June 29, 2010 | 4:16 pm

Larry King, whose nightly CNN talk show was long a required stomping ground for striving politicians and contrite celebrities, announced Tuesday that he is going to step down from the program in the fall.
The 76-year-old will not be leaving CNN altogether: He signed a new contract to host quarterly specials on the cable news channel.
But his departure from prime time marks a major turning point for CNN, which has built its schedule around "Larry King Live" for 25 of the network’s 30 years on the air. This year, however, the program has seen a sharp fall-off in audience. An average of 677,000 viewers tuned in during the second quarter of 2010, down 37% from the same period last year, according to Nielsen.
In a nod to how much the medium has changed since King began broadcasting in 1957, he broke the news himself on Twitter, writing: “Announcing tonight: I’m ending my nightly show this fall but continuing at CNN. http://bit.ly/9hBv9.”
King has long called himself an interviewer, not a journalist, logging more than 40,000 sit-downs with newsmakers since he began broadcasting in 1957, according to CNN.
It remains unclear who will replace him. CNN has not confirmed recent reports that it is in talks with Piers Morgan, a British journalist who judges NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” CBS anchor Katie Couric’s name has been frequently floated as a possible successor, and King himself has volunteered that he thinks “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest would be a worthy contender.
The end of King’s nightly show comes as CNN is working to refashion its low-rated prime-time schedule. Last week, the network announced a new roundtable show hosted by former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and conservative columnist Kathleen Parker will debut in the 8 p.m. ET time slot this fall, replacing the newscast anchored Campbell Brown. The hiring of Spitzer, who resigned from office after revelations that he solicited prostitutes, disappointed many CNN employees and drew external criticism that the network was abandoning its news mission.
King explained in a CNN.com statement, which he linked on his Twitter page, that he asked his network to let him "hang up his suspenders."
"Twenty-five years ago, I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of Larry King Live. Now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games."

I'm sad I really like the show even though Larry is annoying, I hope they will get someone else to host it even if they have to change the name of it.

I kind of had a feeling this was coming (even before the problems with his wife surfaced). I'm sad about it. Yeah, Larry's interviewing style can be annoying but he still makes for a good interview.

Yeah i swear we found out a few days ago and they're gonna get peirs morgan to replace him

Really? Peirs Morgan? I always thought they should have tapped him to replace Simon Cowell on American Idol.

And I always suspected that CNN would have Joy Bahar (sorry!) replace Larry King eventually. Her show is on opposite his in the same time slot on HLN (a CNN network). I bet that's no coincidence. Again, sorry. LOL

Hmmm I do like Larry ,it is too bad that he is leaving, but he is getting up there in age after all...He could probably go longer but he did say in a video yesterday that he wanted spend more time with family, which is completely understandable.

It will be interesting to see who replaces him.

I think this is a good idea. I have noticed that the show has not been as good as it used to be. Larry seems to have the same 5 or 6 people on over & over and he doesn't seem to be prepared as he could/should be.

Nuuuuu!!!! -sobs- Goodbye nightly CNN routine...

Who am I supposed to watch now before Anderson Cooper starts?! :(

I loved Larry and his show. Sure, he sometimes asked incredibly stupid questions, but even still, he was basically the best one out there. It's so sad to see him go. Oh well, he was in his late 70's, so this couldn't have gone on much longer anyway...

It's such a shame to see him go, though.

Larry was pushed. CNN allowed LARRY to save face. For months CNN was out there looking for LARRY'S replacement due to tanking ratings.

Gonna miss Larry's Brooklyn accent. They should replace him with someone else with a Brooklyn accent so the transition won't be so hard for me, lol.

Aww I love Anderson Cooper. Watch him almost every night. I met him once too.

Extremely disappointed with his coverage of MJ,S passing. Revealed himself to be no better than the typical tabloid reporter. Did zero research on MJ, just regurgitated the tabloid crap. Dragged in clueless people off the streets to dissect MJ.

Put that publicity seeking nurse ( forgetting her name) on the show and was shameless to admit he can't confirm what she was about to say or the fact she even knows MJ. He grabbed for cheap ratings, damn the facts. Viewers tuned in for the MJ coverage, but he did not give them a reason to stay.

^^ He TRIED to get us Thome, but Thome ditched the media.

And he did get us Jermaine, and all the Jackson brothers except one.

Yeah, he didn't investigate. But it's more like just a talk show, and plus, he's not young.

You may be right but I have a feeling that Anderson prefers to focus his coverage on major disasters. I'll never forget his live reporting from that horrible coal mining tragedy a few years ago. Or his coverage of 9/11. His Hurricane Katrina coverage from New Orleans was incredible. And the images of him physically picking up and carrying a young Haiti boy after the quakes to get him out of harm's way cannot be denied. Downright heroic and above and beyond his job description.

Right now he's concentrating his reporting on the BP oil spill and he's right there in the trenches.

Plus, Anderson has a great sense of humor. I love watching him when he subs for Regis on Live with Regis & Kelly. He's very funny. By the way, he has spoken about Meeting MJ back in the 70's.

He does excellent work with serious news. He out works the competition. That's why i was disappointed with his shoddy MJ coverage.
