Elton John Declares "'War on AIDS' and the 'Fascists, Idiots and @$$holes Who Stigmatise the Disease
Sir Elton John has launched a foul-mouthed attack on the ‘fascists, idiots and a********’ who stigmatise Aids victims.
The singer said doctors and campaigners were on the brink of beating the illness, but attitudes had to change too.
‘This is not a faggots’ f****** disease any more. This is a worldwide disease that affects everybody,’ he said.
Taking a stand: Speaking in Sydney yesterday, Elton John said that the battle against AIDs would never be won unless the stigma associated with the disease was removed
Sir Elton, 64, added: ‘If we can de-stigmatise this disease once and for all, we are really going to beat it.
‘Let’s get rid of this disgusting stigma and get these people who are such fascists, such idiots, and such a******** to understand that people have a right to live with dignity.’
Since 1992 Sir Elton has run the Elton John Aids Foundation, which has raised more than £140million to find a cure.
Speaking in Sydney, Australia on World Aids Day, an annual event to raise awareness of the condition, he said the world needed to ‘fight a new war....to actually kill the disease once and for all.
‘We’ve got this disease really by the scruff of the neck, but we cannot loosen that grip we have on it.
Must take action: Elton said the world needed to 'fight a new war, to get the funding necessary to actually kill the disease once and for all'
‘If governments start backing out and stop funding, then the epidemic will start to balloon again.
‘Let’s get rid of this disease when we have the chance to. And we do have the chance.’
An estimated 91,500 people in Britain, or around 1.5 people per 1,000, are living with HIV, which leads to Aids.
Sir Elton’s partner David Furnish, 49, recently said that he believes a cure for Aids will be developed within the lifetime of their son Zachary, 11 months.
The boy was born to a surrogate mother on Christmas Day last year.
Working towards improvement: The singer, pictured with husband David Furnish, is passionate about fighting AIDS and in 1992 set up the Elton John AIDS Foundation
