Has any other artists composed music the same way Michael did?

Michael's method for composing music was always interesting to me. Him singing all of his ideas into a tape recorder and then having instrumentalists translate what he did was something I always found interesting and unique.

Has any other artists used this method, or is it something that was only unique to Michael?

James Brown

James Brown would sing or scat to his band members or arranger what he wanted them to play as he couldn't read music. But I don't think James put it on tape beforehand. I've read interviews with other musicians where they said they would hum music or lyric ideas unto a tape so they wouldn't forget them later. But these were people who could play it themselves.
