Hailing from Gary, the Jackson family has put its mammoth stamp on pop music.
Three original members of the Jackson 5 — Marlon, Tito and Jackie — are carrying on the legacy with a Friday concert at Four Winds Casino Resort in New Buffalo, Mich.
"We have a great time; we have fun on stage. That's the whole key, just having fun," Marlon Jackson said in a phone interview. "It's an energetic show. It's a Jackson show, simple as that."
Beginning in late 1969 and running through the fall of 1970, the Jackson 5 notched four consecutive No. 1 singles on the Billboard pop chart.
<aside class="trb_ar_sponsoredmod" data-adloader-networktype="yieldmo" data-role="delayload_item" data-screen-size="mobile" data-withinviewport-options="bottomOffset=100&topOffset=1000000" data-load-method="trb.vendor.yieldmo.init" data-load-type="method" style="margin: 5px 0px 25px; clear: both;">"I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There" propelled the brothers from 2300 Jackson St. into a realm of fame that helped cement their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.</aside>"Those songs go over really great because that's what the people remember," Marlon Jackson said.
Now 59, Marlon Jackson is doing a different kind of touring, as he revisits material, that in many ways, holds a sentimental value.
"They're songs that I recorded when I was a kid," he said. "You know, we keep it in the family. So it feels great. I've been doing music all my life."
He noted, though, that there is a different feel to touring these days because of the absence of brother Michael Jackson, who died in 2009.
"But he's there in spirit," he assured.
Known as the "King of Pop," Michael Jackson was the lead singer of the Jackson 5, and continued in that role when the band changed its name to the Jacksons in 1976.
The first hit single in the United States under that new moniker was the ebullient "Enjoy Yourself" — a Top 10 tune.
Michael Jackson would go on to supply lead vocals on several other Jackson singles before breaking out on his own with "Off the Wall," his solo 1979 album.
His shocking death at age 50 is still deeply felt, older brother Marlon Jackson said.
"You never get over it, but you learn to deal with it, and I'm sure that's true with everyone who's lost a loved one " the singer said. "You learn to deal with it, you know, on a day-to-day basis, but it's gotten a lot better as time goes on, but you will always miss him."
The Los Angeles County coroner's office found that Michael Jackson died from acute propofol intoxication, with sedatives a contributing factor. The popular entertainer had been using propofol, a surgical anesthetic, as a sleep aid, according to reports.
Marlon Jackson said he doesn't dwell on whether his brother's death was preventable.
"I don't allow myself to get into those things because I don't know enough about all that," he said. "When Judgment Day comes, it's not me that's going to be judging, it's going to be the Lord that judges, so I'll leave that up to him to make that decision."
Marlon Jackson said, "I know that (Michael's) in a peaceful place. He's up there in heaven with other great people."
Although Michael Jackson was not yet 12 when he and his family left Gary for California, an entertainment official for the Steel City said he left a mark on his hometown.
"The Jackson family has left an indelible impression on the entertainment world, and in the process, put Gary, Indiana, on the map for more than crime, poverty and abandonment," said Ben Clement, executive director of the Gary Office of Film and Television.
"The Jacksons continue to be living examples of the American dream, and proof positive that hard work, perseverance and proper guidance can trump obstacles and produce a modicum of success, and in rare cases fame and fortune.
"The Jackson family is by no means perfect, but their rise from a tiny, two-bedroom ranch on the mean streets of Gary to the pinnacle of stage and screen will forever inspire legions of fans worldwide."
Aside from the Jackson brothers performing as a unit, and Michael Jackson shining on his own, the Jackson clan also spawned the stellar solo career of Janet Jackson, and a solid solo outing by Jermaine Jackson.
Meanwhile, the trio of Jackson brothers will unleash a 9 p.m. EDT show on Friday that brims with choreographic punch, and complementary music, such as "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)."
Additionally, promotional material from Four Winds Casino states that the Motown recording legends are celebrating the Jackson 5's 50th anniversary with a production that includes "video footage and retrospectives of Michael and his worldwide appeal as the greatest entertainer of all time."
Occasionally joined by Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Jackie are now doing "just some dates here and there," Marlon Jackson said.
As for how long it will last, he added, "It's not going to be too much longer for me."
The Georgia resident explained: "As I get older, there are other things you want to do. I'm not saying that I can't still get down, I'm just saying I'm not as young as I used to be."
