Handbrake/imovie = slow

I ripped an old home movie dvd to the desktop via Handbrake which went great but uploading it to imovie for editing took 4 hours approx and the dvd itself is only 40 minutes long.
anyone have any ideas on how to improve on the upload times onto imovie ?

Its because when you copied it from the DVD you compressed it (Im assuming to mpeg4) and iMovie has to decompress it to a DV file even a 5 minute clip will take really long.
