The parents of an Indian infant girl born with two faces say that she is eating and breathing normally despite having two pairs of eyes and lips and two noses.

The baby, who is yet to be named, was born to factory worker Vinod Kumar and his wife Sushma three weeks ago in northern India and has been drawing a stream of curious observers and others who consider her a deity in this deeply religious Hindu-majority country.

"I had never seen something like this in my life so naturally I was a little scared when I first saw her," her father said at the weekend at the family's mud-and-brick house in Noida town, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) northeast of New Delhi.

The girl has found easy acceptance in Kumar's large, extended family, who say they have no plans to consult doctors to check if the girl can receive treatment or corrective surgery.

"The doctor said everything is normal when she was born. So where's the need to get medical help?" said the child's father.

"She's fed through one mouth and sucks her thumb with the other. We use whichever mouth is free to feed her," the 24-year-old Kumar told AFP, adding she is eating and breathing normally.

Doctors said it was an extremely rare case, with the girl having two skulls joined together, and that separating them was out of the question.

"Since the heads are fused, separating them is not possible," paediatrician D.K Gupta of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences told the Hindustan Times newspaper on the weekend.

But doctors said the girl should be examined thoroughly to study the possibility of complications.

"Clearly the child is in no immediate danger but it has to be checked whether the oral and nasal cavity and other passages" are functioning properly, paediatrician Gupta said.

The case comes just months after Indian doctors performed a rare, marathon surgery to remove the extra limbs of a girl born with four arms and legs.

Two-year-old Lakshmi Tatma's case captivated the nation last year as domestic and international media focused on her complicated surgery performed in southern Bangalore city in November.

This year, Lakshmi started taking her first steps with the help of a baby walker, delighting her parents and doctors.

Lakshmi, named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth, was born fused to the pelvis of a twin that had stopped developing in her mother's womb -- a condition that occurs once in 50,000 conjoined twin births.

Kumar said he had heard about Lakshmi, but did not want to change anything about his daughter's features.

"Whatever God has given me is acceptable. What can we do about it?" he said, lifting the baby to take her away after allowing a brief glimpse of her as neighbours crowded around her cot.

"This child is very special to us," the baby's grandfather chimed in, gazing lovingly at the infant.

Awww what a sweetie she is! I think children who were born like that have all kinds of special gifts.
And hes such a good dad already you can tell by the way he talks - im glad he said that about God as well. Hes got a magnificent attitude. :)

i wonder how u would control 2 faces...ya know? Like if she 'makes a face', could she do it for one and not the other?

This is not to be rude or anything. Thats just really interesting.

I was wondering the same. Like if she talks, do both mouths talk? If she eats do both mouths chew? Which face do you feed? Do all eyes blink at the same time? Imagine teething? Ouch! Poor kid.

Poor thing, it's great though that her parents seem to be taking her as what she is, a gift from God, and are not thinking about risking her life with surgery.

I feel so bad for the baby, she's not exactly going to live a normal life.

Wow, that is truly amazing. I pray that God will bless her and her family and help them all live a happy life together.

poor girl........:(
i wonder how her sight is going to be...and if the eyes track independently...

I think people saying stuff like "I feel bad" or "poor thing" is sorta demeaning. I know this will make life difficult socially, but I don't think this is technically a disability or anything. If anything, it sounds like a physical convenience, even if it's an inconvenience in other areas.

Saying you feel bad for her only adds to the negativity, really, even if it's not your intention.

But anyway...

... I wonder if she'll be able to make her faces say different things at the same time. There, I said it.

I know she is different, but she looks so sweet to me. I would imagine it is like conjoined twins who are just sharing most everything, even a head. I would think there are two brains which would mean that each set of facial features could move independently and have her own thoughts independent to the other....but that's just a guess.

The parents have a great attitude and that could make all the difference for her.

I saw her on TV, its very curious indeed. I don't approve of them worshipping her though.

I would imagine it would work the same as anyone else :p the muscles in her face will have nerves that will send and receive messages from the Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord). It's only a matter of learning to mimick her parents and the people who are around her whilst she's a baby.

The article said that they were feeding her with one or the other, so I imagine she'd be able to do both :p

I guess either she has two brains or she has the double number of nerves reaching out from only one brain etc. (what both indeed would make it very complicate to impossible to operate her).

Either way I see her body as a huge risk on her health physically and psychologically.

Well she's special and she'll always be... no choice.

I wish her a happy life!

If she had two brains she'd be two people, and I'm pretty sure the article would've mentioned that lol. This happened because twins were developing and one of them didn't make it. The shocking part is that both faces work. Wow.

I have always wondered why kids are born with these horrible disfigurements in foreign countries....

It happens plenty here, but since America thinks America is better than everywhere else, we don't hear as much about it.

i quess that in western europe and america there are more check-up's during pregnancy (echo's) and if parents find out something like this they may choose to stop the pregnancy.

Plus...America is a large country but 'the rest of the world' is still much bigger in population which makes the chances of something like this to happen abroad bigger that the chances of this happening in the US.
