To commemorate Michael's birthday on August 29th, fans from all around the world are making a donation to a charity in honour of Michael. In July, fans will vote on which charity to contribute to. In August, we will donate to the chosen charity. You can vote for your favourite charity from now until July 25th.

Michael Jackson Birthday Charity

I checked on Charity Navigator and Amazon Conservation is 4 star and got positive reviews. It uses 95 percent of money donated to its programs.
I couldn't find MyCharity:Water on the website and Orphan's Lifeline got 3 stars and donates 85 percent to its programs.
I am putting this here because when a charity is decided we as fans need to make sure all possible monies go to the actual program.

How do they know who the donation is dedicated to? I've been doing Make a Wish for the past couple of years (can't believe it's been that long), but I'm starting to doubt that the dedications there are recorded in any way.

Voted. They are all great charities. It was hard to choose!

Hi, I'm the admin of this project. To answer your questions:

The star rating given by Charity Navigator is not based solely on the percentage of donations that goes towards programmes. There are 3 other criteria that are factored into the final score. See: How does Charity Navigator rate charities?

MyCharity: Water has not been rated by Charity Navigator but 100% of your donation goes towards programmes. Administrative costs and even credit card costs have been covered by other private donors, so truly 100% of your donation amount will go towards programmes. We don’t have to worry about how much they spend on admin and other stuff because that is someone else’s money. :)

None of this year’s charities have a space on their donation form where we can specify “In Memory Of”. (We decided to waive this requirement because too many good charities would otherwise be excluded.) The charities that do have this option, what they do is to send a card or email to the next of kin to inform them of your donation. Perhaps some charities don’t provide this option because they don’t have the time to send so many individual emails. Plus sending out cards would be another percentage of your donation going towards administrative expenses. I’m just saying, I don’t know for sure since I don't work at a charity. However, we will work together with the chosen charity to work out a way to keep a tally of how much is collected from MJ fans for this project, and I’m sure they would be happy to oblige us with a letter to Michael’s children later.

Heads up – there’s going to be an auction of a beautiful piece of MJ art for this project, so save up your money (loads of it) or hold a bake sale or get a second job - I promise this will be worth it!!! More details and pics soon (when I get clearance from the artist). Stay tuned!

What a great idea! Michael would definitely love this. He's proud of his fans. Going to vote right now.

This is wonderful, thankyou so much! Now this is the legacy of Michael Jackson. :)

Donations received as of August 10, 2011: US$916.90. :) Only a couple dozen of very generous donors though. Where's the rest of y'all?

Explanation from the charity -

“Charity Navigator now has us listed as a 3-star charity. They are implementing new changes to their site, and the new version will most likely restore our 4-star rating.

As for reasons for the 3-star rating, if you look at our finances, we received four stars for our financial disbursement, but 3 stars for capacity. We used to employ a guy to go to every country to check up on all the homes. As you can imagine, that was quite expensive since he was from the U.S. After ten years of doing what we did, we decided that we have built great relationships with the directors in each country, so we hired childcare coordinators in place of one man. Because of standards of living, it reduced our costs significantly. We can employ 5 additional coordinators for half of the price of one man from the US!

Anyways, when doing so, it lowered our program expense growth, which according to Charity Navigator, must be no less that 6.7%. We grew like 4.7%. So there is a penalty. Secondly, they wish for you to have at least 1 year’s worth of additional operating expenses on hand, which means that they would like us to basically not spend a dime and put away 1.6 million dollars, which when you are responsible for providing food for 20,000 orphans, is really not possible. So we got docked a star until September, when they issue updated ratings under the new system. The way we spend our money is up to their standards, but they also feel they should be able to set standards on how much we grow, which is not in our control, but in the control of generous people like you.”

There is also a beautiful piece of art up for raffle:

Fans Commemorate Michael Jackson's Birthday with Donation to Charity

Michael Jackson fans around the world are coming together to donate to a charity to commemorate Michael’s birthday on August 29th, 2011. He would have been 53.

Michael was known not only for his music, but also for his philanthropy. In his lifetime, he donated more than US$300 million to charities around the world. Many more gifts were private and unrecorded. He holds the record for “Most Charities Supported by a Pop Star” in the Guinness Book of Records, which remains unbeaten to this day.

One of the causes closest to his heart was orphanages. While on tour, Michael would visit a hospital or an orphanage at every city that he stopped at, leaving a large donation or toys and equipment for the children at every orphanage.

Kenny Ortega, director of ‘This Is It’, said of Michael: “He had the biggest heart of anybody and really, really did care about improving the human condition, especially for children, and that was part of his mission. While he was on tour, he always wanted to know what he could do in each place, so that when he left, he left a place better, having been there.”

Michael always considered it his mission to improve the plight of the children of the world, and his fans are now carrying on that tradition in his memory, to continue the work that he started and to honour him for the humanitarian that he was.

In July, fans voted on the charity to donate to. The chosen charity for this year is Orphan’s Lifeline of Hope International.

Orphan’s Lifeline is based in the USA and supports 20,000 orphaned and abandoned children in Russia, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Kenya, Mexico and Haiti. They are also just starting to work in Sri Lanka.

Their first aim is to provide orphan children with their primary need - shelter, food, medical care, love and nurturing. After the children’s basic needs are met, they are then given a good primary education. Wherever possible, the children are also taught agriculture, animal husbandry, sewing, baking, woodworking and metal working to equip them with additional skills to make the home and community more self-sufficient. When the children are older, they then proceed to higher education or vocational training, or enter the workforce based on their individual abilities and achievements.

Before Orphan’s Lifeline started working with the orphanages that they now help, the children were leaving the orphanages at the ages of 15 to 17 and ending up back on the streets, where they became involved in crime, prostitution or gang activities. Many died within a couple of years due to starvation or because they had been murdered. Now the children in their homes are finishing high school and going on to college or trade school, and the circle of abandonment and poverty is being ended in their lives. Some of the children they began helping more than 10 years ago are now studying to become doctors, nurses, teachers, social workers and government workers.

Less crime, better economies and healthy young adults contributing rather than detracting from the world society means that the programmes are literally changing the world, one child at a time.
