Tragic deaths happen every day, but when someone famous dies it send reverberations throughout the culture. In a small way, the shock of a celebrity death is good, because it makes us reflect on our mortality. Hopefully, this reflection wakes us up to the reality of how short life really is, and in turn, helps us to slow down, enjoy life and make the right decisions..

Musicians have a reputation for living on the edge, and many have paid the ultimate price. .

For this playlist I have selected my top picks for musicians who died too soon. Specifically, before the age of thirty. As I looked through this completed list what amazed me most was not the tragedy of a life cut short, but the accomplishments achieved by those so young..

Dead Too Soon: Musicians Who Died Before Age 30.

Cross Road Blues - Robert Johnson

Age: 21
Eddie Cochran was touring overseas when he got into a taxi at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. Unfortunately, his driver was reckless and crashed into a lamp post killing Eddie after he was thrown from the vehicle. The cab driver went to jail for 6 months and lost his license for 15 years..

4. Ritchie Valens
La Bamba - Ritchie Valens
May 13, 1941 – February 3, 1959
Age: 17
Ritchies Valens is the forefather of Chicano rock and had an extremely bright future ahead of him. Unfortunately, he was on the same plane that Buddy Holly was on "the day the music died". Also of note that day is the death of J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson" (Age: 28) who was also on the plane and known for his hit song "Chantilly Lace"..

5. Jimi Hendrix

After the tragic airplane accident that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, I would have to say that the next most tragic music related airplane crash would be the one that took the lives of three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd on October 20, 1977..

8. Otis Redding
(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding

Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
December 6, 1956 – March 19, 1982

Ozzy Osbourne's legendary and extremely talented guitarist was also taken from us in a plane crash. But this time the cause of the crash was pure stupidity. The pilot (Andrew Aycock) who had promised a safe flight (as Randy was afraid of flying) thought it would be a great idea to "buzz" the tour bus and wake the rest of the band. On the fourth attempt a wing clipped the bus and crashed killing all onboard the plane instantly. No drugs were found in Randy's body, but the pilot tested positive for cocaine..

The official cause of death is listed as "acute heroin/morphine and ethanol intoxication due to inhalation and ingestion of overdose". The young and talented Aaliyah is yet another musician killed in a plane crash. An autopsy also showed that the pilot had cocaine and alcohol in his system..

16. Janis Joplin
Piece Of My Heart - Janis Joplin
January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970
Age: 27
Janis Joplin looked older than her young 27 years. This was no doubt due to her hard-living rock and roll lifestyle, which included large amounts of drugs and alcohol. It caught up with her in early October, 1970. The official cause of death is listed as an overdose of heroin..

17. Jim Morrison (The Doors)
The End - The Doors
December 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971

September 26, 1967 – October 21, 1995
Age: 28

Thanks for sharing. Three came to my mind immediately:

In the jazz world, although I know there are more, one came to mind, cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, compared to Louis Armstrong in his day, was one who died much to soon:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bix_Beiderbecke

Also, although she was 31, the wonderful chanteuse Minnie Ripperton left this world before we would've liked.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnie_Ripperton

Likewise, the song bird with the lovely voice, Eva Cassidy who, at 33, died much too young and only received the recognition for her work after her death.

OK so one of my favorite Musicians died at age 34. So I know he was over 30, but was just over 30 and to me was really talented.

One of my favorite bands is Alice In Chains. Their lead singer Layne Staley died in 2002 from a drug overdose. A combination of Heroin and Cocaine were found in his system. To all of you who may not know the story of how he died....well here it is. It is probably one of the saddest ways to die too. That is why even though he was over 30, I felt it was OK to post this here. Here it is-

This is a part of a story about Layne Staley written whey he died (that is why this part seems to be like there was something written before it, but I chose this because it's a pretty good summary of things that happened). This was taken from Askanswers.com-

"But the sporadic work eventually ground to a halt, as Staley seemed more interested in feeding his drug habit than pursuing music. His life took a turn for the worst in 1996 when his fiancée died from drugs, which friends say made the former Alice in Chains frontman blot out the pain with further drug abuse. During the last few years of his life, Staley rarely left his Seattle condominium, and refused to answer the door or phone when former bandmates or friends came around to check on the singer's condition (which had supposedly deteriorated to the point that he had lost most of his teeth and had abscesses all over his arms). Although it shouldn't have come as quite a surprise, the rock music world was shocked when Staley's dead body was found on a sofa in his condo, the victim of a lethal overdose of heroin and cocaine. Since the body had been in the apartment for two weeks and had begun to decompose, it was hard to determine at first the exact date of Staley's passing. Eventually, a date was determined, which proved to be eerie -- April 5, 2002 -- exactly eight years to the day that another leading figure of the early '90s Seattle rock scene also took his life, Kurt Cobain. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide "

Very sad. Many people feel that Nirvana and Alice in Chains were the Beatles and the Rolling Stones of Grunge (although I really don't think that Alice ever belonged in that category). So for Kurt and Layne to die the same day just different years makes it even more eerie.

