Found this statistic on statista.com (Global employment rate by...| Statista). It also says that USA has the highest employment-to-population ratio, while Europe and Central Asia has the lowest.

To be honest, I'm surprised that only half the world population are working. In school, there is the emphasis "Work hard and study, and you'll do great" and in the real world, it's not really the case. Of course, there are some demographics that are unable to work (within their control or not) such as minors, people living in third world countries, etc.

I always thought there had to be two thirds of the world's population employed to support the world population and keep the world going, so to speak.
 
This number is based on “active people” meaning people aged 18 to 67 ish? If that’s the case it isn’t a lot but I assume they also took in account children, disabled and elderly people.
