Mandela celebrated his 80th birthday by marrying his sweetheart, 52 year-old Graca Machel, on July 18, 1998. The two exchanged vows in a private civil ceremony at Mandela's home outside of Johannesburg, followed by his birthday celebration the next day attended by 2,000 guests. 2008 - The Thriller 25th Anniversary Special Edition is released in Europe. Jackson issued a 25th anniversary edition of his top-selling album Thriller called Thriller 25. It is a double disc album; disc one contains the original nine tracks from "Thriller", five remixed "Thriller" tracks, a song originally recorded in the Thriller era called "For All Time", a voice over by Vincent Price and featured will.i.am, Fergie, Kanye West, and Akon, with single releases alongside the album. Disc two is a DVD which contains the three music videos from "Thriller" and Jackson's performance of "Billie Jean" at Motown 25.
Internationally, "The Girl Is Mine 2008" was released as a single, while in the United States, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" was the first single, both of which were moderately successful. Thriller 25 was a commercial success, having done particularly well as a re-issue, peaking at number one in eight countries, Europe and the United World Chart. It peaked at #2 in the United States, #3 in the United Kingdom and reached the Top 10 in over thirty national charts. Thriller 25 spent three weeks at #1 in France, two weeks at number one on the "United World Chart", Argentina and Belgium. It has been certified gold in 11 countries, including the United Kingdom. In Poland, on release day, the album was certified gold, reaching #6 on the charts and is Jackson's highest charting album in Norway. In France, Thriller 25 received a 2 times gold certification, and in Poland it was certified platinum. The United World Chart is a worldwide chart issued every week by Media Traffic, using both sales (digital and physical) and airplay to determine the most popular albums and singles worldwide. In the United States, Thriller 25 was the second best-selling album of its release week, selling 166,000 copies, just 14,000 short of reaching the number one position. It was ineligible for the Billboard 200 chart as a re-release but entered the Pop Catalog Charts at number one, where it stayed for nine non-consecutive weeks and had the best sales on that chart since December 1996. This was Jackson's best launch since Invincible in 2001, with 500,000 copies in the US and 1.8 million copies sold in 12 weeks. Top Pop Catalog Albums is a weekly albums chart produced by Billboard magazine which ranks the best selling catalog titles, regardless of genre.

A judge is scheduled to decide Thursday whether Michael Jackson's father should receive medical records related to his superstar son's death.
Joe Jackson's attorney issued a subpoena last month seeking all his son's medical records from UCLA Medical Center, where Michael Jackson died on June 25.
His attorney, Brian Oxman, sought the files as part of an effort to obtain a monthly stipend for the Jackson family patriarch. He says his client has a right to know more about his son's death and the records could also determine whether they pursue a wrongful death lawsuit.

Attorneys for Michael Jackson's estate want the judge to quash the subpoenas and argue they violate privacy rights and are not relevant to the allowance request. If they win, they want Oxman and Joe Jackson to pay nearly $9,000 in legal fees.
Oxman says Joe Jackson will not attend Thursday's hearing.

But Jackson is not the only addition, he will appear posthumously in a split-screen with his sister, Janet Jackson (in the accompanying video).

Interesting commentary

Was MJ Death Biggest Story of 2009?

That is not the kind of question you would expect from a lonely blogger in the mountains of Uzbekistan or a relief worker in a refugee camp in the Sudan, or any of a thousand and one places on earth where local and personal problems are a lot more consequential to people´s lives than what music they like to listen to, or what to wear to the mall on Saturday night. On the other hand, I think we should also hold our own perspectives from being too critical, because we should also be very glad that there are substantial numbers of young people living safe and secure lives isolated from the direct effects of war, famine and life threatening diseases, a condition for which we should also be grateful.

The website Yedda, one which promotes public discussions of all sorts of issues from the most serious to the most flighty, asked me to answer the question "Was MJ Death Biggest Story of 2009?" from a user who calls herself "Gossip Gal" (and says she´s a 22 year old, female from the United Kingdom, but you never know on the internet).

I never understood why serious members of the judiciary let Mr. Jackson be harassed by the witch hunt and extortion schemes that he faced in court. Certainly if the "welfare of the child" was the primary concern, no one was as damaged by being exposed to Mr. Jackson as they were by being exposed to the kangaroo courts that eventually acquitted him. But in any case, Michael played a role in history which today´s younger fans may not have recognized, so I decided to give this young lady my serious answer. It now appears on the Yedda site like this.

