The Jackson 5 Revived

Mumbai: It was music composer and singer Adnan Sami's biggest project -- an album that was supposed to mark the comeback of the group comprising Michael Jackson and his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy (who formed the band The Jackson 5 which later became The Jacksons). After the demise of Michael, it looked like a stillborn project and the Jackson family wasn't showing any inclination to go ahead with the proposed international album.

Adnan, naturally, had given up hope. But a couple of days back he got a call from the Jackson family asking him to start working on the project again as they wanted Michael's wish to be fulfilled. Jackson's sister Janet, who couldn't be a part of the original project, will lend her voice to the portions that were supposed to be sung by Michael.

"It is a moment of joy as well as sadness. Joy because my project is taking off, sadness because I was hoping to work with the one and only Michael Jackson and learn from him. It was a devastating loss for me. The family was thinking of scrapping the project since Michael can't be a part of it but they now want to complete all projects Michael wanted to do -- and this was one of them. So we begin again," Adnan told DNA.

He adds: "Janet Jackson's inclusion becomes a big USP as she will bring her unique style. The Jackson family will start working on the album from next year."

Word is that Michael's elder brother Jermaine, who was in Mumbai recently to shoot a song with Adnan, is behind the project's revival. The Jacksons want to reunite and Janet's inclusion means they don't have to change the band's name. "She is part of the family and automatically fits into Jackson 5," points out Adnan.

The project is expected to have a mix of Motown music, something that the Jacksons specialised in, besides Indian and world music elements.

Thanks for posting. This is exciting. I've never heard Janet sing with her brothers on a record before, besides 'Scream' with Michael.

But it's wrong that Adnan said that Janet will fill in that 'missing spot' left by Michael in the Jackson 5. They should just be called The Jacksons, IMO.

U R welcome.

I feel U, I just think that because it's really a celebration of J5's 40th anniversary, that they refer to J5. I don't think they are allowed to actually use that name any more anyway. Hence The Jack5ons title for the A&E TV show.

My 10 cents: Michael is inextricably tied to J5, so why not mention him.
Too bad that Randy didn't wanna be a part of it...would make more sense.
But, I think it's sweet that Janet is gonna stand in the gap for her brother.

It should be interestin'.

Some of the brothers sang on Janet's "Dream Street" album on the songs Marlon produced. Janet & LaToya also sang backup on "P.Y.T." Then there was the song "2300 Jackson Street". Janet & Mike sang on Eddie Murphy's "Yeah". If you listen closely to "Tabloid Junkie", Janet is singing the "Aaahs" as well.

I'm just worried that they'll (the family) will steal Michael's unreleased songs and pass them off as their own!!!!!!!

I don't think they can do that IF they wanted to. They belong to the estate.

On that subject, I'd rather see the family singing Michael's unrecorded songs, or doing the background vocals for the unfinished/unreleased ones, than for anybody else to do it.

You might be right!!!

I hope that all the unreleased and demos stay in their original state.

I don't mind if they sing the unrecorded songs that are currently only in written form........as long as they credit Michael for all hard work and pay the estate!!!!

They can if they get permission, like the "Threetles" did with John Lennon's demos for "Free As A Bird" & "Real Love" in 1994. They got them from Yoko Ono. Or Kenny G. overdubbing his sax over Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" and putting it on his album. There's several "duet" songs that Natalie Cole did with her father, including one released this year on the Nat King Cole remix album. It's also popular today for record companies to release new remixes of old songs like "A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis Presley or the Verve Remixed & Motown Remixed CDs. Or those endless "new" Tupac albums, one was mixed by Emimem.

Yeah, I know they can get permission. I was referring to "stealing" them as the post I was responding to stated ;)

Michael was never on board to re-unite with the Jackson 5. He made that very clear.

These rumours were started by Jermaine around 2006. Jermaine has been promising a J5 union since 2001.

I thought that Michael said he had no plans to TOUR with them.
That doesn't mean that he wasn't going to lend his voice to an album in celebration of their 40th anniversary.

Unless he plan to sing his parts in London, he probably would had only hummed a few lines like he did in 2300 Jackson Street.

Also, I think it was kind of confirmed that Michael didn't want to do any projects with is brothers. The last time he mentioned doing anything with them was when he said that he may helped them with an album. However, that was back in 2001 after the MGS, so I don't know if that offer still stood.

You are right, we don't know, that offer may have still been good, and I think probably was. I cannot see Michael refusing to participate on a celebratory album with his brothers. J5 was part of his legacy too.

Singers do full out songs with others all the time now without ever having been in the studio at the place or time.

He did make it clear that he was not going to tour with them though.
We know that he didn't even like touring solo, so that's no surprise.

It had more to do with the fact that he left the Jackson 5 with a bad taste in his mouth. He became disillusion with them with regards to the Victory Tour. Apparently, the brothers would let Michael do almost all the work: like picking the choreographer, creating the stage and the special effects, doing the custom designs, hiring the camera crew, and so on. The brothers pretty much just showed up for rehearsals and they had a tendency not to come sometimes. They also outvoted him on several occasions, sometimes stalling a good idea he had. Since they were his brothers and they were a group, he couldn't fire them. Despite all the extra work Michael did, however, he still got the same pay as his brothers.

Which is why they never tour without Michael, because he was the one who literally made those tours. And Michael knew if he did tour with them, he would had put the same amount of work and time as he did with his own tours, but received less pay for it, had to vote on everything with his brothers, deal with the crocks Joe hanged with, and dealing with his brothers who could be less reliable than dancers Michael could hire himself. They were also not the best singers or dancers in the business, which Michael usually works with on his tours.

The Victory Tour was suppose to go worldwide, but Michael quit the group as soon as he heard these plans. These are the main reason why Michael never wanted to tour with them. Too much drama.

I'm interested to see what comes out of this, I like the idea Janet singing Michael's parts.

Really? I didn't know that! Have to listen TJ and keep that in mind.

Michael was never going to be part of this cheesy project never!
I'm so sick of them using his name to promote themselves even now in death they won't give it a rest so what if they're family it doesn't make it right

Yep, I agree... The whole thing sounds fishy to me...

I will never ever buy a record of Jermaine .. I think its sad they do all this now when Michael is gone. its like his out of the picture, now we can do it... Isint it weird that Jermaine starts doing music again when Michael dies ? He wants his fame.

Well, it is the best time. The Jacksons have the world's attention for the first time for years and without Michael to guide and protect them, they can sink or die on their own. They would be fools not to take this opportunity.

It may not sound morally right to some fans, but business and is business. Even Michael understood that. That is how he was able to get the Beetles’ catalogue with little regret.

So is this project actually happening? Is it real or is it just some sort of tabloid thing?

If this is real I am curious to hear it, even though nobody can ever replace our man.

Apart from Janet, the Jackson siblings only sounded good when brother Michael was involved (usually writing, composing and doing some vocals).

I disagree. I have all 13 of Jermaine's albums and they're good, especially the Motown ones that he had more to do with the production on. The stuff he produced for Switch is nice too. Marlon isn't all that great as a singer, but he was good as a producer. The "2300 Jackson Street" album has no input from Mike or Marlon other than the title song, and it's pretty good.

As if they had ever ASKED for Michael's wishes. This isn't in his interest and there is no doubt now that he cannot deny it anymore they misuse his name to sell things he never wanted anything to do with. Big disgrace.

This was in the works before michael died, and 4 songs were complete according to adnan sami maybe michael is on the 4 completed songs, in 2008 all the brothers were in vegas recording with michael according to jermaine . and jackie and latoya hinted at it and said they were recording and it was a secret.
