Norman Winter, Music Publicist for Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Dr. Dre and MCA/Universal Records, Dies

Norman Winter, who in his long Hollywood career as a music publicist represented Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Janet Jackson, Garth Brooks, Paul Anka and many others, died Thursday in Las Vegas due to complications from Lewy Body disease, according to Allied Artists Film & Music Groups.

His age wasn’t revealed, at the family’s request, but Winters was said to have been in his 80s.

Winters served as head of publicity for MCA/Universal Records before leaving to form his own public relations company, Norman Winter Associates.

Among the artists he helped was Jackson, who Winters represented at the time of the blockbuster "Thriller" album.

Winter also worked on Jackson’s Victory Tour, his acquisition of the Beatles song catalog and his Pepsi endorsements.

Jackson's longtime attorney and an executor of his estate, John Branca, said: "We are so sad to hear of the passing of our dear friend Norman Winter. Norman was a unique, one of a kind character who was dearly beloved. He was of great help and service to Michael and our team during the 'Thriller' period."

Winter’s lengthy client list included Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Janet Jackson, Queen, Rick James, Barry White, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Who, AC/DC, Steppenwolf, Meatloaf, Johnny Rivers, the Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin, Christopher Cross, Bobby Ross Avila, Donny Osmond, Garth Brooks, Herb Alpert, Paul Anka, Phil Ramone, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Bootsy Collins, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Brian McKnight, Outkast, Usher, Jimmy Cliff, Steve Martin, Joan Collins, Arsenio Hall, Morris Day and gospel luminaries Jennifer Knapp and Deniece Williams.

Winter was also influential in the world of rap, working with such artists as the late Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Babyface and Bangin' On Wax (the Bloods & Crips collaboration), Domino, Bone Thugs - N - Harmony and Eddie Griffin.

Among Latin artists, Winter worked with Emmanuel, Lucia Mendez, Chichi Peralta, Renegade, Luis Cardenas and the Golden Eagle Awards, among others.

His corporate clients included Virgin Records (Noo Trybe), Ruthless Records, 3M, The Lincoln Mint, The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), ASCAP and BMI.

Russ Regan, former president of UNI Records, said, "Norman Winter belongs in the Press Agent's Hall of Fame, because there was nobody better. He helped me make four superstars; Elton John, Neil Diamond, Barry White and Olivia Newton-John. I loved him with all my heart."

Former Los Angeles Times music editor Robert Hilburn said, "Norm Winter was unorthodox by public relations standards--schooled in the 'anything goes' tradition of old-time showbiz PR rather than the more disciplined rules of journalism. Once he was on your side, however, he stopped at nothing to make sure the world heard and cared about you."

Winter is survived by his wife of 45 years Joy, daughters Jennifer and Elizabeth and brother Alfred. Funeral arrangements are pending.

R.I.P Norman Winter ~ Norman spearheaded several special projects on behalf of Michael, with whom he would develop a long term relationship. Although [Michael's] initial solo disc Off the Wall went multiple platinum, the artist justifiably felt that he was not gaining appropriate publicity saturation. Yetnikoff assigned Winter to the task. The association prospered and evolved into a long-term arrangement highlighted by Thriller. The legendary Victory Tour, Jackson's acquisition of the Beatles' catalog and his lucrative Pepsi endorsement were other milestones during that period.

Norman Winter explained why Michael likes to spend time with children, “He likes to be with kids more than adults because he feels comfortable, he can relax. He feels their not gonna hustle him.”

Pic 2. Norman joined Michael at the White House, where Ronald Reagan honored the star for allowing "Beat It" to be performed on a public-service TV spot against drunk driving. Coordinating media, Norman also wrote text for the President's speech.

Pic 3. Norman's reply from Mag 'Rolling Stone' after asking why Michael is not featured on the cover of the mag. Letter dated Nov 27th 1979 ~ Letter reads ~ Dear Norman," Michael Jackson, has indeed, been on the cover of ROLLING STONE contrary to your statement in your recent letter to me. We would very much like to do a major piece on Michael Jackson, but feel it is not a cover story." signed by the Editor and Publisher.

Pic 4 ~ After a 'Victory Tour' concert in Dallas, Norman takes Michael to a 'warm suite' where he meets Elton John and his crew, who have played in a separate venue, and they 'reveled til dawn'. Pic includes Bill Bray, managers John Reid and Frank Delio and Eltons drummer Nigel Olsson. Norman introduced Elton to the USA.

enter Wally's World...and MJ, too
Norm was retained by CBS Records Group (Columbia, Epic) for some six years, reporting exclusively to then-chairman Walter Yetnikoff. A close confidant to the industry's 'king of the grooves,' Winter spearheaded special projects on behalf of major artists, including Michael Jackson, with whom he would develop a long term relationship. Although Jackson's initial solo disc Off the Wall went multiple platinum, the artist justifiably felt that he was not gaining appropriate publicity saturation. Yetnikoff assigned Winter to the task. The association prospered and evolved into a long-term arrangement (with Jackson picking up the tab), highlighted by Thriller, dubbed by The Guinness Book Of World Recordsas the biggest-selling album in history! The legendary Victory Tour, Jackson's acquisition of the Beatles' catalog and his lucrative Pepsi endorsement were other milestones during that period. Norm joined Michael at the White House, where Ronald Reagan honored the star for allowing "Beat It" to be performed on a public-service TV spot against drunk driving. Coordinating media, Norm also wrote text for the President's speech. The event marked the first time that MTV News had gained press credentials to attend a Rose Garden reception. The music station's John Sykes (now chairman of VH1) strongly recalls their warm welcome. When Yetnikoff broached the idea of selling CBS Records Division to Sony Corp., Norman attended Hawaiian confabs between Yetnikoff and Norio Ohga, firm's President's/CEO, that ultimately brought about the CBS Group's acquisition by the Japanese.
