Liz Smith: Michael Jackson – How Little We Knew

2009_0831_gq_michael_jackson_crop.jpg

"But of all the things that make Michael unknowable, thinking we knew him is maybe the most deceptive. Let’s suspend it," writes John Jeremiah Sullivan on Michael Jackson.

Wow! That’s all I can say after getting a look at the September GQ with previously unseen photos of Michael. So fresh, so vibrant, so … well, butch! There is a perceptive article by Mr. Sullivan that accompanies the photos, but the images take precedence, and Michael’s unsullied youthful appearance render the circumstances of his later life and his tragic death all the more wrenching.

The media has written so much about Michael. And with such assurance! He was this. He wasn’t that. So, I especially liked our opening quote from Sullivan’s article.

Janet Jackson, the other talent in the family, has agreed to chair amFAR’s September 28 Milan Fashion Week event. Miss Jackson has always been a dedicated philanthropist and AIDS activist. There is a lot to like about Janet, her infamous "costume malfunction" notwithstanding.

Jackson honored with Las Vegas star

LAS VEGAS, (UPI) -- The late pop star Michael Jackson has been honored in Las Vegas with a star on the Palms Casino Resort's Walk of Fame, his father says.

Jackson's father, Joe, spoke to those in attendance at Saturday's Walk of Fame event in honor the "Beat It" singer, who died on June 25 at the age of 50, People.com reported.

"I wish he was here to see this take place," Joe Jackson said.
Event emcee Robin Leach said the initial plan for the Walk of Fame event was for Jackson to accept the star following the pop star's series of London performances this year. The Walk of Fame star dedicated to Jackson rests in front of Las Vegas' Brenden Theatres.

People magazine said singer Liza Minnelli also remembered the late pop star Saturday. Minnelli took time during a Los Angeles performance to offer some kind words about Jackson on what would have been his 51st birthday.

"Today would have been Michael Jackson's birthday. And I loved him with all of my heart, and I will miss him for the rest of my life," Minnelli said.

Today in
Michael Jackson History

1987 - CBS-TV aired a special entitle "Michael Jackson - The Magic Returns." Also, the 17-minute "Bad" video was aired.

1993 - Michael Jackson's doctor announced that he was fit following a brain scan.

1993 - Tito and Jermaine Jackson walked off the set of NBC-TV's "Today" show when a crew arrived to interview the two about the troubles of their brother Michael with the Los Angeles Police Department. The two later held a press conference where they stated their support for their brother.

2001 - Michael Jackson rang the opening NASDAQ bell at the NASDAQ market site in Times Square.

That GQ article was full of horse manure, the cover is gorgeous the rest is beyond insulting then again that's what many in the media are going for with Michael they bashed him in life, and are continually trashing him in death!

I agree I read it while I was in the drugstore and the only thing worth looking at was the pictures.. I hate when they write never before seen pictures.. lol because we the fans have seen every pic of Mike ever posted, we are just waiting on the family to release more candid photos..lol

I miffed at CNN...when the report came out on Friday ...CNN had the headlines...saying Michael overdosed....it stayed there on Sat...now today..the same article but the headline read....coroner said Michael's death is a homicide...

see the trick............the media is dispicable...

that is why I think it would be great if we fans mobilize and become a force to act on facts...to get things done....

speculations and guesses are not going to get us much...but headaches and confusion....

yesterday Frank was the answer to all Michael problems - some said- today...he is Judas....what is going on here..........???? I like a good conspiracy theory like anyone ...but we might be missing some precious things while we allow the negative forces to take over our thoughts and feelings on Michael...

Let's see...what facts can we act on....??? Michael didn't like to see children hungry or suffering.....................can we fans do something and mobilize on this??? support a charity??? help a neighbor??

Let's see....ABC hired Bashir right after LWMJ..he was rewarded for dubbing Michael..can we mobilize and get ABC to know how millions of his fans feel about this... what can we do to be effective?

Let's see...how can we mobilize to get MTV to be more supportive of Michael???...what project can we come up with that might achieve this??

remember money talks ....and :bs: walks....

for me, I think our energies should be spent in perpetuating his legacy and maybe doing it by showing our strong monetary force as fans....letting the MTV's, the media know ....that disrespecting Michael comes with financial consequences from his fans...

we all want to see more his new photos...

So true. A cousin wanted to send me some never before seen photos she'd recently found on the net, and I laughed. I said please send them because I always like looking at Michael, but trust me, it'll just be me looking at them AGAIN.
