Dealz did an interview with a blog called Band Traffic (long article) -
Dealz « BandTraffic
Not only is he the nephew of pop superstar and music legend Michael Jackson and the son of Jackie Jackson of the famous Jackson 5, he has created a name for himself with his own music. BandTraffic got the huge opportunity to sit down and talk with Siggy “Dealz” Jackson through the phone. Being our first rap/hip hop artist to be featured, we posted the conversation below for everyone to get a glimpse into what Dealz’s music, his new single called “That’s How I Feel”, and his life is all about! Make sure you go to iTunes to buy his new single featuring his father Jackie and his Uncle Jermaine today!
Alexa: So besides it already being in your blood, what made you decide that music is something you wanna do? Like what was the deciding factor?
Dealz: I would actually have to say that it chose me, I guess it’s in my blood but what I see was actually in my blood was racing cars and racing motorcycles. My father crashed in the celebrity races and actually broke his hip and his femur! Do you remember the rock group back in the day that was called Nelson? With blonde hair and all of them?
He raced in the races with them. He actually crashed at turn 6 in Long Beach, shattered his femur and kind of crushed his hip! But I’ve always been into racing since I was a kid and I don’t know, I’ve busted my knee up, I’ve broke a hip and it kept calling me no matter where I go it’s in my face. I mean like literally, I love it though, I can’t…honestly I don’t know what I’d do if I wasn’t doing music. I’d probably be one of those crazy dudes walking down the street talking to himself.
Alexa: So I guess my next question is what do you like to do when you’re not making music but I guess it would just be racing?
Dealz: Actually we do a custom motorcycles, uh, play a lot with actual, I know it’s going to sound kind of childish but I actually do remote control cars and airplanes and bikes. We actually built a dedication vehicle to my Uncle Michael named Melody. It’s a 600 horsepower Mustang with completely custom interior.
Alexa: Yeah I saw the dedication vehicle and I thought it was beautiful.
Dealz: Thank you very much! We’re actually doing that and we’re actually building another one called Smooth Criminal.
Alexa: Oh wow! That’s so amazing!
Dealz! Yeah! So if I wasn’t doing music I’d be in the automotive scene somewhere.
Alexa: Ah okay! Since my site is going to be posting hip/hop and rap artists, you’ll actually be the first, what advice would you give those specific artists starting out in the industry?
Dealz: Ooooh, what can I give to them. Honestly the easiest thing to say would be don’t ever stop. Don’t ever stop. This is a very very very testimony to your strength, it’s a little hard on your soul sometimes and it’s a real test. It’s a real test of yourself. Yeah, I would say don’t’ ever stop. No matter how many “no”s you hear, no matter how many different opinions you face, don’t ever stop.
Alexa: Well said! How did you come up with your artist name “Dealz”?
Dealz: Oh actually it kind of got picked for me. Yeah it picked me because I used to have a slight issue with throwing things on the table and they always like hey you got to keep something to yourself and I’m always like “Yo this is the deal homie, let me lay everything on the table for you”. You know, like it or don’t like it, love it or hate it. But yeah a couple of my friends picked out that name for me, they’re like yo you’re going to be “Dealz” from now on. It’s like you deal with everything, everything in life. Deal with the good, deal with the bad, deal with the sad. So, that’s the name Dealz.
Alexa: That’s good. It’s a great attitude to have towards life.
Dealz: Awh I’m just happy to wake up in the morning.
Alexa: So what do you find yourself most writing about when you’re writing music? Real life experiences or just ideas you’ve created?
Dealz: It’s actually a little different, like as I’m writing my music it depends what I’m stuck on because it really goes with the theme of the track if I’m talking about cars or bikes or whatever. It’s so hard to say to put a topic on it.
Alexa: Okay, so now about your new single, “That’s How I Feel” which was released today which actually features your dad (Jackie Jackson) and your Uncle Jermaine, right?
Dealz: Yupp! It features my father and my Uncle Jermaine who is on it, and my father produced the track and yeah, I ws happy I got to work with my pops again, you know? I also got a chance to work my Uncle Jermaine this time.
Alexa: Yeah! What is that process like for you when you guys are all together?