The fact that he had so dropped out of life that it took two weeks for anyone to know he was dead is just the saddest part for me. This was a man with so many fans, that was famous. And he died totally alone, and no one knew for two weeks. My God how sad is that? On so many levels. The only reason anyone knew that something may be wrong is because his accountants noticed that money was no longer coming out of his account (it came out everyday for the purchasing of drugs they knew). So when it stopped and just did not pick up again after two weeks, that is when the Police were summoned to do a wellness check on Layne. And as you read, by then he had long left this earth.

For all of you who have no idea who Layne Staley is, or who Alice in Chains are and don't know what a talent music lost that day in April 2002 here is a video showing just how amazing Layne's voice was. There has never been, nor will there ever be anyone that sounds like Layne again. He had the most amazing beautiful voice. It was just incredible. And Alice's music is just incredible....
Here is a video of Layne at his best-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfFtyOpwQkQ

It is also a tribute set to the song.... too. Love this song as well.....

Thanks for reading, and who knows maybe I converted some new fans to AIC......

This is so sad, I was upset reading that post and then I scrolled down and saw Michael's picture in your signature and it just broke my heart.

I miss him.

British police to review 1969 death of Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones

By Matt Surman,Meera Selva, The Associated Press

LONDON - Forty years after the body of Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones was found floating in his swimming pool, British police said Monday they are reviewing new evidence about his death turned over by an investigative journalist.

Though Jones' 1969 drowning was ruled an accident linked to a drug and alcohol binge, friends and fans have long insisted the rock star was murdered, and reports have swirled of a death bed confession by a building contractor.

Sussex police in southeast England said they will examine new documents received from a journalist relating to Jones' death. They have not yet decided whether to officially reopen the case.

"It's too early to comment at this time as to what the outcome might be," the Sussex duty inspector said, reading a statement over the telephone. Police did not give further details.

The Mail on Sunday reported that journalist Scott Jones - who is not related to the musician - has handed over 600 documents.

Jones, a founding member of the Rolling Stones, reportedly came up with the band's name, taking it from a song title on a Muddy Waters album cover. Formed in 1962, the band branched out from blues covers to become pivotal in the so-called British Invasion, drawing fans attracted by their rebellious image and surly but sexy style.

"In the beginning, Brian Jones was the real catalyst for the Rolling Stones, the smart, handsome, multi-instrumentalist leader who the blues and galvanized the band," Jasen Emmons, the director of curatorial affairs at Seattle's Experience Music Project, said in an email.

But his role started to shrink "and his legendary substance abuse made him less reliable and desirable, although it didn't hurt the Stones' reputation as one of rock n' roll's most dangerous bands."

Jones was eclipsed by swaggering lead singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, whose songwriting propelled the band's popularity. Increasingly marginalized and drawn to drugs and alcohol, Jones was convicted twice on narcotics charges, avoiding jail by promising to quit his habit. He quit the band a month before his death and was replaced by Mick Taylor.

He stood out even among his band mates for his flashy clothes and prodigious appetite for drugs. He died July 2, 1969 at age 27, his body found in the swimming pool at his 11-acre 4.5-hectare Sussex estate.

Two 1994 books claimed that Jones was murdered by a London builder who had been hired to help renovate Jones' home: "Paint it Black: The Murder of Brian Jones," by Geoffrey Giuliano and "Who Killed Christopher Robin?" by Terry Rawlings.

Both claimed that builder Frank Thorogood confessed on his deathbed in November 1993 to killing Jones.

"It was me that did Brian. I just finally snapped," Thorogood reportedly said to road manager Tom Keylock, Rawlings' book quoted Keylock as saying.

It was not clear why British police did not reopen an investigation after those books were published.

Scott Jones interviewed Janet Lawson, the person who discovered the guitarist's body, shortly before she died last year. In the interview, published in The Mail on Sunday last November, Lawson claimed that Keylock, her boyfriend at the time, had asked her to visit Brian Jones because he was worried about tensions between Jones and Thorogood.

The night Jones died, official reports say there were three guests at his home at Cotchford Farm in Hartfield, east Sussex - Lawson, Thorogood, and Jones's girlfriend Anna Wohlin. All three gave statements to police saying Jones had been drinking that evening. Lawson later told Scott Jones that the police had pressured her.

"The police were trying to put words into my mouth," she is reported as saying.

She told Scott that the evening Jones died, they had all eaten in the early evening, and that Jones and Thorogood began fooling around in the swimming pool. She said a short while later Jones, who was by then in the pool alone, asked her to find her asthma inhaler.

"I went to look for it by the pool, in the music room, the reception room and then the kitchen," she said. "Frank came in a lather, his hands were shaking. He was in a terrible state. I thought the worst almost straight away and went to the pool to check. When I saw Brian on the bottom of the pool and was calling for help, Frank initially did nothing."

