NEW YORK (CBS) ― The Apollo Theater is installing a Walk of Fame Monday morning.

The first plaques on the 125th Street sidewalk in front of the theater will honor entertainers who have been inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame, including: Quincy Jones, Patti Labelle, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald.

The construction of the Walk of Fame was announced in 2008. A ceremony will begin Monday at 11 a.m.

New York's Apollo Theater took on a touch of Hollywood when it began installing its own Walk of Fame with plaques that will honor entertainers including late singers James Brown and Michael Jackson.

The famed Harlem auditorium has long been creating its own Hall of Fame list of legends who had close ties to the theater. But on Monday (May 10) it began installing bronze rectangular plaques on the sidewalk outside the theater, including for James Brown, Smokey Robinson and Ella Fitzgerald.

"I started out at the Apollo and it will always be a home to me," Robinson, 70, said in a statement on being named in the first group to have plaques installed. "For me to have a plaque honoring me in front of the Apollo Theater is one of the proudest achievements in my life."

Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin will have their own plaques laid down when their names are inducted into the theater's Hall of Fame next month.

In recent years, the theater has served as a place for thousands of fans to honor both Jackson and James Brown after they died.

Jackson first performed at the Apollo's Amateur Night at age nine with his brothers. Their group, the Jackson 5, won the competition in 1969, when the pop singer was 11 years old, performing Smokey Robinson's "Who's Lovin' You."

How about releasing all the footage of him performing there in 2002 then?

Where about's is the Apollo, is it on broadway, im off to NYC this july see, so i'd like to see this.

it's in Harlem. You should check their site, they have tours around the theatre several times a week. I was on such a tour when I was in NYC in April. It was amazing. They let us inside and ON THE STAGE and we were able to touch the famous lucky tree!!! Wow, it was fantastic. And the guide was there when Michael and his brothers performed there in 1969. And he told us about that performance... I even cried.

Amazing tour. All the fans who come to NYC should go there. It's such an iconic place.
