Remember Amil Whitehead? The female rapper featured on Jay-Z’s records, ‘Can I Get A..’, ‘Ni*** What, Ni*** Who’, ‘Hey, Papi’ or "Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)”. She then pursued a solo career on Z’s Roc-a-Fella label, with album “All Money Is Legal”.

But, per Wikipedia, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amil_Whitehead#End_of_the_Roc-a-Fella_days_and_Current_Projects), towards the end of her Roc-a-Fella days, Amil gained some weight, which immediately started rumors that she was pregnant. Her weight gain was much to Jay-Z's chagrin, and he publicly chastised her appearance. It is rumored that these factors contributed to Amil's departure from the label and led to her hiatus from the recording industry. She went on a public relations crusade, and her story was heavily circulated through rap music publications prior to her exit from the Roc-a-Fella roster. Amil has been criticized by many artists for her sudden departure from the label and has been pretty much low profile since.

In a 2006 interview, when asked whether female MCs are forced to meet standards that male MCs are not, she said: "Oh, yeah. Definitely. You have to be picture-perfect and you have to meet the standards of the perfect woman. That's unreal to me. Real women do not have plastic-looking bodies. The average woman is not a size 0. You can do what you have to do to keep yourself looking like that or you could just be you. Me, I choose to just be me." She went on to say that she holds no grudges against her former labelmates, though she has no communication with them.

From her 'All Money Is Legal' album, here is a song that offers insight into the music business and, her inspiring independence, and needless to say, is also addressed to rapper Jay-Z (as shown above). It’s called, ‘Quarrels’:

The song’s lyrics are very telling and need no further comment:

[Amil]

Yo, ever since I known you, you been out to get me
Acting like my peeps, but I know that's how you tricked me
Love to see me get high, love to see my tipsy
Heard you even wanna stick a little chip in me
You been trying to play me close ever since my shine
Wanna take me to dinner, feed me shrimp and swine
You said, "Amil I want you to meet a good friend of mine
His name is Money and we partners till the end of time"
Introduced me to your clique, hate, envy, lust and greed
Said you want the whole world in ya custody
And if I give you my soul you'll give me luxuries
Said you could hit me up wit power, it's just up to me
I turn you on when I'm in short skirts and tight jeans
You want my kids to write Santa and celebrate Halloween
Told me sell my people crack and get rich off fens
You love the number 6 but hate the number 13

[Chorus:] [Carl Thomas]
We'll have some quarrels
Some disappointments
And a whole lot of problems
And you will except me

[Amil]

You wanna, be the one to pick me up when I fall
Told me hang Casear bojease on my living room wall
It was always something bout you that made my skin crawl
You turned me into a player and showed me how to ball
You give me rewards when I rob and steal
Want me to abort my babies and get on the pill
You put burners in the hood so each other we kill
I see your eye watching me on the dollar bills
When I got the scoop on you, it just made you mad
Cause I moved out your crib, packed all my bags
Them days I turned to you was the days you laughed
You used to smile every time I pledge allegiance to the flag
We speak now and then but we ain't smacking hands
You be up in the clubs asking me for a dance
Still trying to convince me to go cheat on my man
Begging me to please give you just one more chance

[Chorus:] …

[Amil]

When we was kids you was the one who taught me how to lie
Said I could always use you as my alibi
And you kept me from knowledge, wisdom, and the Most High
Had me believe God had blonde hair and blue eyes
Our relationship went sour since I found the truth
You know you can't have me so you f**** with my youth
You got all my phones tapped, I gotta talk at booths
I learned an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
You built Sodom and Gomorra for us all to live in
When we was cool you used to tell me all your visions
Like how you gonna rule the nations under one religion
You got this New World order, it's like a big prison
You said you wanna be worshipped from noon to noon
Nothings gonna get better is what we all assumed
Cause nights is getting shorter and it's snowing in June
I see you working overtime cause you out of here soon

[Chorus: x2]

I appreciate this woman for her incredibly truthful bluntness. Amazingly.. or not, nobody in the media is focused on such strong artists and people anymore, for their agenda is way different than that. They love obedience, a trait easy to exploit at will. Hopefully, she'll continue to make no compromises, an that some others could follow. ... Wishful thinking? Maybe.. But wanted to make this post and bring this person to attention, sorta break the ice through a much too foggy and stuffy current mainstream atmosphere of Rhiannas, Lady Gagas or Miley Ciruses.

Yeah I remember her name from when she was associated with Jay-Z. Never heard her own songs, tho.
Hmm...if the lyrics can be taken at face value, word by word, sounds like somebody done wronged this woman. I agree, Alma, many times, females in the industry are forced to be either nasty as f*** or ladylike. In case of female rappers, only the former quality seems to be forced down their throat. We got Lauryn Hill (should I say "had"?), but who else really stood out in the mainstream like she did without hoeing herself?

P.S. She sounds a lot like Left-Eye. Cute voice, but not-cute lyrics.
