[h=1]Children and adults gunned down in Connecticut school massacre[/h]
  • There's been a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut
  • We're told there are 18-20 children who have been killed, with a death toll close to 30
  • Law enforcement tells CNN suspect is named Ryan Lanza
  • Below are the latest updates as they come to us or you can read our story of the Connecticut school shooting
[Updated at 2:47 p.m. ET] President Obama will make a statement on the tragedy at 3:15 p.m. ET. We'll have that live on CNN TV and right here.
[Updated at 2:45 p.m. ET] Various locations are being used as staging areas around Newtown. This is outside the Newtown Methodist Church near the school where a woman is hugging a child.

[Updated at 2:07 p.m. ET] CNN's Jessica Yellin is reporting that we're likely to hear from President Obama today on the school shooting, according to a senior administration official. We don't know when our where we may hear from President Obama.
[Updated at 2:04 p.m. ET] Lisa Procaccini, the parent of an 8-year-old at the school, tells CNN that her daughter said school officials kept her calm during the shooting and told her the loud noise was hammering going on.
Eventually police came in and let her daughter and her teacher leave the school building.
"I'm even kind of numb about what's going on," she told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "I'm in a state of shock. I don't know how Im going to handle having [my daughter] know ... about the whole situation."
[Updated at 1:57 p.m. ET] The death toll is closer to 30 than 20, a federal law enforcement source in Washington told CNN's John King. Most of those killed are children, the source said.
The source also said the suspected gunman, who is dead, had a connection to the school. He would not elaborate on that connection. The source is in touch with authorities on the scene.
[Updated at 1:53 p.m. ET] Congresswoman-elect Elizabeth Esty, who was recently won a seat representing a district that includes Newtown, Connecticut, just released the following statement on the tragedy:
As a mother, I can only begin to imagine what the students, parents, teachers and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary must be experiencing. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by this horrific tragedy. While details are still emerging, I hope for the safety and well being of the children, teachers and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary and for the Newtown community.
[Updated at 1:51 p.m. ET] We have just learned that the suspected shooter is 20-years-old, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation tells CNN’s Susan Candiotti.
[Updated at 1:47 p.m. ET] A few more details from the White House press briefing earlier. White House spokesman Jay Carney said while today is not the day to debate gun policy, an assault weapons ban "does remain a commitment" of President Obama.

[Updated at 1:09 p.m. ET] The police are set to give a news conference soon where we'll learn more. We'll bring that to you as soon as it starts.
[Updated at 1:07 p.m. ET] Here's the chilling account told to CNN's Meredith Artley of what happened at the school.
[Updated at 12:59 p.m. ET] Many people are talking again about gun control. But White House spokesman Jay Carney isn't joining in for now.
"I think it's important on a day like today to view this as I know the president, as a father does and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do, which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event. There is, I'm sure, will be, rather, a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates but I don't think today is that day.
[Updated at 12:57 p.m. ET] From the News Times reporter at the school:

The shooting began about 9:35 a.m., the parent said. There was a "pop pop pop" in the hall outside the room. Three people went out of the room into the hall where the sounds had come from. "Only one person came back," we were told.
The witness told Artley that she then called 911. She said she never saw the shooter but she later was escorted outside the room past two bodies lying in blood.
[Updated at 12:20 p.m. ET] A third-grader describes the shooting to WTNH:
[Updated at 12:16 p.m. ET] Two adults were killed, according to a parent who was at the school during the incident, and who talked to our colleague Meredith Artley.
[Updated at 12:12 p.m. ET] We just got this from U.S. Senator-elect Chris Murphy:
"I am shocked and saddened by the horrific news from Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning, and I pray that kids, teachers, staff, and families reach safety as quickly as possible. While we don't have much information right now, our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones."
[Updated at 12:05 p.m. ET] The shooter's body is in a classroom, a source with knowledge of the investigation tells CNN’s Susan Candiotti.