Begin quoted passage from Yedda.com website ---------------

Michael Jackson's talent was immense. He was one of the greatest dancers of the 20th century, rivaling if not equal to Fred Astaire. He was also the best all-around entertainers since Sammy Davis, Jr. and possibly even better than that, although we didn't get to see Michael doing much "acting", especially comedy as Sammy Davis did. His international celebrity/fame was (and is) in the same class (though perhaps not as lasting) as the Beatles. (For you young folks, the fact that these are all references that go back a LONG way before you were born is partly a measure of the greatness, especially the next one.) As a composer he was an innovator and a trend setter, that could be said to put him in the category of the classical composers like Beethoven and Brahms (though not quite J.S. Bach, IMO).

As a CELEBRITY NEWS item, Michael's death is probably THE top story (unless you are from the "business" side of show business, in which case the massive income from "Avatar" might be more "important").

As a WORLD NEWS event, something affecting history, something with a lasting impact on the future, Americans electing a non-Caucasian, half-African (more specifically a half-Kenyan) who took office in 2009 as their President, and one for whom one of his parents relatives were (mostly) all raised as Muslims in Africa, is a more important story, a more amazing story, and honestly, a story that Michael Jackson's national and international artistic and commercial success may have helped make possible because of how, outside of the African-American community, his race was not important to the rest of the world. Michael Jackson made us all a little more "color blind", and was at least one factor in making President Obama's election possible.

Michael Jackson's death was a great tragedy of 2009, Barack Obama's presidency was a possible turning point in history, especially his outreach to the rest of the world, and to suspicious Muslim nations in particular. His speeches in Turkey and Egypt changed the tone of American policy and brought America into a more favorable light in many corners of the world. I certainly hope it will continue for a long time to come.

Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones Spill 'We Are the World' Secrets

Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones dish to ET's Mary Hart about producing the star-studded re-recording of "We Are the World," and they reveal more details about Michael Jackson's role in the upcoming music video!
Lionel and Quincy tell Mary exactly how Michael, who co-wrote the original charity anthem with Lionel and appeared in its music video, will be inserted into the remake's video.
"In his original spot," Quincy reveals. "It's exactly like his original spot. And you'll also have an image of Janet there with him."
"When you're doing the song again, the only person that I was missing in the room that I really, really missed was Michael's presence, and I'm sure Quincy felt the same way," Lionel says. "So, to have him singing that part again was just comforting I think for both us because it needed to be there."
Keep watching the video for Lionel and Quincy's take on overseeing the "organized chaos" of the star-studded re-recording -- and for the dish on whether they had to deal with any divas!

I'm a huge NBA fan, so I'm excited to hear that Demar Derozan will do something in honor for Michael during the slam dunk contest.

The Slam Dunk contest during All-Star weekend is probably the 2nd most popular event after the actual game, so a lot of people will see this tribute!

Thanks for the news!

MJ’S ESTATE RESPONSE TO JOE JACKSON

Lawyers for Michael Jackson's estate have fired back at Joe Jackson's request for MJ's medical records in order for Joe to sue a news outlet over death photos.
Joe claims a published photo of an already dead Michael Jackson is an invasion of the family's privacy.
Although Joe didn't name the news outlet, "Entertainment Tonight" aired a photo of Jackson -- whom paramedics believed was already dead -- as he was taken into an ambulance from his home.
Joe's lawyer, Brian Oxman, asked the judge last Friday to dislodge MJ's UCLA medical records so he can prepare the lawsuit.
But in papers filed today, estate lawyer Howard Weitzman claims that Oxman misstated the law in legal documents and that UCLA medical records are totally irrelevant to a death photo lawsuit.
Weitzman also claims the physician/patient privilege prohibits the estate from anteing up the medical records.

MORE REACTION FROM THE JACKSON FAMILY

After appearing together at Monday's arraignment for Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael's family issued a series of statements decrying the doctor's not-guilty plea to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. "He's lying. He's guilty. Nobody was there but him," Michael's mother, Katherine, told the assembled media while leaving court. "He's just trying to save his own behind. ... He killed him. He wasn't monitoring him."

