A week long series of events will take place leading up to the ceremony to help celebrate its return to Cleveland.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a nonprofit organization that exists to educate visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music. And once again, they've passed over legends like:

Genesis
Yes
Rush
The Moody Blues

Frankly, I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. Yes, they have inducted some real music legends, but they pass over so many more. They actually laughed when someone wrote them a letter asking The Moody Blues to be inducted (this is a band that revolutionized rock and pop music, sold millions of records, and has tons of fans all around the world. Even one of my best friends from high school liked them.)

And why in the world is Run D.M.C. being inducted? They aren't even Rock and Roll. They ought to change their name, if they're going to induct people that aren't even in the genre that they're advertising.

Jann Wenner is in charge of who is nominated. If he doesn't like the singer/band musically or doesn't like the members personally, they don't get in. It's never been strictly Rock music, if that's the case then The Jackson 5, MJ, The Supremes, The Ink Spots, Hank Williams, or Madonna wouldn't be in there. It's like Elvis being called the King of Rock N Roll (which he hated) when very little of his music was actually rock. Run DMC is pretty much the reason rap is popular today, so that's probably why they're in. They made rap popular worldwide and the were 1st superstars in the genre. They were the 1st rappers on the cover of Rolling Stone and shown on MTV.

one of the definitions of r&r today can be taken as whatever spawned out of what we now know as 'pop'. i like the idea, but i feel inclined to share the Sex Pistols' sentiments...

Ok Ladies & Gents,
After reading the posts in this thread, I decided to ask/email The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the hows, whys, and the who chooses the inductees each year...

Here is the email response I got...

Hi Susie-
Thanks so much for your quick reply! Rock Hall Monday-Friday, 10:00am-5:30pm.

Here is info on the Inductee process:
Election of Inductees
Leaders in the music industry joined together in 1983 to establish the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. One of the Foundation’s many functions is to recognize the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and roll by inducting them into the Hall of Fame.

The Categories
Performers
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.
The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 500 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.

Non-Performers
Songwriters, producers, disc jockeys, record executives, journalists and other industry professionals who have had a major influence on the development of rock and roll.

Early Influences
Artists whose music predated rock and roll but had an impact on the evolution of rock and roll and inspired rock’s leading artists.
The special selection committee elects the inductees in the Non-Performer and Early Influences categories.

Side Men
This category was introduced in 2000. It honors those musicians who have spent their careers out of the spotlight, performing as backup musicians for major artists on recording sessions and in concert. Though they often play a key role in the creation of memorable music, the public rarely knows them by name. A separate committee, composed primarily of producers, selects the inductees in this category.

Rock & Roll: (noun) African American slang dating back to the early 20th Century. In the early 1950s, the term came to be used to describe a new form of music, steeped in the blues, rhythm & blues, country and gospel. Today, it refers to a wide variety of popular music -- frequently music with an edge and attitu de, music with a good beat and --- often --- loud guitars.© 2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