My Heart goes out for the Lost Children and Adults! :(

Thank you earthlyme for this information. Sending prayers of healing love and comfort to all the victims, their families and all who are impacted by this terrible tragedy. My heart is breaking and the tears keep flowing. :-(

I was horrified to hear this news. I'll never understand how someone could do this. I send prayers to the children who were traumatized and killed, and to their families :angel: It's always upsetting to hear about children being killed because they were innocent. No child should have to experience that. :( I remember reading the story about when MJ visited that one school that had the shooting. Who will comfort these kids? So sad and tragic.

Very upset as the day ends. My heart is heavy. Unbelievable. All my L.O.V.E. soars for those who have lost their loved ones in todays tragedy.

I want to see the MJ estate help some how.

"And so ladies and gentlemen, I conclude my remarks tonight with faith, joy and excitement.

From this day forward, may a new song be heard.

Let that new song be the sound of children laughing.

Let that new song be the sound of children playing.

Let that new song be the sound of children singing.

And let that new song be the sound of parents listening.

Together, let us create a symphony of hearts, marvelling at the miracle of our children and basking in the beauty of love.

Let us heal the world and blight its pain.

And may we all make beautiful music together.

God bless you, and I love you."

I don't even know what to say....I'm feeling sick....I can't believe....All those lives lost....When will this end????

All I can say is.....Why???

:cry:

My heart goes out to the families and friends of the people who died. I do not have kids but if i do one day, i hope i'll never know what it feels like to buy a xmas gift for your kid and not being able to let him/her unwrap it because he/she's dead. Like earthlyme said, things need to change. I hope they will because i reached the point where i'm not that surprised when i hear about a shooting which just took place in the USA.

It's just so awful. I feel so bad for all the families. I will never understand why these things happen.

very sad but i hope the liberals dont exploit this tragedy to push gun control

^I disagree...Are we waiting for another massacre? we had 3 this year already. This does not have anything to do with the Liberals or Conservatives. These are lives of innocent people and I think the Politicians Need to get over their differences and find a solution to these Evil acts. This is not a 1 time act. There have been shootings like these

"Guns dont kill people, People with guns do"...

<header class="entry-header"> Twelve facts about guns and mass shootings in the United States

Posted by Ezra Klein on December 14, 2012 at 2:07 pm

</header>
When we first collected much of this data, it was after the Aurora, Colo. shootings, and the air was thick with calls to avoid &#8220;politicizing&#8221; the tragedy. That is code, essentially, for &#8220;don&#8217;t talk about reforming our gun control laws.&#8221;

Let&#8217;s be clear: That is a form of politicization. When political actors construct a political argument that threatens political consequences if other political actors pursue a certain political outcome, that is, almost by definition, a politicization of the issue. It&#8217;s just a form of politicization favoring those who prefer the status quo to stricter gun control laws.
Since then, there have been more horrible, high-profile shootings. Jovan Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, took his girlfriend&#8217;s life and then his own. In Oregon, Jacob Tyler Roberts entered a mall holding a semi-automatic rifle and yelling &#8220;I am the shooter.&#8221; And, in Connecticut, at least 27 are dead &#8212; including 18 children &#8212; after a man opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

If roads were collapsing all across the United States, killing dozens of drivers, we would surely see that as a moment to talk about what we could do to keep roads from collapsing. If terrorists were detonating bombs in port after port, you can be sure Congress would be working to upgrade the nation&#8217;s security measures. If a plague was ripping through communities, public-health officials would be working feverishly to contain it.

Only with gun violence do we respond to repeated tragedies by saying that mourning is acceptable but discussing how to prevent more tragedies is not. &#8220;Too soon,&#8221; howl supporters of loose gun laws.
But as others have observed, talking about how to stop mass shootings in the aftermath of a string of mass shootings isn&#8217;t &#8220;too soon.&#8221; It&#8217;s much too late.

What follows here isn&#8217;t a policy agenda. It&#8217;s simply a set of facts &#8212; many of which complicate a search for easy answers &#8212; that should inform the discussion that we desperately need to have.

1. Shooting sprees are not rare in the United States.
Mother Jones has tracked and mapped every shooting spree in the last three decades. &#8220;Since 1982, there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii,&#8221; they found. And in most cases, the killers had obtained their weapons legally:

2. Eleven of the 20 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in the United States.
Time has the full list here. In second place is Finland, with two entries.

