Did the Scream single underperform on the charts?

Those were the second and third single releases, respectively. MJ’s first post-allegation single accumulating less radio spins and purchases than any of his previous lead singles can’t be a coincidence.

The Girl Is Mine (the lead single of the Thriller album) didn't reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 either. In the UK The Girls Is Mine peaked at #8. So Scream isn't unique in not reaching number one in the charts.

HIStory had some amazing successful tracks. You Are Not Alone was a massive hit, so was Earth Song in countries where it was released. They Don't Care About Us has become an anthem for many, and a protest song that has only gained relevance. Scream just didn't reach the same level of popularity. I don't think the allegations are to blame for that. It's simply a less popular song.

Scream as a radio friendly hit is not that well remembered but the video certainly is.

Considering how old the song and video now is, I think it remains super fresh and modern especially the video.