She told the journalist her original police statement did not mention any tensions between Jones and Thorogood, or the fact that Thorogood initially ignored her cries for help.

Keylock died in July 2009, according to the British newspaper, The Times.

Scott Jones also spoke to Bob Marshall, the chief investigating officer of the case. Marshall retired in 1974, but still occasionally responds to questions about the case. He told the reporter he still believed Jones' death was "a tragic accident, a simple drowning."

The title of Rawlings' book, "Who Killed Christopher Robin?," is a reference to Jones' estate, which was formerly the home of the late A.A. Milne, author of "Winnie the Pooh," which features the character Christopher Robin.

The Rolling Stones are one of the most influential and biggest-selling rock bands in the world, with album sales estimated at more than 200 million copies. The band's long list of classic hits include "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Street Fighting Man" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want.""

The band is now made up of Jagger, Richards, Ronnie Wood - who replaced Taylor in 1975 - and drummer Charlie Watts. Emails and phone calls to the groups' publicists and record labels were unanswered.

The Stones topped Forbes' rich list for music acts in 2007, earning some US$88 million between June 2006 and June 2007, mostly from their "Bigger Bang Tour."

Jackie Wilson.. he was one of Michaels idols and he died at only 49.. He fell off the stage and went into a coma.. very sad

Another that hurt for me, someone who was over 30 but still died too young is John Denver. He was just 53 and had a ton of life left in him. His music meant so much to me since I was a little kid. I saw him when I was like five years old in Denver (at the same arena I would later see Michael my one and only time.) Remember that footage of Michael whistling the song Calypso while in Berlin in 2002? I was like... whoa, I know that song... that's John Denver ;)

John was another angel for the Earth and its creatures, extremely active in charity and humanitarian work, founding his own charity and he had just filmed a special for PBS about the Alaskan wilderness and his trip down the Colorado River (Grand Canyon) right before he passed away. He was a pilot and died in yet another plane crash in his newly-purchased experimental craft. It crashed into the Pacific, just off the coast of California on October 12, 1997. That sucked. The cause was that the design had been altered by the previous owner and John wasn't aware that the alternate fuel tank lever wasn't where it was supposed to be, so he ran out of fuel and couldn't switch tanks quickly enough.

So I always think of it like this... Princess Diana went on Aug 31, 1997. Michael said in the Barbara Walters interview that he knew/felt there was another one coming and prayed it wasn't him (him being Michael, himself). Well, next came Mother Teresa, just a few days later on September 5, 1997. You know how things "come in 3's"... I also felt Michael was somehow in danger at that time. It was like God was taking the angels back. Well, the third actually ended up being John Denver a month later. Three amazing and inspirational people who were known for their charity work and really making a difference in the world, all taken in a short time during the second half of 1997. Very sad.

Aaliyah
Left Eye
Biggie
Tupac
Gerald Levert and Sean Levert

John Lennon, one of my music idols, died at the age of 40, leaving a 5-year-old son and a 17-year-old son.

George Harrison died too young as well, at age 58.

May all these amazing musicians rest in peace.

Yeah it's pretty depressing readin it. so sad :(

I was sad when I heard about Aaliyah's death. She just became popular in europe/germany and I really liked "come back in one piece" and "we need a resolution".. I was shocked and it's so sad because she was very young and she could have achieved a lot now!

YES! Left eye, she was over 30... gosh, I really loved her. I heard TLC when I was 11 for the first time and I thought the t-boz and chili were "boring"... ok, bit harsh, but lisa was different, she was the crazy one and i remember sittin in my room listening to waterfalls over and over again and trin to rap like her LOL. i had their posters in my room for years. on that day I had a sports lesson in school and my teacher thought we should listen to some music, so we listened to tlc and again I was rapping to waterfalls and tellin people that i am a fan and that i love the song... when i got home i heard the news and cried immediately. I was VERY sad.

But there's one person you forgot. He is not that known, but we fans know him.

Wylie Draper, the one you played michael in "the american dream"

born May 5th 1969
died Dec 20th 1993
rare form of leukemia

I was sad when I heard it, he was the perfect michael!

I don't know if she has been mentioned yet, but Amy Winehouse died at 27 last year after a drug overdose. She was one of the few singers of this generation with real talent, so I hope that people will still listen to her music.

^^^ She did not die of a drug overdose. I believe it was alcohol poisoning. It was media oulets condemning her of this before even giving her a chance.

Still, her death was terrible either way.

It was a terrible and tragic death. The media reported different things, so I wasn't sure how she really died. Still, the world lost a great talent that day...

I bumped this thread because I've been really memorized with Shannon Hoon lately, it crosses my mind, like I never knew he had such an amazing voice. He was so gorgeous.

I also thought Jeff Buckley was great too, love his song "Grace" and they are making a Jeff Buckley movie that comes out in 2013!!!

Amy Winehouse, I always miss her, she was edgy and classy, very unique.
May they all RIP. :flowers:
