Janet Jackson Contract Demand: No Michael Jokes - The Hollywood Reporter
janet-jackson-portrait-2011-a-p.jpg

The riders for the singer’s current world tour forbid any comedian she shares the bill with from making reference to her or anyone in her family.

Janet Jackson doesn't want to hear jokes about her brother Michael, and if she hears them when she's about to perform there will be serious trouble. The singer, who is in the middle of her Number Ones, Up Close and Personal world tour, has a provision in her contract that forbids comedians she may be sharing the bill with to make jokes about anyone in the Jackson family

The Smoking Gun has posted Jackson's tour contract, which among the usual set of demands for a star of her stature, admonishes the purchaser to ensure "that comedian will not make any reference to Janet Jackson or the Jackson family."

How much is Jackson making per show? The contract states that her minimum guarantee is $475,000 for a show. She's also entitled to 85 percent of the gross box office receipts over $650,000.

The promoters will also reimburse her $25,000 for the use of her own lighting and sound equipment during the show.

While none of Jackson's backstage demands are as demanding as Van Halen's legendary "no brown M&Ms" rider, some of the specifics are a little surprising. Such as Jackson's preferred brand of beer (two cases of Miller High Life Not Light), or her preferred scent (Votivo Red Currant scent candles).

Good for her. It is about time that someone in the family take a stand to limit the Michael bashing and disrespecting!!!! Next, I want her to inform the hosts on shows she is on that they cannot engage in any disrespecting comments about her brother too. I am proud of her here. I hope other family members are aware of this, like Latoya and those who send the kids to interviews.

Janet could've done this years ago. Don't forget she went on the shows of people that trashed her brother like Jay Leno and Oprah. As a matter of fact she was kissing on and giggling with Jay Leno before and after MJ's death. For Janet, this is too little too late in my opinion.

^ So just because she went on the show of someone who - in the past - had unsavoury things to say about her brother, means she's automatically a bad person? Even if in HER interview with Jay Leno, he didn't say anything bad about her brother? It's not really wise as a performer that relies on publicity to boycott EVERY show that's said something negative about Michael. I feel that's just fans grasping for straws.

I believe she was well aware of the horrible things Jay said.. Besides Jay testified at MJ's trial and sat up there and basically tried to downplay what he had said previously about the Arvizo's. Janet knew what Jay thought about MJ yet she still went on his show laughing and giggling with him and taking pics with him smiling. I find that to be horrendous from her.

Better late than never.

But this contract is for her touring, not for media appearances....

It ain't like no other fanbase would say the same thing and it's not like you haven't seen this same thing said by non fans and even haters.

Jay and others wouldn't say anything bad about Michael to her face. Behind her back or when she isn't there they would. All the shows are the same anyways. The damage was done a long time ago. It's like one big game being a celebrity and the shows etc. People need to promote things and will put things aside to do it. I don't agree with that but that's how it goes.

I am confused does she have a comedian on her shows? I think it's sad that you have to have a clause no jokes about Michael. I don't think they should or should be doing it anyways. It's disrespectful.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't the insults aimed at Michael start like about 20 years ago???

Exactly! that is what I am saying. It is too little too late.. she should've been defending her brother 20 years ago instead of smiling, laughing and giggling all the time:ermm:

Well, I guess MJ's death taught her a painful lesson of defending and standing up for her family, but at least she is better than the rest of her family.

I can't believe some people in here. So because Janet didn't have this in her contracts in the past she shouldn't have it now? She should just let comedians make jokes about Michael? Would that make you happy?

Its about time. Janet had enough clout to command this years ago. I'll give her some credit but not a whole lot. She added to it somewhat by the negative things she said about him herself.

Bit late. all those years going on shows like jay leno. shes done more damage in the last two years than any joke

exactly it's called showbuisness, that's why Michael said you have to rhinoskin , and in the business of late night in general if you are a celebrity or politician and esepically if you experience some kind of controversy you are going to be a target of comedians and late nigth paradies, but celebritues go there because well people watch it, it gets viewers and it's a way to promote , people
so yeah Jay Leno / Lettermena and etc might be dogging say like Britey Spears , Liseyy lohan one minuet and the next minuet they will be promoting something on ther show and sometimes its' to show the public that you do have a sense of humor and
don't take yourself seriously , but if people don't like celebrity bashing in general don't support late shows.
but like I said people do so it gets ratngs which is why alot of celebs hit the morning ciruits and late shows,
and nobody is not going to hire you if you don't promote your work, a stuido isn't going to hire you if you aren't going to promote they are going to hire the actress that is going to promote the film ( and yes even for Brad Pitt and Angelina Joeil you still have to promote your film) so clouth doesn't have anything to do wiht it.
and if your music like the Janet recently said the differenc is now the lable expect you to do more of the promoting yourself than in the past. they will eventually drop you if they feel you aren't holding up your part.