Dealz: Uhhh even though he’s my father, you know what I mean, I still look at him like oh shit I’m in the realm of the Jacksons. You know they’re such perfectionists when it comes to music it actually makes it real hard to top them. I just want to see him smile. I just want to see him happy with what I’m doing, I can’t complain.
Alexa: I’m sure you have a little bif of…I mean….music should not be about pressure but I’m sure you’ve got pressure.
Dealz: Well honestly I try to think of it as music’s mainly about, I mean, I try to give people a little piece of my soul. A lot of the songs you can hear it like “That’s How I Feel”. It’s a piece of me that you know, I’m actually telling my father about this. He’s actually singing the hook. As far as the bikes and the cars and all that, that’s my main call. I guess I’m just stuck on my Uncle Michael’s word that I think a lot of people have forgotten how to live. They’ve forgotten how much self respect it takes and how it takes respect for other people. My music is for other people it’s not for myself anymore because as soon as I found out that someone was interested in my life, my ego gets shot out the door, I don’t have one anymore. I’ve always been kind of a rebel by myself riding bikes so I’m happy to hear someone is interested in me. I’m like, someone is interested in me!? Oh Jesus thank you God, I’m a happy camper.
Alexa: Awh! So what can we look forward to from you in the future?
Dealz: Well hopefully movies, TV, like I said, I’d just be happy to be able to get up in the future and say hey I was here and I mean, hopefully I have served purpose to some people out there. I hope that the music I put out serves purpose to some people and hopefully in the future I’ll be like Snoop and the rest of them. Giving them some good music to listen to and feel good about.
Alexa: Yupp! That’s beautiful. How do you feel about the music industry today?
Dealz: Uhhhhh, it’s different. It’s different from what I grew up but I like it. We’ve got a lot of raw talent out there, we’ve got a lot of new talent, and I’m just happy to hear something new come out because you know everybody always says that music is such a so to say that everybody follows so when I hear something new I’m always happy.
Alexa: That’s good! It’s kind of hard to keep your mind open with trying to determine what’s real and what’s not real.
Dealz: Exactly. So it’s hard to really say it’s like, well how do I feel about the business? It’s changed for the artists, you know, we get a little more pull, we get a little more say so. Nobody is untouchable anymore. I like it that way though. Like I said I’m not untouchable I’m very very on the ground. I love the business, it’s changed for the better and I think it’s going to change again. It’s coming back around again.
Alexa: I feel the same way. So changing gears a little for this last question. So I’ve watched you speak about your family on Youtube, and for all of that, for lack of a better term, crap people say and believe and I just want to tell you from listening to you I can tell you see the depth and emotion in people. You said something about people who seem to be stubborn, angry, or close minded that they are “people living in fear” which is so true. Everyone seems to jump to conclusions before they know anything so my question is what do you have to say to those people? Do you think they can be changed or helped?
Dealz: Well…everybody can change, once they want to accept it. I think the hardest part of this whole thing we’re having is looking in the mirror to ourselves. We have a lot of probems. They say no great men of any stature or power is without his scars or wounds. Everybody is scared to take the lashing so to say but this is just a part of life. This is what defines us as a character, it’s not the money, it’s not the success, it’s about what you go through and how many times you can pick yourself up. That’s what’s going to define your character in life to say this is that man or this is that woman. I think anybody can change if they’re willing and open to accept it, I really do. I really hope people are really open to hear that saying because we have nothing else but us and I mean if we all fall in on each other then that’s the end of the world. I really feel they can change and my Uncle Michael said something to me that really hits a lot which was, “There’s no such thing as a bad comment.” You just have to take the good from it. We’re only human beings and there’s nobody perfect. In short, you have to sift through shit to get your gold.
Alexa: That’s amazing. Well put. Is there anything else you want people to know?
Dealz: I guess in short was I really hope they remember the type of man that my uncle was and what he lived for in life. Which was peace, love, and all the rest. Do onto others as others do onto you and I don’t know in short I miss the man, I got a new album coming out, I pray it goes well because it’s not up to me. I just hope I can deliver what the fans and what everybody wants.
Alexa: Oh I’m sure it will! Thank you so much for doing this it means so much!
