Best of Joy - Original Version

I wonder if the 2008 demo sounds somewhat similar to Ne-Yo's Because Of You, the vibe of the song sounds really similar to The Toy, it's like a modern version of it.
Something a bit unrelated lol, but I cannot stand those mid to late 00s drum snare samples that were so pervasive in music, especially rap and Rnb songs, during that time period. It’s this clap mixed with fingersnaps that I find so grating.

The instruments are similar; the violin, the piano, the drum loop. Which is why I say it's like a modernized version of The Toy. I wonder if at least the drums on the 2008 demo are somewhat similar to the ones on Because Of You, the drums on The Toy don't match the vocals on BoJ so it probably isn't the same.
I could imagine the Toy eventually sounding like this, and with Neff-U aboard sure. But as it is, I'm pretty sure the Best of Joy 2008 is just The Toy 1982, the same.

That would be interesting though, if MJ always heard Ne-Yo type music hearing that, if he visualized that in the 80s. MJ was very progressive with R&B basically, Who Do You Know also does sound like a 90s R&B track already.

I’ve been told that the “Best of Joy” demos are the exact same as “The Toy.” One person said it sounded like MJ just re-recorded his vocals over the 1981 instrumental.

Going by what Michael Prince said and if you hear the the faint instrumental on the leaked acapella, the 2008 demo must have the same concept as the 1981 demo but I don't know, if you listen to the fan-made mixes of the BoJ acapella with The Toy's instrumental they don't fit properly. I believe that maybe the instrumental on the 2008 version has some differences, even if minimal. On the other hand by what Damien has said, the 1991 demo is the exact same as The Toy down to vocals, instrumentals and everything, the only difference being the opening line.

Reworking the song decades later, it must've had a very special meaning to him. Maybe the movie inspired him for Neverland:

Does anyone know if there's a handwritten "third verse" sheet around?
How many BOJ handwritten lyrics have you all seen?

There is no third verse sheet, but there are like 3 handwritten notes by MJ available online, and some of them have different lyrics from each other.
