A jewelled white glove Michael Jackson threw to an Australian fan in 1996 has been sold at an auction in Melbourne for US$49,000 (£29,900).

The late singer tossed the glove into a crowd after a film premiere while he was visiting the country as part of his HIStory world tour in 1996.

It was caught by music collector Bill Hibble, who has since died. His mother put the glove up for auction.

The glove was bought by the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Auction house Bonhams and Goodman said the item - which was worn by Jackson on the day he married Debbie Rowe, the mother of his two elder children - fetched nearly twice the US$25,500 (£15,500) expected.

"There was a huge amount of interest in the week leading up to the sale. We were still pretty surprised by the price," Charlotte Stanes of the auction house told Reuters.

The crystal-encrusted white glove will eventually go on display in Las Vegas

She added it was the first Jackson glove to go on sale since he died on 25 June.

The white glove Jackson wore when he first performed the Moonwalk on the Motown 25 TV special in 1983 is also set to go under the hammer at a New York auction later this year.

It is being sold by Commodores member Walter Orange, who was given the glove as a gift from Jackson and is expected to fetch up to $60,000 (£36,600).

Jackson was buried last week in California, two months after he died of a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs aged 50.

His death has been ruled a homicide by the Los Angeles coroner. The verdict increases the chances of criminal charges being brought, although no-one has been named an official suspect.

Re: Jackson glove sells for $49,000

I would never sell a glove that had been MJ's.

I wouldnt sell an MJ glove, however if I had the money I sure would buy one..lol. Everything Michael touched turned to gold...

i remember when i bought the RWY top for $5600,and his black glove went for around £7000 prices are crazy even more with hard rock bumping up the prices, sure the dick clark glove went for higher price might be wrong.

I wouldn't sell it for any price,
I do think also that it should sell for a higher price that it too low

I would never sell MJ's glove
not even for milion dollars,I would never sell it

motown glove to fetch 60,000??? its worth more than that.. i'd be surprised if it was less than 100,000. if i had the money i'd pay more than that.

that is HISTORY- can't believe he is selling it. just a shame.

yea.... all of these things needs to be in a Michael Jackson museum. so fans can go and enjoy them. the children should have possession of them. esp. if michael gave you the GLOVE from MOTOWN 25 performance and you are going to sell it?

give it to back to the kids.

Well, Im sure it was a hard decision to make for Commadore Walter orange. But at least he decided to share it with the world.

I mean, Remember what Michael said in Moonwalker bout a ring that was given to him by... i dont remember, either Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire... that got stolen? Michael thought sure it got stolen, but the gesture was still there. So Michael's gesture to Walter is still there which no one can ever buy.

I mean iono...its a lot of money. But I would have thought it would be worth more. I'm sure they'll be worth millions as time goes on. Would I sell them? I mean if I had one to spare I would lol. But I guess I really wouldn't...especially if it was given to me or if I caught it in a crowd or something.
