’ Bob Hilliard, Brian Holland, Brian Wilson, Buddy Holly, Burt Bacharach, Barry Gibb, Barry Manilow, Barry Mann, Bernie Taupin, Billy Joel, Bob Merrill, Bobby Darin, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Barry White, Luther Vandross, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, Randy Newman, Richard Adler, Robin Gibb, Roy Orbison, Sheldon Harnick, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Lennon, J. Loren Wince, Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley, Billie Joe Armstrong.
The list is long and most of them are still alive, so Mr Jones take note, and don’t give us “We are the World” again.

Channel 4's Jackson family documentary 'was fabricated'
Channel 4 faces court costs exceeding £1 million if it loses a libel trial in which it is alleged that journalists made up parts of a story about members of Michael Jackson's family planning to move to Devon.

JACKSON_1567571c.jpg

The programme, called The Jacksons Are Coming, captured the lives of the family, including Michael's older brother Tito, as they spent five weeks in a rented house in Appledore, near Barnstaple.
But according to documents presented to the High Court, elements of the programme were fabricated.

Matt Fiddes, who featured in the documentary as the Jacksons' local guide, claims the programme wrongly stated he betrayed Tito Jackson and the family by leaking stories about them to the media during their stay in 2008.
Mr Fiddes, 30, a martial arts expert from Barnstaple and a former bodyguard to Michael Jackson, claims he and Tito Jackson contrived a publicity stunt pretending that the family were moving to Appledore.
He then helped broker a £20,000 deal for Studio Lambert, a production company, to cover the move.
Mr Fiddes said that Tito Jackson was in a "poor financial position" and actually wanted the money to secure a deposit on a London home from which to relaunch his career.
But he is suing Channel 4, Studio Lambert and narrator Jane Preston, claiming that the whole programme "was from start to finish a gross misrepresentation or distortion of the true facts as they occurred".
Court papers claim that litigation for proceedings including the trial, set to being in June, could "cost well in excess of £1 million".
A spokesman for Studio Lambert said: "Channel 4, Studio Lambert, and the producer Jane Preston completely refute these false allegations and are confident that they can demonstrate the honesty and truthfulness of this documentary."

My Ten Sense: Michael Jackson created Avatar-like movie before James Cameron, MJ’s film to be in 3-D at Grammys

michael-jackson-earth-song.jpg

Avatar director James Cameron said he has a new admiration for trees and he’s getting a lot of credit for the special effects that created the amazing fantasy world of Pandora in his record-setting blockbuster movie.
But long before Cameron brought us Avatar, Michael Jackson wrote “Earth Song” and performed in the accompanying video to urge us to stop destroying our environment.
Before he died in June, Michael had a mini-film created for “Earth Song” that was to be shown during his “This Is It” tour in London that never took place because of the pop star’s fatal doctor-induced prescription drug overdose.
Now, MJ’s “Earth Song” film will be shown at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday for the show’s first-ever 3-D performance.
Go to my blog site, www.mytensense.com, to find out where to get 3-D glasses for the Grammys' tribute to Michael Jackson, how Avatar and "Earth Song" are similar and to learn who is performing during the tribute to the King of Pop.

Michael Jackson-Lisa Marie Marriage Certificate Fetches $70,800
The original marriage certificate for Michael Jackson to the daughter of Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, sold for $70,800 at a multi-estate sale held by Philip Weiss Auctions.

The sale took place January 22 to 24 in Oceanside, New York. About 200 people were on hand when the certificate went to bid with over 1,000 registered Internet bidders.
The certificate is considered on of the most important celebrity documents of the 20th century. It was signed by both singers and by State Official Hugo F. Perez. It had been laminated to protect it from the Dominican humidity.
“This was a great way to start the new year,” Philip Weiss said in a press release for the auction house. “The story with this one was pretty much the same as last year’s sales. Great merchandise sparked spirited bidding, which resulted in strong prices. It’s all about the items. If you’re fortunate to attract quality, fresh-to-the-market consignments, you’ll do well every time.”
The couple were married on May 26, 1994 in the Dominican Republic. The marriage lasted two years.

MJ’S FORMER LAS VEGAS HOME FETCHES $3.1 MILLION

A 16,400-square-foot home where Michael Jackson resided for six months in late 2007 and early 2008 has sold for $3.1 million.

Jackson rented the home at 2785 S. Monte Cristo, which is southeast of the intersection of Buffalo Drive and Sahara Avenue.

The home was ultimately taken back by the lender, Eastern Savings Bank, in lieu of it going through foreclosure with the previous owner, said Carolyn Mullany, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Premier.

