"Heartbreaker"

Today, we close off the Album reviews on MJJCBlog
with MJ's 'final' and 6th Studio album with Epic Records
called "Invincible".
To this day, quite a controversial album.
Did you know?

Invincible is dedicated to the fifteen-year-old Afro-Norwegian boy
Benjamin "Benny" Hermansen who was stabbed to death by
a group of neo-Nazis in Oslo, Norway, in January 2001.
The dedication in the album reads,
"Michael Jackson gives 'special thanks':
This album is dedicated to Benjamin 'Benny' Hermansen.
May we continue to remember not to judge man by
the color of his skin, but the content of his Character.
Benjamin ... we love you ... may you rest in peace."

The album is also dedicated to Jackson's grandmother
Nicholette Sottile and his parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson.

MJ began recording new material for the album in October 1997
and finished with "You Are My Life" being recorded only
eight weeks before the album's release in October 2001.

In a 2002 interview with the magazine Vibe,
MJ commented on his inspiration for writing "Speechless" :
"You'll be surprised. I was with these kids in Germany and
we had a big water-balloon fight - I'm serious - and
I was so happy after the fight that I ran upstairs in their house and
wrote "Speechless". Fun inspires me. I hate to say that because
it's such a romantic song but it was the fight that did it.
I was happy and I wrote it in it's entirety right there.
I felt it would be good enough for the album.
Out of the bliss comes magic, wonderment, and creativity."

'Threatened' is said to be the most expensive track on
"Invincible" due to the piecing together of
Rod Serling's vocal contributions on the opening,
the bridge and the closing.
Many of the clips of Rod Serling are taken from the Twilight Zone
episode "It's A Good Life" which
involves a boy taking over a small town and controlling
every aspect of 'the day to day life' of the adults.

If you browse and read in the booklet of the album,
you bump into the 'dedication' of
" I love you... Jabbar and Gypsy" His giraffe and Elephant, lol.

The “Butterflies” video project is scrapped and
even the one for "Unbreakable" never makes it to the screen too
as MJ isn’t satisfied with the project and
his own concept for the video is deemed too expensive and
Sony Music won’t finance it.
Though MJ is not easily defeated, he decides to produce the
“Unbreakable” video by himself and starts to work on the project
alone. Though Sony Music 'simply' pulls the plug out.
So, only five months after the release of INVINCIBLE,
the album is no longer considered as a “priority” by the record company.

To end on a good note,
"Invincible" does hit the N° 1 spot in 11 countries and
it goes on selling an estimated 13 million now
with GOLD in 7 countries and Platinium in 11 different countries.
Still with all this 'controversy' surrounding the album,
it does earn an Award of 'Album of the decade' by Billboard Music.
This album deemed surely to be a 'heartbreaker'.
