Anyone else here keep an aquarium be it salt or fresh water? I keep two salt water aquariums. I never thought I'd be the type to get so in to something such as fish, but they fascinate me and are so incredibly relaxing to watch.

Here's a pic of my newest fish friend. Got him yesterday!:

And here are some of my other fishies and critters inhabiting the tank:

P.S. Sorry about the picture quality. It's hard to capture fish in motion!

Wonderful pictures! :wild: Hey, in the penultimate picture, what animal is that? Crab? Your aquarium is amazing :wild:, how many fish and others aquatic animals you have there?

Very beautiful shots, Travis! It is difficult to have something aquatic hold still for a snapshot, so many compliments regarding the quality of the photos. With that said, I'm considering maybe getting a fish if I do end up moving back to campus next year, or the year after that. My only fear is having it die shortly after getting it--I really can't be expected to deal with that too well. My brother did have a beta fish a few years ago, which lasted about 3.5 years, so that's hopeful, but he has an extraordinary knack for and love for animals, which I really can't claim to have, since I'm oblivious to my surroundings most of the time and really have no talent for taking care of living things. Vincent (my lucky bamboo plant/Victorian gentleman) lives on only because his kind is virtually impossible to kill.

In any case, it seems you've made quite an underwater paradise for these cute little fish! I'm sure they're all very happy to keep you company as well. Aquariums can really liven up a home and increase the aesthetic appeal of a room. =)

That's indeed a crab. I have a few different species of crab and snails. I have around 8 actual fish of varying species. I don't plan on getting any more actual fish. Maybe more inverts. Dunno. It's important to keep their environment balanced or else you can have a biological crash. It all sounds more difficult than it really is. It just takes some patience but is so rewarding.

P.S. Marquis de Sade, if you want to start an aquarium then go for it! I'm sure you would be a great tank owner. It only takes a little bit of love. Go to a local aquarium and ask for help to get started. You can also research online. Google has been my best friend when it comes to my fish. Starting up a saltwater aquarium can be tricky at first, but once you get it established it's rather easy to maintain. You mainly just have to do a partial water change every so often. I do one every two weeks.

WOW! How beautiful! My mom used to keep a saltwater aquarium when I was little...She was quite passionate about it..We had a lion fish, I remember that...Plus all sorts of other gorgeous tropical fish - clown fish, tangs, anemones...And so relaxing to watch...I loved it...I wouldn't mind doing it myself, but it's just way too much work, which is why my mom stopped doing it..she had like a 100 gallon tank or something...

Great pics! :D

Thanks for sharing. Lion fish are really beautiful. Just wanted to correct something though... The fish you mentioned are all marine fish, not tropical. No biggie, just a common misconception. Marine fish come from the ocean while tropical fish come from warmer inland bodies of water such as rivers and lakes (freshwater). :)

I'll look into it as soon as I know whether or not I'm going to live on campus next school year. I definitely won't be able to keep it if I live at my mother's Haus because my brother's cat will probably tinker with it (he already messes around with my brother's turtle tank) and I have no room for it in my tiny bedroom. The dorm room is about twice as big as my bedroom, so I definitely could keep fish there, but it's $10,000 per year to live there. =/

Still, aquariums look so elegant and awesome, especially with all the little fishes of different colours. I always liked neon fish.

Ah yes! You're right...Marine fish...That's what I meant, of course ;) lol She had a tropical freshwater tank for years before she moved on to the marine fish :D

Wow! They are wonderful. :wild:  But what do they eat? There are so many different animals together... > I know it's a stupid question :blushing:, but I never had an aquarium!

You got a beautiful aquarium. So much variety and color. It must take a lot of time and dedication to maintain it. I don't have a tank, but two garden ponds bleeding guppies. One is a small prefab, shown below.

^ I really love that! Those are the guppies in the left hand corner?

Aw thanks! The red things in the top far left are tiny flowers actually. I wish my guppies looked that good haha You can make two out in the below pic, since their body color is the same murky pond water shade and they are so tiny, you can't make them out at a distance!

^ oh! I totally thought those were the guppies! Ah well...lol...my mom currently has a pond in her backyard with koi fish and for a while we had a turtle living in the pond until one day it just walked away and never came back lol

^Aww sneaky turtle :) Not the same, but some years back on rainy days a wild tortoise used to visit our garden. We also found two escaped pet star tortoises in our garden on separate occasions. Never found the owner, and since I unable to look after them I gave them away.

It really all depends on the crab or fish. My tank is peaceful so they mainly eat different types of small shrimp like mysis and brine as well as some small particle foods like plankton.

Here's three new additions to the tank...

A cleaner wrasse (it likes to groom other fish inhabitants)

And two cleaner shrimp (they also groom fish and keep everyone clean, healthy, and happy)

I thought they eat some kind of ration. LOL You should spend a lot of money to buy food for them. There are specialty shops that sell this food?

Beautiful! :wild: They have names?

I'd love to have a salt water tank one day. I've had a big fresh water tank a few years ago and it's really relaxing to watch the fish indeed.
You only refresh the water every 2 weeks, that's all?? I thought it would be an awful lot of work! I had to clean the bottom of the fresh water tank often and keep the plants in good shape.

I never touch anything inside the tank, other than keeping the front glass clean so I can see the fishies. Hehe. The great thing about saltwater aquariums is that marine animals will take care of and clean everything for you, if you get the right critters for the job.

P.S. Ashtanga, fish food isn't any more expensive for marine animals than it is freshwater. It's about the same as far as I can tell. And no, I don't really have names for the most part. I do call the blue tang "Dory", like her cartoon counterpart in Disney's "Finding Nemo".
