Today none other than AXL ROSE is turning the beautiful age of 50. What better day to celebrate the man's work and life? Goes without sayin' this is an appreciation thread so anyone willing to have a positive contribution to the thread is welcome. The same cannot be said about shaddy comments and observations.

I've always loved Guns' music and here is a selection of some of my favorite songs from them:

Sweet child o' mine Verrrry, very special tune 4 me and that guitar work from Slash takes you some of the highest highs possible. I was literally a child when this song came out (6) and had no idea who they were, but now i'm all grown up and ever since i've been exposed to theirs and all the other great music out there i haven't looked back :D

Paradise city

Civil war - very powerful lyrics. I love it when artists have the guts to stand up and talk truth to power. Like one of the comments on utube went - what is so civil about war?

Knockin' on heaven's door - a classic in every sense of the word – both the song and the performance

And last but not least my favorite GnR song of all time and the epic video which went with it.... November rain.

Axl turning 50 reminded me of the summer of 2008 when Madonna, Prince and Michael all turned that same age. I really don't mean to take this o/t cause today is about Axl, but here is a funny thing i found waaay back then :D

And here is a snippet of an article from March 2009 about Michael's sold out tickets for the This is it show.

"This Time Around" though, Jackson isn't performing 7 times at Wembley... but is expected to put on 50 shows at London's newest venue, The O2, which has previously hosted the come back performances of many big names, includes shows by his long term rivals: Prince and Madonna. (Amazingly: Prince, Michael and Madonna all celebrated their 50th birthdays last year -- they were all born in the summer of 1958).

It is soooo very strange to stumble upon these things four years later and realize how much everybody's life has changed and how the world isn't truly the same since Michael's been gone.

That is why i believe it is desperately important to appreciate the talents before our eyes and ears while we have them in front of us. Humanity cannot afford too many Vincent Van Goghs, we really can't or else the Lord above will ask from all of us what have we done with the treasures He gave us.

I know Axl has been criticized more than once and part of the Chinese Democracy tour has been plagued with problems, but i truly wish people would have a lot more consideration for artists, especially when the public feels the need to vent and demonstrate its anger – either because someone is a bit late on stage cause of the weather or they don't agree with the artist's opinions or any other cause.

Music audiences and people in general fail to forget that artists are human beings first and foremost and they are merely kind enough to share their gifts with the world. Not only those working in government, but also artists are involved in public service. That's why we should be grateful to them for all the joy they bring and offer them understanding and caring in their moments of turbulence and darkness.

What follows could be considered corny i suppose, but i'd like to share a lil' poem i found on prince.org back in 2008 and which i wrote in a greeting to card to Michael that August. If he got so upset about folks wearin' Prince t-shirts (was it not?) in Moonwalker, can you imagine how furious he would've become had he known my wishes were merely recycled stuff from a Prince message board ? :p And if he were here i don't even dare imagine what he would think now when i'm a repeat offender of sorts, considerin' what Axl said in 1992 at the VMAs lol.

Your presence is requested
At a moment of transcendence
The mystery of 50 years
Requires your attendance.
We will accomplish something more
Than managing to dine
We'll mark the turning of a soul
From juice to great red wine.

The poem itself is from Nicholas Gordon who apparently writes very nice and extremely convenient in these ACTA threatened days...free poems http://www.poemsforfree.com/me.html I still have the lil' draft with the above lines i tried out for my card for Michael. In my letter to him, which accompanied the card i did use my own words, but those are between me and him :cheeky: j/k of course

Returning to Axl's birthday - i honestly wish him the best and in the name of all GnR fans out there i dare give him the suggestion to try and fix up that cut he's been havin' with Slash for decades. They both are grown arse men with probably some serious issues between themselves and i'm nobody to be givin' anyone advice, let alone to them about a problem which does not concern me.

I'm only tryin' to say that life is too short to be spent on grudges and to remind them the music which they created together makes up of the most impressive pages of rock History. Even if they never record another song together or reunite on stage cause perhaps the window of opportunity for all that magic has been closed, maybe at least their friendship can be rekindled. In any case.....i wish all of them guys well.

Happy birthday Axl!!! Rock on man....

Imma end this one on a 'mushy' tone about birthdays (in general) and men's inate incapacity to express their feelings (in particular). The author is Mr. Gordon again :)

Birthdays are an annual excuse,
A way of saying things we ought to say.
Relatively few can sing their love
Unless they do it on some special day.
Hearts are shy, and words of little use.
But now I want to tell you that I love you,
Open up my heart and say the things
Siblings seldom say to one another
'Cause of the embarrassment it brings.
However long we live, I'll be with you.

The man was quite an a** at certain times but he was very talented and still is very talented. A true rock legend with a great voice that along side with the original GNR have their names up there next to Freddie Mercury and Queen, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, ACDC and Pink Floyd.

Happy 50th birthday Axl, you talented s.o.b.! :D

Here's a classic one, one of my personal favorites actually. The year is '92, one year after Freddie Mercury's passing, Axl Rose singing with the remaining Queen members at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert. What better singer to perform WWRY and the last part of Bohemian Rhapsody if not Axl Rose.

For some reason this performance always gives me goosebumps. :p

I'm a huge Axl Rose fan..Guns N' Roses from 87'-93' is the greatest band ever. To me, those 7 great years put them above The Beatles/Rolling Stones ect in greatness. Even though I feel that way I can't help but feel the original lineup could have been so much bigger if they stayed together, IMO that is one of the biggest wasted potential of any band in history..I'm not the biggest fan of the 2001-today lineup, but I'd still take them over all of today's current bands ;)

Happy Birthday Axl! :punk:
