Actor Pernell Roberts, known for portraying Adam Cartwright, the oldest son on "Bonanza" (1959-1965), has died.

According to his attorney, he died at his Malibu, Calif., home Sunday at age 81.

He also played chief surgeon, Dr. John MacIntyre, the title character on "Trapper John, M.D." (1979-1986).

Roberts was also known for his activism, which included participation in the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 and pressuring NBC to refrain from hiring whites to portray minority characters.

Roberts, a native of Waycross, Ga., spent much of his adult life "pursuing his dream of equality for all," according to a family statement released by his lawyer, Richard Stone.

"On the set of 'Bonanza,' he protested the use of all white crews and guest stars, finding some support but never enough to satisfy his sense of outrage," the statement said.

Roberts left the popular western after the end of the sixth season in 1965, although "Bonanza" stayed in production for another eight years. The storyline kept open the possibility of his return to the Ponderosa ranch. But Roberts never returned. :(

I loved him on Bonanza. I love that TV show. He is the last of the main charaters to die.

My husband LOVES Bonanza and watches it everyday here. My mom watches it too. I just read your post to my husband, and we were wondering about Lorne Greene. Thanks for stating that Mr. Roberts was the last one to pass. It answered our question.

I loved Michael Landon on that show too. Though I loved him more as Charles Ingalls on Little House On The Prairie.

Yeah I loved it too even though I only discovered it about 5 years ago. I loved all of the sons as each was different and had their own ways. Lorne greene died at the end of the 80's. What a wonderful show!

I used to watch Bonanza and Trapper John. But I didn't realize that he was still alive, I thought Mr. Roberts died long ago.
