Based on conversations with industry insiders as well as the apparent schedule for INCEPTION (preproduction, shooting, and postproduction), it’s starting to look like BATMAN 3 is going to end up being a Summer 2012 release.

Firstly, let’s take a quick look at a little Nolan history.

We know now that the script for THE DARK KNIGHT was finished before the end of 2005 -- about a half a year after BATMAN BEGINS was in theaters. Nolan worked on THE PRESTIGE during the latter part of 2005 on into 2006, with the film ultimately being released in October 2006. In July of 2006 while the director was still working on THE PRESTIGE, Warner Bros. officially announced that Chris would helm TDK, it would be released in the Summer of 2008, and that Heath Ledger had been cast as The Joker. Once THE PRESTIGE hit theaters in Fall of ‘06, there was then a six month gap before filming began on TDK.

Right now, INCEPTION is in preproduction. From what I’ve heard through the grapevine, filming will take place from mid-2009 and finish late in the year. Nolan and co. will most likely be involved with post for most of the first half of 2010, readying the film for it’s mid-July release.
It looks as if there will be no way that BATMAN 3 can go through pre, filming, and post during the second half of 2010 and the first part of 2011 and be ready for a Summer ‘11 release.

Doing the math, the timeframe between THE DARK KNIGHT to INCEPTION is nine months later than it was between BATMAN BEGINS to THE PRESTIGE -- that’s nearly a year folks. Thus it appears that BATMAN 3 will come four years after TDK.

I know a four year gap is a bummer, but cheer up -- at least we know a Nolan-directed BATMAN 3 is coming!

(And that’s more than we could say back in ‘97 after BATMAN AND ROBIN.)

Wish to see new Batman, but I think they shouldn't call it "Batman 3". It would be unfair toward the older ones which are also very good. Especially the one with Jack Nicolson as Joker and with the Penguin.

Its funny how many people were saying that on Jack Nicholson can play Joker and they wont accept anything else and now everyone loves Heaths portrayal to the point that Heath won an Oscar for his performance. Cant say that about Jacks interpretation of Joker. Thats not to say Jack isnt an excellent actor.

heath ledger was the only one to play the joker how it was supposed to be played
no he wasn't, Nicholsons captured some of the qualities of the character that Heath didn't, or not in the way Jack did anyway, I personally think the 2nd film is the most overhyped I've ever seen

thats ur choice chaos as we all have different opinions no hard feelins some ppl prefer jacks version to heaths version and the other way round
is it really a choice? do people really choose what they feel? what do you think?

There are so many different versions of Joker in comics and animated movies out there so naturally there will be different version of live action Jokers as well and Jack and Heath each brought a certain element of the Joker to the table. Its just a matter of each to their own in which one you preferred. They both were excellent in the connotation of their particular film.

to be honest i dont care im passed caring

Both Jack and Heath captured elements of the comic book version, but still, neither one was exact to the comic portrayle. Heath's version captured the character's darkness better, the factor of how dangerous he is, but also was portrayed as ragged and unconcerned with apperances, whereas in the comics the Joker is very vain, which Nicholson's version better portrayed. But Nicholson's also was somewhat of a mob boss, which the character of the Joker is not. The Joker is so scary because he has no real motive other then to show that life is nothing but a joke. And Heath's portrayle better captured that. They were both excellent, just very different, and each had elements of the comic version, but neither was exact. It's going to be hard to replace Heath as the Joker. But you also have to take in to consideration that the Joker is Batman's biggest and most popular villian and they can't just ignore him in future films. They'll concentrate on other villians in the immediate future, since there's such an array of villians to choose from in the Batman universe. But eventually, they'll probably revisit the Joker since he's such a main character. They'll have to find someone else. Maybe when they do, they'll stick to him being chemically altered to look as he does instead of wearing make-up. You would probabaly have to have a different director then Chris Nolan then though.

I agree, but I don't see the joker coming back while Nolan is producing the movies though

Joker who is Batmans arch nemesis and still being alive in Nolans universe will either have a cameo or at best a mention in B3. Something probably less along the lines of Scarecrow in TDK. This is what is being mentioned right now but we're ALONG way off from know the truth.

I have yet to see TDK..but from the scenes and clips I have seen off TV, Heath's performance was excellent. I can't wait to see it.

I thought Jack did a GREAT job as The Joker. Tim Burton made the correct choice of getting him to do it. While his version of the Joker wasn't the really violent type like Heath's version, it captured the silliness and wacky version of Joker to a T.

Both were great in their own right.

I think when Batman "3" comes, they will give it a title like Batman Begins or TDK.

As far as who will be the next villians...I hope it's The Riddler, Penguin and maybe Catwomen.

Hey maybe Jim Carey will do Riddler again? :D For Penguin I think Nathan Lane would be fitting. As far as Catwomen.......I would love to see an up and rising starlett take the role..or someone who's been around a few years.....Anne Hathaway comes to mind....I would love to see her in that tight cat suit......MEOW! ;)

I agree with you.

Look, at the end of the day "Batman Begins" is a much more epic tale and movie than TDK was.
I was shocked to see how many people there was that didn't see Batman Begins before they saw TDK.

You know that I am honest when I say that I really didn't like TDK.
I've watched it now at least 3-4 times and I still don't get "attached" to it.

As far as for The Joker, I actually think they made him too nice, and that isn't necessarily Heath Ledgers fault, but more of an issue to keep the movie as child friendly as possibly to have a lower age limit.
I can promise you that somewhere in Chris Nolan's archive there a camera angle straight in front where you can see Heath Ledger cut that man's chin, but they choose to keep a more "friendly" angle for the release.
And some scenes in that movie was just so "childish", it felt so wrong having some childish moments in it when it overall is a very dark movie.

I know that me personally, I would've been more scared being trapped in a elevator with Jack Nicholson's "Joker" than Heath Ledger's.

But HOWEVER, I must say that TDK really feels that it's taking place in current time, like that movie might as well been a news broadcast of some weird shit that is happening right now. We live in a really dark world and that movie captures it excellently.

But as far as over hyped, I totally agree with you. I just can't understand how TDK can be placed before Batman Begins in the IMDB TOPLIST.
Batman Begins is an epic movie in the vein of "The Last Samurai", TDK is IMO "just" a very well made action movie.

(Please note that I had great expectations for TDK since I followed the process of that movie for 2 years before it came out. I might have expected too much.)