An offer was made on the property Friday and the sale was closed and recorded Tuesday, she said. A California couple, a doctor and a lawyer with property holdings in Asia, acquired the home by paying cash, she said. It must be mentioned that, yes, they are Michael Jackson fans!

The estate sits on one acre. It is gated and has 8-foot walls surrounding it.

The home features seven bedroom suites, three office suites, an elevator, large formal rooms for entertainment, a theater room and orchestra loft.

The master bedroom measures 2,000 square feet with a large covered patio, his and her closets, a 10-head shower and Jacuzzi tub, Mullany said. The master bedroom also has a secret exit to a rooftop deck

designed for sun bathing.

The fitness room features a dance floor and dry sauna.

It also has basketball and tennis courts.

Michael Jackson’s use of the home generated a lot of interest and calls about the property, Mullany said.

Carrie Underwood 'Honored' To Be In Grammys Michael Jackson Tribute

The country star will follow up Sunday's performance by singing the national anthem at Super Bowl XLIV.

Carrie Underwood, who was just announced as the national anthem singer for next week's Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, will have a chance to warm up on a very different nationally televised stage this Sunday. She's one of five performers paying tribute to Michael Jackson at the Grammy Awards. As she gears up to rehearse with Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion and Smokey Robinson, Underwood said she just hopes that the five of them can pay a fitting tribute to the late King of Pop.

bttn_play.gif

"The Grammys obviously wanted to pay tribute to Michael Jackson and his music, so they wanted to do something that he was passionate about," the "American Idol" alum said. "So, they asked all of us, I guess five of us, to be a part of it. ... I've met Usher. Obviously, I've met Jennifer Hudson. I think I've met all of them actually, but I don't think I've ever sang with any of them, so I'm really very excited to be even considered in that group of names."
The tribute will include never-before-released footage from Jackson's 3-D movie "Earth Song" that was intended to be seen on his This Is It tour last summer. CBS, which airs the Grammy Awards, has teamed up with Target to provide free 3-D glasses to those who want to view the footage in 3-D at home. They will be available until January 31 at Target stores. This is the first time an awards show has broadcast a segment in 3-D.
"Hopefully, [the tribute performers are] people that he respected and liked," Underwood said. "I'm just honored they asked me. Of course, we said yes before we knew the details. I'm there, and I think it will be a really cool moment on the show."
Are you excited to see the Michael Jackson tribute on Sunday? Do you plan to go out and get a pair of 3-D glasses to watch it? Let us know in the comments below, or upload a video to Your.MTV.com!

Celine Dion says she's feeling sad, angry about Michael Jackson's death

LOS ANGELES — Celine Dion says she's still sad and angry about the death of Michael Jackson.
The diva is set to take the stage along with Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Carrie Underwood and Smokey Robinson for a 3-D tribute to Jackson at the 52nd Grammy Awards on Sunday.
It will be the first look at the environmentally conscious "Earth Day" mini-movie Jackson created for his "This Is It" tour before his death last June.
After rehearsals on Saturday, Dion was asked how it felt to sing "Earth Day" while images of the King of Pop scrolled by on massive screens overhead.
"Very emotional," said Dion, clad in a grey embroidered T-shirt and jeans, with a white leather jacket and thigh-high grey suede boots.
"Very honoured and emotional at the same time. It's kind of an awkward feeling. Sadness, and mad at the same time that he was top shape.
"You see a lot through the newspapers and it's unfortunate sometimes that people have this (distorted) image, but Michael was on top of his gig and on top of his talent, and seeing the movie and seeing him, how top-shape he was, it's very difficult to accept."
Special glasses are available only in the United States at Target stores, so Canadian viewers might not get the full effect of the visuals, which feature a small girl dancing through a lush jungle and falling asleep to images of polar bears, elephants and zebras charging around onscreen.
The song, however, will still pack a punch. As Dion swayed and danced onstage alongside the others, the group harmonized with pre-recorded vocals from Jackson.
For Dion, Jackson was an "amazing source of inspiration." So much so, that she said he was part of the reason she decided to learn English.
"I wanted the same life - show business," she explained.
"I wanted to sing onstage like him. ... I wanted to be onstage someday with Michael Jackson, especially (to) sing onstage with him maybe one day."
Dion said she didn't want to meet the King of Pop and be unable to tell him how honoured she was because of a language barrier.
"It was because of him in a way that I went to school to learn English," she said.
The Grammy performance is difficult for her, the singer added.
"It is, because I'm not only a fan, but I knew him personally a little bit, I met with him, and it's difficult to know that he was doing perfectly well and that he's no longer with us," she said.
"It's just heartbreaking."
So she took one more opportunity to explain what made Jackson such a special performer.
"Michael was not only a great musician, he was a great dancer, he was a great visionary, he had every instrument inside of his body, he knew exactly what he wanted to hear, what he wanted to do, he was feeling everything," she said.
"I hear 'HOO,"' she says, imitating Jackson's signature high-pitched flourish. "I hear this, it's not even a song, but for me it means everything. ...
"He was very, very special. I'm a big fan of Michael Jackson, period. That's all I can say."

