SARATOGA SPRINGS — Michele Riggi has kept details of the annual National Museum of Dance gala under wraps. It is almost as mysterious as its honoree, the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

This week, Riggi, who is chairing the event, leaked a few “surprises” for the Aug. 14 gala and the induction ceremony at the museum Aug. 15.

She confirmed that Marlon Jackson, one of Michael’s brothers, will attend to accept the honor on behalf of the late pop star. Brother Tito is a maybe.

An A-list of guests and performers promise an elegant event, though most details have been kept secret for the museum’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Even the décor is a mystery. “I want it to be a surprise,” Riggi said.

Among the celebrity guests saluting Jackson’s amazing career are The Lombard twins from Buenos Aries, longtime friends of the King of Pop, will dance to some of Michael’s hit songs; and Ricardo Sopin and Iraida Volodina from “Dancing with the Stars” will perform a montage of his songs. Thirty-two local kids will dance a “Billie Jean” tribute, Riggi said.

John James, who played Jeff Colby on the popular TV series “Dynasty,” will be master of ceremonies, and Riggi’s son, Christopher, who is in the vamp movie spoof, “Vampire Sucks,” will charm “Twilight” fans. Best-selling author Laura Morton, who wrote the Elizabeth Smart story, is on the A-list of distinguished guests.

There are still about 30 tickets available for this “most exciting gala of the summer,” according to Riggi. Tickets are $300 per person. Ticketholders will also be entitled to attend the induction ceremonies at 5 p.m. Aug. 15. Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, longtime dance museum benefactors, are honorary co-chairs.

This year’s fundraiser will not feature an auction. “In lieu of gifts, we are asking for monetary donations to keep the museum doors open and to continue work on its beautiful exhibits,” Riggi said.

The huge dance floor will invite guests to get up and get down with the T.S. Ensemble playing Jackson dance favorites.

Michael Panza is handling decorations and the Glen Sanders Mansion has planned a sumptuous dinner.

“This gala is a big party,” Riggi said. “Everyone is welcome.”

That's nice, is this the event that will have those stupid protesters?

I think the one you are talking about was for him being inducted into the dance hall of fame.

This is part of it.

Yes, it is.

anyway, its a pity that more members of Michaels family will not attend, Id say its a shame.
Its the National museum of dance..., come on...

Marlon, Tito?

it's very hard for the brothers cause they're so close to each other & know there hearts are broken :(

Doggone it! I wish I could go :(

Still, I'm THRILLED to know that he's being inducted :D

I am confused why Marlon is attending this function. Marlon has been MIA when it comes to Mike..

Actually Marlon has done several interviews and appearances alone and with I believe it was Jackie to accept a posthumous award for Michael. Just recently on this forum there was discussion about how Marlon and Jackie are going through unreleased music (MJ's) and working with the powers that be towards future releases. Since Marlon lives in Atlanta and has his fingers in other non-MJ related projects, I don't find it unusual that we don't see Marlon here, there, and everywhere like a few other brothers who shall remain nameless. For years, Marlon has pretty much stayed out of the limelight, working on his own projects not related to the music industry.

Someone has to accept it for michael, Marlon is still his brother now what did he do? Damned if you do, damned if you don't....

"Thriller" of a Weekend at National Museum of Dance

The National Museum of Dance at 99 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs will salute the memory of Michael Jackson and his contributions to dance during Saturday's Gala and Sunday's Hall of Fame installation.
Marlon Jackson, Michael's brother and an original 'Jackson 5' member, will be in attendance at the Gala and to accept the honor of Michael Jackson's Hall of Fame induction on behalf of his late brother at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The entire event weekend will have entertainment with a Michael Jackson theme. At the Gala some highlights will include the 'King of Pop's' music by the TS Ensemble, dance performances by Arthur Murray instructors (and recent "Dancing with the Stars" entertainers) Iraida Volodina and Ricardo Sopin, young local performers strutting to a rendition of "Billie Jean" and a host of related activities to celebrate Michael Jackson's multi-media accomplishments.

Following the weekend, a permanent tribute exhibit to Michael Jackson is being planned. At both the Gala and Induction Ceremony, donations will be accepted for this and other Museum operating expenses.

The tickets for Saturday's Gala are priced at $300, and include admission to the Sunday Hall of Fame Induction. Reached by phone, Gala Chairperson Michele Riggi reported that there were less than a dozen tickets available. If you want to try to grab one of the last ones, please call (518) 583-4935. Tickets for the Hall of Fame Induction alone are $50, and can be reserved at the Museum by calling (518) 584-2225 x3001.

‘This Is It’: Jackson inducted into National Dance Hall of Fame
Published: Monday, August 16, 2010

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Local fans joined the Spa City’s social elite Sunday night at the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame to pay tribute to the hall’s newest inductee, the “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson.

Local dancers Iraida Volodina and Ricardo Sopin, (“Dancing with the Stars,”) and twin Argentinean duo Martin and Facundo Lombard, (Disney’s Step Up 3D), performed tribute routines before a trophy was presented to Marlon Jackson.

“The people are so great here,” said Jackson, who was in Saratoga Springs for the first time to accept the award on his younger brother’s behalf.

“He would’ve appreciated this,” Jackson said of his brother, saying he was the type of person who never took praise of his talent or his many accolades and accomplishments for granted.

In his acceptance remarks, Jackson told attendees about how he and Michael would visit children’s hospitals at the height of their fame to entertain ill children, and how they had given back to the fans that supported them throughout the years.

“We didn’t have his style of dance in the hall of fame,” said Michele Riggi, president of the museum’s board of directors, calling Jackson’s talent “incredible.”

Riggi welled up with tears while reading a letter addressed to her from Katherine Jackson, Marlon’s and Michael’s mother, thanking the museum for the honor and recognition of her son’s achievements

Museum founder Marylou Whitney and her husband, John Hendrickson, were in attendance, along with museum board member and Arthur Murray dance studio owner Leslie Valencia and U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Schenectady.

A panel featuring images and a quote from the “King of Pop” was also unveiled.

Jackson will join the likes of Fred Astaire, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Alvin Ailey in the hall.

An exhibit displaying props from his “This Is It” show, which he was rehearsing for when he died, and screens showing classic Jackson videos and the film of the same name, will run at the museum for a year following the induction.
