One-third of Europeans have never been online

A new study shows that one-third of Europeans have never used the internet and more than one in every four European has never used a computer.

According to a report released by the European Union, more than one in every three individuals keen on avoiding the digital world said they did not see the need for a connection and nearly one quarter said they could not afford it.

The study also showed that people older than 65 and the unemployed were the least active online.

This is while the report says that 56% of Europeans had become regular internet users in 2008 and over 80% of them are now using high-speed internet connections.

According to Reuters, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media Viviane Reding said Internet download rules should be changed so that people can have easier access to music and films.

"To release the economic potential of these digital natives, we must make access to digital content an easy and fair game," she said in a statement.

I have no idea..

Pretty much everyone here has a internet connection where i live.

I don't know the situation for whole of Europe but I'm under the impression that we Finns are one of the most active nations on the Internet (when the number of Internet connections is compared to the population). However, I'm sure this varies from place to place here too. People in smaller towns or remote locations may not have access to the Internet quite as much as people in bigger towns. Also, I think the elderly here might not be quite as connected as younger ones. On the other hand, there are special Internet user's courses aimed at the senior population in particular. It's also possible to access the Internet for free or for a small fee at places like libraries or Internet Cafes. So, in the end it comes down to individual choice, the means are there for pretty much anyone to use if they so choose. The connection may not work quite as smoothly in all locations, though. I don't have any statistics to show you, though.

Yep, I found some statistics, though this is six moths old already. According to those tables, 83% of Finns are conncected to The Internet. It doesn't put us in the top ten user countries in Europe, though.

Maybe 1/3 of the Europeans are people older than 65, who don't use the internet, I can imagine that.

OH GOD!!

I think I cant live without the internet now.

~My day job is to teach adults how to read and write. Using a computer and the internet is second nature me, and i was very shocked to see how many of my students dont even know how to switch a computer on.

I think that statistic would be a more accurate portrayal of reality if it specified the countried and included such demographic info as age. Estonia, where I live, is megahuge on IT and virtually everyone has access to the internet, so... I don't know which third of the Europeans they're talking about exactly.

Good god!!!! Who actually has the time on their hands to decide to publish this type of report, theres more important things going on in the friggin world.

To answer its not true just a scathing criticism.

I'm going to guess that the European MJJC posters who answer this question have all been online.

yes we europeans have only recently discovered electricity so this internet thing is still new to us
