An earthquake has struck South Australia's Eyre Peninsula measuring around 4.5 on the Richter scale.

An earthquake has struck early on Sunday on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, north-west of Adelaide.

Department of Primary Industry and Resources seismologist David Love said the quake, measuring around 4.5 to five on the Richter scale, struck near the township of Cleve about 7.17am (CAT).

It was followed by at least one aftershock, Mr Love said.

When asked whether the quake caused any damage, Mr Love said: 'We haven't heard of anything yet'.

Cleve Council mayor Allan Edwards said he felt the quake but put it down to pipes moving in his ceiling.

'I thought we had some pipes in the roof of the house moving,' Mr Edwards told AAP.

'I was having a bit of a rest this morning and Iheard it.'
He said he also felt an aftershock about two minutes after the initial tremor.