MJ ESTATE ADMINISTRATORS GET 10% OF PROFITS

The two men administering Michael Jackson's estate will receive a total of 10 percent of the profits minus several sizable assets, a judge agreed Wednesday.
Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved the compensation for attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, who have been administering the singer's estate since shortly after his death on June 25.
Branca and McClain will each receive five percent of the estate's profits, minus earnings from the recent "This Is It" movie and Jackson's interest in the lucrative Sony-ATV music catalog.
Beckloff approved the arrangement after discussing it with various attorneys representing Branca, McClain, Jackson's children and the singer's mother, Katherine Jackson.
None of them raised any objections to the arrangement.
Howard Weitzman, an attorney for Branca and McClain, said the men would be fairly compensated but likely receive less money than if they received guideline amounts for administering Jackson's estate, which has an estimated value of more than $500 million.
"They will be fairly compensated," Weitzman said.
Katherine Jackson's attorney, Adam Streisand, agreed.
"I think that this is very reasonable," he said. "There is an incentive for the executors to grow the business and that will, of course, affect their compensation."
Weitzman noted that Branca represented Michael Jackson throughout his life and that McClain is a childhood friend of the singer.
Beckloff is retaining some oversight over the payments and scheduled a progress report for September. But he expressed faith in Branca's leadership of the estate. The judge recalled a hearing last year in which Branca testified by phone about his business connections and a deal for Jackson merchandise and a memorabilia exhibition.
"I found him extraordinarily impressive," Beckloff said, noting that's not a distinction he normally draws about people from a phone conversation.

THIS IS IT’ EARNS ‘BEST EDITED DOCUMENTARY’ NOMINATION

American Cinema Editors, the industry's leading organization of motion picture editors, has nominated Brandon Key, of Tustin, CA, for a 60th annual ACE Eddie Award. The announcement was made Jan. 12. Key's "Best Edited Documentary" nomination, for his work on the critically acclaimed Michael Jackson film "This Is It," is shared by co-editors Tim Patterson, Don Brochu and Kevin Stitt. Winners will be announced by ACE on Feb. 14.
Shortly after the world learned of the death of the legendary King of Pop, Key, a long-time Jackson fan, received a frantic call from Patterson, a friend and collaborator of 15 years, to help cobble together what had been raw rehearsal footage of Michael's international tour into a full-length documentary for an ASAP theatrical release.
Quite unexpectedly, Key and his cohorts found themselves laboring over piles of video footage 12 hours a day, seven days a week last summer in a frantic effort to create a posthumous Michael Jackson film tribute for a fast-approaching October release. "This Is It" opened last fall to huge audiences. "I just never dreamed," Key stated, "that I'd be thrust into helping create what would become one of the biggest movies of the year -- and the highest-grossing concert film of all time."
That accomplished, Key and Patterson have gone on to edit and shoot additional content for the DVD, which is expected to ship this month.

The administrators of the estate, John Branca and John McClain have filed papers to oppose the motion.

Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones honour Michael Jackson in the new version of ?We Are the World?

LOS ANGELES — The late Michael Jackson has a prominent role in the revamped version of "We Are the World."
Lionel Richie, who wrote the original charity anthem with Jackson, says the King of Pop can be seen in the new video for the track, singing with his sister Janet. "We left the original footage of that part, but now he is singing with his sister," Richie said.
"It's something we wanted to see, but his mother requested it too, for Janet to sing with Michael," said Quincy Jones, who produced the original track and helped orchestrate the re-recording. "It was perfect. It was meant to be."
The video is set to make its debut Friday during coverage of the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics. "We Are the World - 25 for Haiti" features 80 artists, including Pink, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Kanye West and Jennifer Hudson.
Proceeds from sales of the song will benefit earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti.

Four-year-old wows crowd with Michael Jackson routine at 'Britain's Got Talent' auditions

alg_michael_jackson_dancing.jpg

Four-year-old Kayim-Ali Jaffer (not shown) made a good show of following in Michael Jackson's footsteps in an audition for 'Britain's Got Talent.'

This isn't child's play.
Four-year-old Kayim-Ali Jaffer wowed the judges on "Britain's Got Talent" with a Michael Jackson dance routine that brought the crowd to its feet as he auditioned for the series at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, the U.K.'s Daily Mail reports.
The youngster is considered a lock for the upcoming season of the popular TV show, set to begin airing in May - but not everyone is happy.
Child welfare activists are concerned about the pressures that will be placed on young Jaffer, after ten-year-old Hollie Steel broke down in tears in front of millions of viewers while competing on the last season of the show.
"He may be talented but you have to remember that this little boy has only been talking for a few years - now he is performing in front of a huge audience and will be seen by millions," says Claude Knights, director of Kidscape, a charity dedicated to protecting children from abuse.

