This is what people do in my country too, which is Romania. It is rooted deep in our culture for centuries. It's a custom which people do whenever they have to welcome somebody important. And in order to show that he/she feels welcome there, that person should take a piece of bread and "dip" it into salt.

U may think it's kind of strange i guess
