September 16, 2015 Vinyl Factory News
Discogs has launched an initiative to rescue obscure music from the dustbin of history.
Online second-hand record marketplace Discogs has set out to “catalog every single piece of music ever created in the world” with a their catchily abbreviated September Pledge Initiative (S.P.IN).
As a near comprehensive second hand marketplace, Discogs has always veered towards being a user-generated archive – a sort of Wikipedia for records. Now, they’re embracing their role as the gatekeepers of history by framing user uploads as serving both the marketplace and the broader good.
At the half way point, the initiative has already ‘rescued’ over 54,000 titles, on track to hit their target of an extraordinary 100,000 new listings in one month. With every user celebrated on a contributor leader board, they’re also picking out the best new uploads as seen on social media, with records, CDs, cassettes and other formats all encouraged.
As well as being entered into a prize draw for a gift set, Discogs explain that “the release you contribute could lead a long forgotten vinyl back to the turntable or maybe even a repressing – and it all begins with a contribution.”
Check it out here and check out the campaign video below.
