Just a quick article extract for UK fans of BBC TV programme 'The Choir'.
I think the 'choirmaster' and presenter Gareth Malone always does a wonderful job with these amateur choirs. I would have loved to see the Bankers choir performing 'Man in the Mirror' live in London's Canada Square.

Gareth's gang of bank warblers

Staff from Global bank Citi are hoping to debunk the stereotype of rogue traders and reckeless hedge fund managers after signing up to the new series of The Choir: Sing while You Work.

They are among volunteers from five organisations that will be put through their paces by choirmaster Gareth Malone in an effort to be named best workplace choir.

For James Bardrick and his colleagues, the show has been a chance to lift the mood after a turbulent period for the bank, which in 2009 was forced to take a $45 billion bailout from the US government after incurring massive losses on subprime loans.

'The organisation and the whole industry has been through a fairly torrid time which has been difficult, distracting and painful for all sorts of people' said Bardrick, co-head of banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. 'We thought this opportunity would be good for morale and bring people together and it has gone down an absolute storm'.

With 11 nationalities and an array of positions, inclding Head of Private Banking, a trader, a security guard and a cleaner, the group is the most diverse of any of the previous choir programmes.

In the first episode of the show to be broadcast on BBC2 (UK) in November, the choir performs the Michael Jackson hit 'Man in the Mirror' in Canary Wharf's Canada Square.

'It's all about change' says Malone, the programmes presenter, whose series on military wives was so successful it helped the group secure a Christmas No 1 in 2011. ...He said he felt the bankers had the toughest job when it came to currying favour with viewers. 'With Man in the Mirror it's about going through that process of introspection and reflection. We have an apologetic tone, which is not what we are used to from Bankers.' Malone said when working with the choir he felt a 'real sense of them wanting to do something that was not about profit'.