Michael Jackson Wonderland estate still on Las Vegas market but rental house sells to fan (photos)

function resetForm(formId){ var form = document.getElementById(formId); if(form) { form.reset(); }}Michael Jackson rented a 16,400-square-foot Las Vegas mansion in 2007/2008 for six months while looking for a place to call his permanent home. That estate, located at 2785 S. Monte Cristo, was later taken over by Eastern Savings Bank when the owners defaulted on the lender's loan.
Today, after being on the market for a mere four days, a California couple reportedly plunked down $3.1 million for the mansion.
According to Real Estate agent Zar Zanganeh in a statement regarding this 10 bedroom, 15,461-square foot house, “It’s serendipity that we sold the home that we had also rented to Michael Jackso

n. The estate became famous and generated tremendous interest because of the MJ connection; in fact, the buyer is a big Michael Jackson fan.”
That buyer's name has not been released as of this date, but what has been released is the fact that Michael Jackson had bigger plans for living in Las Vegas in the form of a house at 7000 Tomiyasu Lane.
On the block in October, 2009 for $16.5 million as noted in a Zillow.com listing, the Las Vegas Sun reported that real estate czar Zar Zanganeh claims Michael Jackson was ripe to buy the 10-acre, 15,000 square-foot Mediterranean/contemporary Las Vegas manse as soon as MJ returned from his London tour, 'This Is it'.
Zanganeh claims to have shown Michael and his three children the Sin City complex many times.
Zanganeh, a Realtor with Fine Vegas Estates, enthused, “He got so excited, the minute we drove through the gates here he got that feeling of Neverland. As soon as he stepped out of the car, he said, ‘Zar, I love this place. I’m calling it Wonderland.’” (FOR WONDERLAND PHOTOS CLICK HERE)
Built by casino king Gary Primm, the enormous edifice is kidnapper proofed (obviously, a big draw for Michael Jackson), custom-designed with three secure gates. Other safety precautions include secret tunnels, bulletproof doors, and a panic room.
As for the fun stuff at this so-called Wonderland: A tennis/basketball court, a 20-seat theater, a cave room den, an orchestra loft, a car showroom, a fitness room and, of course, a dance floor.

Jackson’s dad calls for medical records

LONDON - Michael Jackson’s father wants to investigate the death of his son and has filed papers in Los Angeles, demanding release of medical records.

Joe Jackson is convinced the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Centre documents will help him determine if anyone was to blame for the King of Pop’s death and how much he should sue them for.
Family members, including Joe, have accused the singer’s personal physician Conrad Murray of wrongful death of the star, but police have yet to charge the medic with any wrongdoing and he has maintained he’s innocent.
Joe Jackson’s lawyer filed papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court Friday in which he claimed: “The UCLA records will permit Joe to determine with medical experts and then present to this court, how much support he needs to pay for the prosecution of his wrongful death action against those responsible for his son’s death.”
Michael was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical centre.

New Pic: Stars Go 3-D For Michael Jackson Tribute

Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, and Carrie Underwood go 3-D for a Michael Jackson tribute rehearsal.
The late King of Pop will be honored at Sunday night's Grammy Awards with a 3-D tribute, featuring, "Earth Song," which Michael had planned as one of the highlights of the highly anticipated tour he was rehearsing for at the time of his death.

In planning this tribute, producer Ken Ehrlich, who met with Michael one day prior to the singer's passing, has consciously kept Michael's wishes in mind. He told ET's Kevin Frazier, "The people that we picked to perform this 3D version of 'Earth Song' are the people that I really feel Michael would have wanted to be there -- Celine Dion, who was always one of Michael's favorites. Carrie Underwood, who we talked about the night that I met with him. Usher, who we know he loved. Smokey [Robinson], his [mentor]. And Jennifer Hudson, who performed at the memorial service that we did, but was also someone that Michael really admired a lot."
The tribute to The King of Pop will be broadcast Sunday, Jan. 31 live from Staples Center in Los Angeles on CBS.

