Janet Jackson has been one of music's leading voices since the '80s, and now the pop legend will be honored with an appropriately prestigious award at this year's Billboard Music Awards. Dick Clark Productions and NBC announced Monday (May 7) that Jackson will be receiving the coveted Icon Award, which recognizes singers' contributions.

Along with receiving the honor, Jackson is also scheduled to deliver a highly-anticipated performance, which will be her first on television in nine years. She joins the club of Icon recipients along with Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Cher.
Kelly Clarkson will be hosting the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, which will broadcast live from MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday, May 20 at 8 p.m. ET /5 p.m. PT.


 
she deserves it... I would very much like to see her revive her career in a big way! I hate when either her or Mikes music gets overshadowed by what is now mainstream..

Unbreakable has really revived her career honestly. It was her biggest album since All For You,No Sleeep was her longest running #1 since That's The Way Love Goes and despite her cancelling the tour that coincided with it,she's more than made up for it since leaving Wissam. I feel like he was seriously holding her back creatively and artistically. She has definitely flourished since announcing State Of The World last year.

any thoughts on her performance? Im curious to know what others thought.
 
I saw her performance honestly she looked a shell of her former self. When she was actually singing it was not good. I thought if anything she would be still able to dance well guess what she can’t. I have seen her in concert twice and she was great but I have to say her time has come and gone. I hate to say washed up but she looked very much washed up. It’s too bad I watched the show just see her perform. Time to be a mom Janet.
 
I was suffering through the Awards just to see Janet and Bruno-started flipping over to watch PBS's "Little Women" and missed the whole thing. Some kind soul recorded it on their phone while it was on and posted it on YouTube. So I saw it that way.

I wasn't ever a Janet FAN, so I wasn't really paying attention to her in her 'hey day', but I thought she was great. There was a lot of stomping and hair whipping, but it was still better than Beyonce's Coachella performance IMO. Or as good as. It was wonderful to see Katherine, Rebbie and Austin in the audience (didn't see Prince) and Bruno's speech about her (had no idea she had broken that many records or had that many awards) and his kneeling in front of her was fantastic. I'm glad he was the one to give it to her.

Also, Tyra Banks mouthing along the words and hand motions in the audience was priceless.
 
To bad the royal wedding upstaged Janet’s moment though. That’s practically the only thing people are talking about today.

Very lackluster performance. I was surprised that it was as boring as it was. Seriously, I was almost embarrassed for her. It was one of her weakest performances ever.

Just wanted to say that Janet&#8217;s performance wasn&#8217;t even in the same league as Beyonce&#8217;s Coachella performance. In fact it wasn&#8217;t even the same league as anything Beyoncé has done. Even if you hate Beyone, there was no way that Janet&#8217;s BMA performance was better than Beyonce&#8217;s. IMO, even JLO&#8217;s performance was better. i truly think that this was one of Janet&#8217;s worst performances ever. She depends a lot on her dancers and last night they completely over shadowed her. She was lost in her sea of dancers. Honestly, Janet is a shadow of herself and it showed on the BMA&#8217;s.
 
I think her looks are good. She really does not look like 52 and she seems able to held her weigtht so far.
But I really do find the performance boring. Nothing that you have to watch serveral times, she had a lack of stage presence and the many dancers did not make it any better.
 
I guess since I asked peoples opinion, Ill put mine..

It was nice to see her on stage, the set/music choices/dancers/staging was all great.. but in all honesty she just looked like she was going through the motions and aside from the fact she still has a strong stage presence.. The actual dancing, well the dancers out staged her.. And if I am being super super honest, its just sad to see what her face lift did to her.. It's uncomfortable to see! I am not trying to be disrespectful, I am just telling you what I thought when I saw her.. Her continuously trying to 'hide' the facelift look by pulling her hair back like it's pulling her face back.. No, we know it's the surgery.

I still love her though
 
What was Janet thinking? She didn’t need no plastic surgery whatsoever. What is with these Jackson’s and plastic surgery? None of them needed it. They all seem to have had self esteem issues. I still can’t believe Michael actually said he hated his smile. My gosh he has a beautiful smile that lights up a room everytime.
 
Indeed, it's kind of sad to see she had a face lift, but it's not only a Jackson family "issue", I mean there are a lot of Hollywood stars that get plastic surgery... And many of them, if not all of them, don't need it, it's usually some esthetic concerns and self-esteem issues that lead them to have plastic surgery... And it's too bad really... There's a huge pressure in this domain (show business in general) and it's too much to put on a human being. Always judged and stalked... They are not allowed to grow/look old. It must be terrible to have to deal with such pressure on a daily basis!
 
I think the performance was ok and I am glad to hear that Prince was there to support her as well. I agree non of the Jacksons needed plastic surgery. Rebbie looked naturally young for a really long time.
 
I don`t think he was there to support Janet. For a year he stated he has no contact with her and he was not sitting with Rebbie and Co, on the Family-seats who were there for Janet.
Maybe he spoke there with her but I would not bet on it.

Prince was invited from others and this seems the reason he was there.

princejacksonWow...just...wow. I am truly at a loss for words. Thank you @dcp and @bbmas for allowing me to see how much work actually goes in behind the scenes on these large scale productions. Not only did I learn so much from the crew and production team but it also reinvigorated my inspiration for production and reminded me of why I love production and films so much

On Sunday night, American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress Janet Jackson was honored with the Iconic Award at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

However, what stood at during the event in that saw her staging a televised performance in nine years, was her dressing, more specifically the accessories which had a Kenyan touch.

Janet stepped on stage in a sparkling gold sweatshirt dress and matching shiny gold thigh high boots accessorized with a colourful chunk of five beaded Maasai necklaces and bungles.

Before she accepted the award Janet brought down the house with an epic performance.
