EXCLUSIVE: Sacha Baron Cohen Set To Play Singer Freddie Mercury In GK Film

"We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time," May told the HARDtalk show.

Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan is writing the screenplay, he added.

The film, which will focus on the period leading up to Live Aid in 1985, will begin shooting next year.

"I think we'll try and keep ourselves out of it as much as we can," May said.

Baron Cohen had been "on this project since we started talking about it seriously with Peter Morgan a couple of years ago," he added.

May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor will oversee music featured in the film, which will include songs by the band and by Mercury as a solo performer.

Graham King, of GK Films, which is co-producing the movie along with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's production company Tribeca, said Queen was "a music brand all unto itself".

"Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer so with Sacha in the starring role, coupled with Peter's screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."

Morgan, whose previous works include the Oscar-nominated screenplays for The Queen and Frost/Nixon, is already working on the script for the as-yet-untitled project.

Queen's 21-minute appearance at the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium featured Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions and Radio Ga Ga. It is considered to be one of the classic rock performances.

on a second thought.. Sacha Baron Cohen does look a bit like Freddie..
 
If this is true then it might be a great outcome if Sacha learns how to perform as impressively as Freddie. Freddie was an incredible talent, both as a performer and song writer. Sacha really does look like him though.
 
At first I was in shock reading this (I mean who can pull off Freddie in a movie?) but they actually might be able to pull it off.
The fact that the other bandmates have agreed to help and the family of Freddie has approved it makes me kind of looking forward to this thing.

ugh... I don't think he looks anything like him. You guys are probably only imagining the Borat image with the 'stache, but without that he looks nothing like him.
 
There's a slight resemblance but remember biopics don't need the actor to have a striking resemblance but just nod towards them. Just remember that in Apollo 13 Tom Hanks looks nothing like Jim Lovell (whereas Kevin Costner did). As long as they get the right person for the job.
 
In terms of appearance............its a pretty good match......


Concerns:
1.) I'm not sure whether Cohen can do serious dramatic acting.
2.) I have very little confidence whether Cohen can perform like Freddie.
3.) I hate Bio-Pics when there is too much made up stuff!!!

If you can act as gay as he does in his movies, you can do EVERYTHING.
 
As long as he doesn't sing any of the songs, I got no problems with it. Let him lip synch to Queen's music.
 
It would be interesting to see Sacha in a different acting role than Comedy for once :)