Michael Jackson News for Jan 31,2010:

Jackson honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award

HOLLYWOOD — Another jewel has been added to the King of Pop’s crown.
Michael Jackson was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at a special Grammy ceremony held Saturday afternoon.
“What more is there to be said?” asked National Recording Academy of Arts and Sciences president Neil Portnow. “The world wept at his sudden and untimely passing last year — because we know that a talent so remarkable will not likely grace our presence again for a lifetime.”
Fair enough. But Jacko’s longtime manager Frank DiLeo — who accepted the award on behalf of the late star and his three children — was more interested in remembering Michael the man than Michael the star.
“He was a good friend and a funny guy,” said an emotional DiLeo. “He had a sense of humour like none of you really know.
“I remember the times he would call me up and say, ‘Are you watching the Grammys? Do you believe what that person just said?’ ... Then he would laugh like hell and then just hang up.”
Earlier, producer Jimmy Jam told reporters on the red carpet that his music career began shortly after he discovered the Jackson 5’s first LP.
“I saw on the back of the album that Michael Jackson was 10,” he said. “I was 10 years old too. That totally changed my viewpoint of music. I didn’t have to wait. I could start making music now. And I did.”
Jackson’s posthumous honour was one of several awards handed out at the affair, a noticeably intimate and low-key affair in contrast to the arena-sized Grammy ceremony held at Staples Center.
“We all love the Grammys, and we love the glitz and the glamour,” said Portnow, “but these awards are the heart and soul of the Academy and what we do.”

Honoring Michael Jackson in 3-D with Grammy Producer Ken Ehrlich

Although the world is still getting over the sudden death of Michael Jackson, the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards is paying tribute to the King of Pop in creative 3-D Grammy manner on Sunday, January 31 at 8pm with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be received by the children of Michael Jackson.
With the help of Celine Dion, Usher, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson, the 3-D Grammy tribute to Michael Jackson for the Lifetime Achievement Award will feature the environmentally compassionate and animal friendly "Earth Song", the third single from the Michael Jackson album, HIStory. In the special video for "Earth Song", which centers on the childlike wonder of Jackson and his love for animals, a young girl in a beautiful forest goes to sleep and wakes up in a land where the beauty has been ravaged and needlessly gone. Throughout his career, Michael Jackson was a fourteen-time Grammy winner, a three time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, and now receives recognition for an amazing lifetime of many, many record breaking achievements.

Ahead of the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, we caught up with Grammy Executive Producer, Ken Ehrlich, to learn more about the secrets behind the Michael Jackson tribute in 3-D, whether viewers at home will notice a difference, whether Michael Jackson was on tap to perform at this year's Grammy ceremony, and what planned project Ken Ehrlich had on the go with Jackson for the future.
THE DEADBOLT: You've mentioned that [the Michael Jackson Tribute] will be in 3-D for "Earth Song" and there are other effects of a plane and ghosts and so on.
KEN EHRLICH: Yeah, there are, but we've limited ourselves to this. There were a number of 3-D effects that were created for the tour. This is the one that we chose to do.
THE DEADBOLT: For people that don't have 3-D glasses, will the show look any different?
EHRLICH: Not really. If you can imagine - and it gets a little technical here - when you watch a music performance on television, or any show for that matter, a film show, when you're in medium shots and close-ups, because of the depth of field, what's behind it goes to soft focus anyway. All we're doing is, if anything, it's probably emphasizing that a little more because, by definition, 3-D depends upon a double image so that the glasses separate the red and green.
michael_jackson_3d_3.jpg
So if you're at home and you're watching this without [glasses] on wide shots, you won't really see it because basically the image is far enough away that you can't really see the separation. When we're on close-ups, basically on close-ups of people singing, it would be soft focus anyway. There are a couple of sequences in this where we're going to full imagery and in those sequences the image will probably be a little soft for people watching at home without the glasses.
THE DEADBOLT: Are there any plans to incorporate this technology into future broadcasts of the Grammys?
EHRLICH: I would love to think that at some point we become the first awards show to broadcast the show in 3-D, but that depends on how many millions and millions of 3-D sets. We know CBS this year was all about 3-D, but we're probably five years or more away from where there are enough sets. Or maybe we do it on two tiers. We would love to.
THE DEADBOLT: You met with Michael the day before his death and I wanted to know if it was to discuss his performance at the Grammys? Was he onboard to perform this year?
michael_jackson_3d_5.jpg
EHRLICH:
Well, it wasn't about that but he certainly was. I mean, what he had told me last January, and actually in December of last year when we talked about it, "Not this year, Ken. But next year we'll do it." But the meeting was actually another project.
THE DEADBOLT: Can you talk about what that was?
EHRLICH: Yeah. We had been talking about doing a Halloween special and he loved the idea of it and actually wanted to do it. That meeting, I had basically brought him some creative that we had been talking about. He loved it and basically signed off on it and said, "Let's do it."
