Basically i find it hard to explain which parts are Michael and which parts are James Porte so here:

I don't think you got it all right... the first two stanzas in 2nd verse sound really different than those in first verse to me, and the rest of the 2nd verse... might just be me.
 
It's easy and simple. Michael is singing the lead, and when you hear someone singing with him? That's James. Michael's voice is more prominent.
 
I think I agree with ur explanation. People were expecting ONLY MICHAEL to sing all the parts. $ony and/or the Estate made a mistake by not saying anything about another person(James) sinning parts of BN, so when the song came out and it didnt sound like Mike in some parts people started to say it aint' mike cuz the whole song is not his vocals.

I don't know, maybe Micheal didn't want it, maybe want - we can't be sure about it. But in Invincible booklet there are special thanks to ... James Porto - is he James Porte or it is only similar name?
