Is it me or is there really a big difference? The only difference I can see is that in the Speed Demon image Michael has more hair.

But yeah its more to do with the hair i think, even in the BAD era mike with 'short hair' looks like Thriller era Mike.

Bad video recorded in December 1986

Speed Demon press escape recorded on January 1988 and Spyke Dance in May 1988.
 
Michael filmed an alternate version to the BAD short film, first being shot in November of 1986! The reason he looks different is because he is younger, plus it's a side-view and his lupus appears stronger.
 
in Speed Demon his cheekbones and his chin are more visible, maybe he lost weight in 1988?

He did look like he add a bit of extra weight to him in the BAD video compared to his later one's in the BAD era