3. Lots of guns don&#8217;t necessarily mean lots of shootings, as you can see in Israel and Switzerland.*
As David Lamp writes at Cato, &#8220;In Israel and Switzerland, for example, a license to possess guns is available on demand to every law-abiding adult, and guns are easily obtainable in both nations. Both countries also allow widespread carrying of concealed firearms, and yet, admits Dr. Arthur Kellerman, one of the foremost medical advocates of gun control, Switzerland and Israel &#8216;have rates of homicide that are low despite rates of home firearm ownership that are at least as high as those in the United States.&#8217;&#8221;
*Correction: The info is out-of-date, if not completely wrong. Israel and Switzerland have tightened their gun laws substantially, and now pursue an entirely different approach than the United States. More details here. I apologize for the error.

4. Of the 11 deadliest shootings in the US, five have happened from 2007 onward.
That doesn&#8217;t include Friday&#8217;s shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. The AP put the early reported death toll at 27, which would make it the second-deadliest mass shooting in US history.

5. America is an unusually violent country. But we&#8217;re not as violent as we used to be.
Kieran Healy, a sociologist at Duke University, made this graph of &#8220;deaths due to assault&#8221; in the United States and other developed countries. We are a clear outlier.
As Healy writes, &#8220;The most striking features of the data are (1) how much more violent the U.S. is than other OECD countries (except possibly Estonia and Mexico, not shown here), and (2) the degree of change&#8212;and recently, decline&#8212;there has been in the U.S. time series considered by itself.&#8221;

6. The South is the most violent region in the United States.
In a subsequent post, Healy drilled further into the numbers and looked at deaths due to assault in different regions of the country. Just as the United States is a clear outlier in the international context, the South is a clear outlier in the national context:
7. Gun ownership in the United States is declining overall.
&#8220;For all the attention given to America&#8217;s culture of guns, ownership of firearms is at or near all-time lows,&#8221; writes political scientist Patrick Egan. The decline is most evident on the General Social Survey, though it also shows up on polling from Gallup, as you can see on this graph:
The bottom line, Egan writes, is that &#8220;long-term trends suggest that we are in fact currently experiencing a waning culture of guns and violence in the United States. &#8220;

8. More guns tend to mean more homicide.
The Harvard Injury Control Research Center assessed the literature on guns and homicide and found that there&#8217;s substantial evidence that indicates more guns means more murders. This holds true whether you&#8217;re looking at different countries or different states. Citations here.

9. States with stricter gun control laws have fewer deaths from gun-related violence.
Last year, economist Richard Florida dove deep into the correlations between gun deaths and other kinds of social indicators. Some of what he found was, perhaps, unexpected: Higher populations, more stress, more immigrants, and more mental illness were not correlated with more deaths from gun violence. But one thing he found was, perhaps, perfectly predictable: States with tighter gun control laws appear to have fewer gun-related deaths. The disclaimer here is that correlation is not causation. But correlations can be suggestive:

&#8220;The map overlays the map of firearm deaths above with gun control restrictions by state,&#8221; explains Florida. &#8220;It highlights states which have one of three gun control restrictions in place &#8211; assault weapons&#8217; bans, trigger locks, or safe storage requirements. Firearm deaths are significantly lower in states with stricter gun control legislation. Though the sample sizes are small, we find substantial negative correlations between firearm deaths and states that ban assault weapons (-.45), require trigger locks (-.42), and mandate safe storage requirements for guns (-.48).&#8221;

10. Gun control, in general, has not been politically popular.
Since 1990, Gallup has been asking Americans whether they think gun control laws should be stricter. The answer, increasingly, is that they don&#8217;t. &#8220;The percentage in favor of making the laws governing the sale of firearms &#8216;more strict&#8217; fell from 78% in 1990 to 62% in 1995, and 51% in 2007,&#8221; reports Gallup. &#8220;In the most recent reading, Gallup in 2010 found 44% in favor of stricter laws. In fact, in 2009 and again last year, the slight majority said gun laws should either remain the same or be made less strict.&#8221;

11. But particular policies to control guns often are.
An August CNN/ORC poll asked respondents whether they favor or oppose a number of specific policies to restrict gun ownership. And when you drill down to that level, many policies, including banning the manufacture and possession of semi-automatic rifles, are popular.

