Janet #1's

I never understand the big record sales fetish that some people have. It doesn't mean anything.

Actually it means a lot lol, if your not selling records...that say's something lol. And that goes for every artist but especially ones that are supposed to be "big time" and are considered "mainstream".

She should sell similar to Madonna's celebration....about 85K first week. But the interview might help a lot...Top 105K.

If your company sells a product and nobody buys it, your company is out of business.

The same thing applies for artists. If their records don't sell, their livlihood is affected.

They don't have to sell multi million albums all the time, but if they don't sell enough, they could be dropped by their label and perceived as poison to any other label.

Just look at the Jackson 5. They did albums after Michael went solo, but lack of significant album sales brought their careers virtually to a halt.

I don't know about you guys, but since MJs death I realized how much I loved her music especially since the VMA's. I'm deffinatly gonna buy it maybe not staight away but I will. I love make me its infectious !! I wish her all the best with it.

Jazz, classical, zydeco, polka, spoken word, blues and other types of music rarely sell many albums and get little or no radio and video channel play. Yet these acts have a loyal audience that are not fickle like the mainstream pop audience. As far as the record companies are concerned, they release some albums to fail on purpose for tax purposes and/or to keep their acts in debt. That's one of the reasons acts like Prince and Ani Difranco releases their records themselves so that they don't need to sell 10 million to make a profit.

What was the release date again?
I'll definitely buy it, the tracklist is awesome.

edit: oh, it's Nov 17. Hmm maybe the first item in my Christmas present list!

Cool, but JANET JACKSON is not Prince or Ani Difranco, nor is she a Jazz, classical, zydeco, polka, spoken word, or blues artist. She is a pop/r&b star who made her name by being able to connetc to a MAINSTREAM audience. So she most deffinitly needs to sell records (and shows) to be considered/stay relevent. So back to the question...

I for one agree with memefan and think she'll do madonna greatest hits type of numbers.

I agree, but their lifetsyle isn't on a scale that the Janet Jacksons are on either. For a Janet Jackson, albums sales are important. She's not going to play in a small venue like your examples do and if your above examples make $50,000 a year they would be having an exceptional year.

ETA: She can make it album free like a Celine Dion in Vegas, but Janet doesn't seem to be at that place in her career yet where she wants to. So for her, album sales are important.
