I've watched a few shows on TV where a founder and lead singer gets voted out of the band by his bandmates. How would the leader of the band allow himself to be kicked out? Doesn't the leader have some kind of unspoken immunity against being kicked out?

The lead singer is not necessarily the leader. Like with Van Halen, the band is named after the Van Halen brothers, not David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, or Michael Anthony. Technically Eddie Van Halen is the leader, not Alex his brother. Eddie even fired Mike and replaced him with his son Wolfgang. :D In New Edition, 4 members voted Bobby Brown out because of missing shows and other bad behavior. They later replaced him with Johnny Gill, although Bobby did return in the mid 1990's and the group became 6 members. NE didn't really have a lead singer, there were multiple leads like the Temptations or Dramatics, although it seemed most of the leads were by Ralph Tresvant.

I assumed that the lead singer would always be the leader. Wouldn't that be weird to have a back-up singer be the leader?