12. Shootings don&#8217;t tend to substantially affect views on gun control.

That, at least, is what the Pew Research Center found:

Tragic.

I know many Americans like their guns, but I definitely would not like my country to allow just about anyone carry guns. What's the American fascination with violence, guns, anyway?

Excellent post, Earthlyme.

I read this article last night on the Washington Post (I'm in Europe) , everybody should read this.

I understand why so many people want guns, but this is a vicious circle. The more guns there are , the more killings there will be, and more and more people will feel they need guns.
USA is a leading country - that is not at war- in deaths by gunshot wounds. It's not only yesterday's killing at Sandy Hook. I heard today that around 30 persons die this way every day in the US.

They urgently need to ban guns, and find a way for people to give back their guns.

But they also need to think about why this is happening. Why certain people suddenly "explode" so violently. I think that besides the gun laws, the healthcare system, at least mental healthcare, is something to think about. It should be easily available to everyone.

Food for thought in Western Europe, when certain parties want to tear down our social systems.

Very sad news. :( They should ban guns. At least hand guns. I don't see any reason why someone but police officers should have those.

But as others have observed, talking about how to stop mass shootings in the aftermath of a string of mass shootings isn&#8217;t &#8220;too soon.&#8221; It&#8217;s much too late.
It`s s true

It happens in Sweden that someone take drugs or get psychotic etc and hear voices telling them to kill,but they don´t use to have access to firearms.
It´s bad enough they can get a knife and kill, but it´s not so many vicims then.
One of Swedens Foreign Ministers was killed by a sick man.

I wonder what had happened if the killers mother never had acquired weapons.

My opinions are never popular but I think it's much more than just guns, in my country you can easily get guns but we never had such tragedy in schools. I believe a combinations of several variables made this happen.
I definitely think is much more than just the easy ways to get guns.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing on the news yesterday. I just couldn't believe it. :(
But that's true Lucilla. It's more to it than easy access to guns, which are unfortunately falling in
the hands of sick minded individuals. A ban on guns will not eliminate the use of them. Slow it down some but that's all. These killers will always seem to find a way around a ban just like they find ways around every law that they break.

My heart breaks for these kids, their families and all who lost their lives in this senseless crime
of mass murder.

Slowing it down would be still better than nothing.

I just read this at CNN today:

Hong Kong (CNN) -- On Friday morning, a man walked through the entrance of an elementary school and, without warning, began ruthlessly cutting down children at the school. Before he was subdued, nearly two dozen were hit.

While it sounds like the horrific massacre in Connecticut, this attack took place about 8,000 miles away in central China. And while several of the victims were reported in critical condition, none of the 22 children were killed. The 36-year-old suspect in China -- which has strict gun control laws -- attacked the children with a knife, according to local reports.

"The huge difference between this case and the U.S. is not the suspect, nor the situation, but the simple fact he did not have an effective weapon," said Dr. Ding Xueliang, a Harvard-educated sociologist at the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) --

Update: Tiffany Westry is live at St. Vincent's hours after this morning's shootings with how the hospital is dealing with today's event.

Birmingham Police Department Statement: Officer Involved Shooting

The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. Vincent&#8217;s Hospital located at 810 St. Vincent&#8217;s Drive, Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 4:00 a.m., officers from the South Precinct responded to the incident location to investigate a report of a person with a gun. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect on the 5th floor hallway. As officers approached, the suspect began firing a handgun at the officers, striking one officer and two members of the hospital staff. An assisting Birmingham Police officer returned gunfire fatally wounding the suspect. Due to the circumstances at the scene, the victims were transported to a neighboring hospital for treatment. The three victims&#8217; injuries are not life threatening.

