Can artists buy their own singles/albums in bulk?

Pretty random question but why don't artists buy their own singles/albums to make them reach #1?

Couldn't MJ, for example, have bought his single 'Butterflies' - which reached an impressive #2 on the R&B and #14 on the US singles charts - in bulk? He would've made the money back through sales and royalties.

It might be dishonest but it would still be legal, right? :cheeky:

Artists probably could looking at it from the business end. However, with regards to the charts the Artists creations would be moot to that Man In The Mirror...

I guess it would depend whether or not they are all about the money or all about their children...
 
Maybe they don't actually care about getting to number one? (just a thought lol..)
 
you would be in trouble if that happened. theres been investigations in the uk about such things when there was bulk buying that looked suspicious
 
You don't think labels have done this in the past (and maybe still today)? I wouldn't call it rumor or even fact, but it's something that I always assumed was implied and never denied.
