Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #27 - Babyface
Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #27
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.
From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant
***************
Songs by the multi-talented BABYFACE
Prolific Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter/producer Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds became one of the cornerstones of rhythm and blues music in the 1990’s and his catalog of compositions contains styles ranging from the swingbeat productions he created with L.A. Reid to his trademark romantic ballads.
The following wide-ranging list speaks for itself featuring, as it does, not only songs written and recorded by Babyface himself but many of the key releases on LaFace, the label he created in 1989 with his longtime partner, Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid.
You’ll also discover titles recorded by The Deele (the group which included both Babyface and L.A.), Milestone (who were Babyface and his brothers Kevon & Melvin Edmonds) and After 7 who are Kevon & Melvin along with L.A. Reid’s cousin, Keith Mitchell. In addition, note that the co-author credits on many of the key titles is out-standing songwriter Darryl Simmons who, like LA & Babyface, called Atlanta home.
Another standout is the range of songs that Babyface has written for motion pictures including the memorable score he wrote for Forest Whitaker’s movie version of Terry McMillan’s novel “Waiting To Exhale” in 1995.