"Unless he wins he is also going to have to deal with rejection. I am not sure it is fair to have someone so young compete like that," adds Knights.
But if Jaffer was feeling the pressure during his audition routine, he certainly didn't show it.
Decked out in a fedora and tiny white suit, the child prodigy danced to the King of Pop's song "Smooth Criminal," after teaching himself the routine by watching a Jackson DVD.
The performance elicited a motherly response from judge Amanda Holden. "I just want to give you a cuddle," she told the young contestant.
Jaffer's parents insist that their child is happy performing for large crowds.
"He is unbelievably confident - he has already told us he wants to dance in front of the Queen," his mother told the British newspaper.
But Knights doesn't buy it.
"It seems that the age at which people are appearing on these programs is getting younger," the activist says. "What next? Two-year-olds on stage and then being voted on or off 'Britain's Got Talent'?"

S.F. Michael Jackson tribute band changes name under threat from King of Pop's estate

PHOTO COURTESY OF FOREVERLAND The San Francisco Michael Jackson tribute band Neverland says it...

Bay Area band Neverland has been paying tribute in concert to the late Michael Jackson since June. Until now.
The 14-piece band will continue to perform Jackson songs for fans of the King of Pop, but will have to do so under a different name after receiving a threatening letter from Jackson's estate.
The estate threatened to take "appropriate legal action" to stop the group from using the Neverland name, according the a press release issued by the band. The warning was reportedly made in a letter from Greenberg Taurig, a lawyer representing Jackson's estate, citing trademark law that prohibits the band's use of "Neverland."
The moniker is surely well known to Jackson fans — it was the name of Jackson's famed Santa Barbara ranch. But the title predates Jackson by several decades, having first been popularized in the J.M. Barrie's play "Peter Pan." So Neverland band leader Morty Okin says he was surprised to receive the letter from the Jackson Estate.
"It came as a complete shock," Okin said in a statement. "I thought they were kidding. I mean here's this behemoth, the Michael Jackson Estate, and they're coming after our little tribute band in San Francisco? Neverland is from a book. Did Tinkerbell send Captain Hook to have a face to face with MJ's lawyers about the name of his ranch?"
Lawyers for Jackson's estate were not immediately available for comment.
Not wanting to get into a lengthy and costly legal battle with the estate, the band felt its only avenue was to change its name. The terms of the settlement are still being worked out, but the band has already decided to change its name — to Foreverland.

Under this new name, the group will still perform concerts in tribute to Jackson. For information about upcoming shows, visit site www.foreverlandsf.com.

Kayim-Ali Jaffer: Jackson Junior wows Britain‘s Got Talent judges, but at four is he being exploited?

He is a prince among the King of Pop imitate.

In just four years old, Kayim-Ali Jaffer has in the spotlight after impressing Britain‘s Got Talent judges with a self-taught Michael Jackson dance routine.

The youth is described as a shoo-in for the semifinals of the last series has been praised to the audition as a "little genius".

But his shooting triggered a new row over the exploitation of children in television.

Eyebrows were raised by cynics about the fact BGT had exposed her youngest participant, just in time for a new series in May.

The reality show was last year‘s sharp criticism for its action of the ten-year-old Hollie Steel, who broke down in tears in front of millions of spectators.

Kayim-Ali, dressed in Jackson‘s trademark Fedora and a small white dress, proud of their dance steps to the star‘s 1988 hit Smooth Criminal auditioned in front of Simon Cowell and his judges.

Amanda Holden cooed: "I just want to give you a cuddles.

The routine left the audience at the Hammersmith Apollo stand on their feet in clapping.
A member of the audience said: "Everyone screamed, but Kayim-Ali was a little confused, and he jumped off the stage before the judges had put him through, and he had to be pushed rear on stage.

"He‘s a shoo-in to reach the semi-finals alive, he is very talented.

Children‘s Organizations, however, is worried about the pressures that young people can add.

Claude Knights, director of Kids Cape, said: "He may be talented, but you must remember that this little boy who only spoke a couple of years - now he‘s performing in front of a large audience, and will be seen by millions.
"If he wins, he will also have to deal with rejection. I‘m not sure that it is reasonable to have one so young to compete in this way.
