Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #24 - Kraftwerk
Jul 15, 2008
Sony/ATV’s “Musical Notes” #24
A fortnightly newsletter highlighting some of the many classic songs in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.
From Alan Warner, Creative Consultant
***************
This week’s special edition of “Musical Notes” prepared by Sony/ATV in Berlin presents an overview of the influential German band...KRAFTWERK.
***************
KRAFTWERK
There is no other band in the history of electronic music that is as influential and mystical as KRAFTWERK. The music engineers from Germany always headed the dialog of technical innovation and the employment in sound and vision.
As their name expresses, the principal theme of their work and songs is the relation between modern technology and humanity. The band members characterize themselves as “music workers” instead of “musicians”. The several individuals hide behind the image of a group as a system or machine. KRAFTWERK do not like to get photographed or interviewed. The only way of expression is the sound, created by their synthesizers and laptops, supported by the visuals of modern life between computers, machines and robots.
INFLUENCE
KRAFTWERK is nearly the most sampled band ever. Its beats and melodies have been used by such artists as Coldplay, Fergie, Prodigy, Beck, Erasure, Madonna, Destiny’s Child, KRS-One, De La Soul, Jay-Z, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Afrika Bambaataa, R.E.M., Dr. Dre and Roni Size.
KRAFTWERK basically invented modern electronic music and paved the way for techno, synth-pop, electro and New Wave. Its effect on everything from rave culture to modern pop music has been gigantic.
HISTORY
Though the lineup of the band has changed over its 36 years of existence, the core of KRAFTWERK remains Ralf Huetter and Florian Schneider, who originally met while studying improvised music in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both classically trained musicians, their shared interests in experimenting with new technologies lead them to eventually form KRAFTWERK in 1970.
Each one of KRAFTWERK’s albums have focused on a specific theme: “Autobahn” conveys the feeling of monotony and exploration associated with travelling on Germany’s expansive highways, “Radioactivity” deals with the concept of radio and the transmission of ideas and sound, and “Computer World” describes a future society in which personal devices and computers are completely integrated into lifestyle. On the album “The Man-Machine”, KRAFTWERK brilliantly illustrates the idea of the worker’s body as a machine of production. This idea pervades the entire album, all the way to the cover image, which depicts the band members attired in stark, crisp red shirts, uniformly devoid of personality.
KRAFTWERK is poetic, classical and revolutionary. It made huge splashes by embracing technology and expanding its possibilities as a method for creating innovative music.
DISCOGRAPHY
The album “Autobahn“ (1974) is considered to be the first Electro-Pop-Record in music history. The songs are made up of reduced melodic fragments that alternate with phases of sound effects.
Bands like Depeche Mode or Ultravox orientated to the sound of KRAFTWERK, especially to the 1978-record “The Man-Machine”. Famous Songs are “The Model” and “The Roboter”.
Genres like Electro and Techno are highly influenced by KRAFTWERK’s 1981-release “Computer World” that contains many danceable songs. The album was a complete success in Japan.
In 2005, KRAFTWERK released “Minimum-Maximum”, a Live-CD/DVD with impressions from their world tour through Japan, USA, Europe and South-America, where they played over 100 concerts.