The suspect has been identified as:
Jason Letts, W/M, 38, of Jemison, Alabama. The suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper states, &#8220;In light of the recent mass shooting in Connecticut, too many of these incidents end with unimaginable tragedy. I am amazed at the bravery of our officers as they confronted this armed gunman in the hallway. I have absolutely no doubt that their courageous actions at that exact moment saved many lives. All of Birmingham should be proud and appreciative that these are the type of officers that protect our communities every day. The hospital staff and especially the security team should also be commended because they performed with selfless service which contained the incident until the officers' arrival.&#8221;

Chief Roper also states, &#8220;The results of this incident could have been much worse. However; due to several professionals from different walks of life putting the well-being of the patients and staff before themselves we suffered no additional loss of life.&#8221;

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation (A.B.I.) is the lead agency investigating the officer involved shooting. The BPD Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Division are also conducting investigations.

Birmingham police are saying that a gunman entered the St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham early Saturday morning.

We've been able to confirm that one police officer and two hospital employees were injured. Their injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

The gunman was killed by a Birmingham police officer. Officials have not released this person's identity. The shooting took place on the fifth floor around 4am.

Local officials tell CBS42 that the situation is under control.

We have a crew at the scene and will update this story as more information becomes available.

No...guns arent the problem... its ppl. with guns. The more these shootings continue to happen, the more ppl. want guns to defend themselves and some will end up doing what this person did with the gun *legally obtained*. Yes what happened in China is horrible. But if he had a gun, he would've killed all those 22 children. The American Health Policy is messed up and nobody is doing a darn thing to fix it.

Everyone survived. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlin...shed-in-china-elementary-school-knife-attack/ we want our guns or only the bad guys'll have 'em. its our tradition to have em so we can fight back if the gov oppresses us

The difference is: those kids in China aren't dead. Exactly because that crazy person did not have access to guns.

i think the fact that the kids in China aren't dead, is luck. i don't think any attack can be diminished by lucky survival. As we all know, 50 cent got shot eight or nine times, alone, and survived. So, this isn't about surviving the attack.

Something else..

The killer in Conneticut gets flattered in the following article. I saw more flattery for this killer, by the press, in one paragraph, than Michael Jackson got in the entire second half of his life, relatively speaking. The atrocious nature of irresponsible press has to stop. If I didn't see a picture of this killer, I'd think that the press was describing the cat's meow, for women all over the world, aside from the fact that he killed people. This is a pattern. These mixed messages have got to stop, or would-be killers, who probably never hear any flattery in their life, will think they can get a star turn, by killing people. Words are powerful, and the press knows it. Here is that following article:

No, I don't think it's only luck : a gun is way more dangerous than a knife. If that guy in China had had a gun, it would't have been 22 injured kids. If the killer in Connecticut hah had a knife, or even 3 knives, there wouldn't be 27 dead people.

I heard bout the shooting yesterday and i am completely saddened :(

My prayers & thoughts are with the victims & their families , may god bless those sweet little angels in heaven

what i am saying is i am not about lesser evils when it comes to violence. violence is violence, and it is all appalling to me, and it sickens me that we are arguing about methods and weapons used. all these weapons are evil. and use of them to commit evil is evil, period. it's hard for me not to smell the word 'political', when we are arguing about what weapon is used. we don't know what would have happened in what if situations..except there would be a Violent outcome.

What am i supposed to do..go to the child that survived the knife attack and say..'well, at least you weren't a victim of gun violence.'

?

i should be just only saying to that child 'i'm god awful sorry that any violence happened to you at all!'

A victim of a violent attack is a victim of a violent attack.

The Bushmaster .223 rifle is one model AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with a legacy that looks to be growing if CNN reports are correct.

The Cable News Network reports (as of Friday at 4:00 p.m. EDT) that one of the weapons Adam Lanza used to commit the mass shooting in Connecticut is a Bushmaster .223.

From CNN:

Three guns were found at the scene, CNN's Susan Candiotti reports. According to a law enforcement source, the third weapon found on the scene was a .223 Bushmaster. The other weapons, previously reported, are a Glock, and a Sig-Sauer. No word on the models of Glock or Sig-Sauer.

The Bushmaster model was also involved in the 2003 Washington, D.C. sniper shootings where 10 people were killed and two people arrested.

That incident resulted in a lawsuit settlement and eventually Bushmaster's Windham, Maine facility closed in 2010. Owner Dick Dyke started a new rifle manufacturing company called Windham Weaponry Inc. soon afterward.

Bushmaster's parts and gear are still available to purchase online.
