R.I.P. Joseph ‘Joe’ Jackson

Joseph "Joe" Jackson, the patriarch who launched the musical Jackson family dynasty, died Wednesday in a Las Vegas hospital, a source close to the family tells CNN.

He was 89.

Jackson was the father and at times manager to pop stars Michael and Janet Jackson, along with the sibling-singing group, The Jackson 5.

The elder Jackson's death came two days after the ninth anniversary of the death of his son, Michael.

He and Katherine Jackson wed in 1949. They moved into into a home on Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana, the following year, where they welcomed their first of 10 children, Maureen "Rebbie" Jackson.

Rebbie was followed by Sigmund "Jackie" Jackson in 1951, Toriano "Tito" Jackson in 1953, Jermaine Jackson in 1954, La Toya Jackson in 1956, Marlon Jackson in 1957, Michael Jackson in 1958, Steven Randall "Randy" Jackson in 1961 and Janet Jackson in 1966.

Marlon's twin, Brandon, died soon after birth.

With a large family to support, Joe Jackson surrendered his dreams of becoming a boxer and secured a job as a crane operator for U.S. Steel.

He and his brother Luther also formed a band in the mid-1950s called The Falcons, intent on booking gigs for extra money.

The band only lasted a few years, but Jackson had developed an ear for music and believed he had found some talent in his children. He formed The Jackson Brothers in 1963 -- with sons Tito, Jackie and Jermaine -- and began entering them in local talent shows. With the addition of Marlon and Michael, The Jackson 5 was born in 1966. Two years later, they signed with Motown Records.

They went on to become one of the most successful R&B groups in history, with their father initially acting as their manager.

At the height of their stardom, The Jackson 5 sold millions of records and had their own CBS variety show.

"Joseph's role as manager dwindled however as Motown CEO Berry Gordy began to take more charge on his act, a role that reverted back to Joseph when he began managing the entire family for performances in Las Vegas," according to Jackson's official site. "Joseph also helped his sons seal a deal with CBS after leaving Motown."

The success of The Jackson 5 led to Michael Jackson going solo, becoming such a major star that he was later dubbed the King of Pop. Youngest daughter Janet also became a hugely successful recording artist.

The elder Jackson managed daughters Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet in the early 1980s until they, like their brothers before, struck out on their own.

Joe Jackson was criticized at times for being a harsh task master. His children told stories about their father being hard on them growing up.

In 2013 interview with CNN, Jackson was asked about his daughter Janet's complaint that the children were not allowed to call him "Dad," instead referring to him as "Joe."

"You had all those kids running hollering around," Jackson said. "They're hollering, 'Dad, Dad, Dad,' you know, and it gets to be -- it sounds kind of funny to me. But I didn't care too much about what they called me, just as long as they (were) able to listen to me and what I had to tell them, you know, in order to make their lives successful. This was the main thing."

Jackson admitted that he disciplined his children physically but said he had no regrets.

Joe Jackson on physically disciplining his kids: 'I'm glad I was tough'

"I'm glad I was tough, because look what I came out with," he said. "I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world. And they treated everybody right."

Jackson also weathered some controversy after his wife documented his alleged extramarital affairs in her book, "My Family, The Jacksons."

The couple split more than once and lived apart for decades, but they reportedly never divorced.

The couple presented a united front when their son Michael died in 2009 from an overdose of Propofol.

The elder Jackson told CNN his son had tried to reach him before his death, but they didn't connect.

"He says, 'Call my father.' This was before he passed. 'He would know how to get me out of this,'" Joe Jackson said. "But they didn't get in touch with me. They said they couldn't find me, but I was right there."

Just this past weekend, Janet Jackson hailed her father during an acceptance speech at a Radio Disney awards ceremony.

Janet Jackson thanks reportedly ailing father

"My mother nourished me with the most extravagant love imaginable," she said. "My father, my incredible father drove me to be the best I can. My siblings set an incredibly high standard, a high bar for artistic excellence."

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

I am deeply saddened by this. While we expected it, as it hits me

It hits me hard!

Joseph, as I've expressed love and anger towards you.. I have never stopped appreciating the good you did - even through questionable times.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

Deep condolences to the Jackson family and to us all.

Joe Jackson deserves many tributes. To quote Marlon Jackson about Michael, "Maybe now they'll leave him alone."

Thank you Jacksons for sharing your family with us.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

While my heart goes out to the family as losing a family member is never easy, I just cant be sad that Joe has passed away. I know that without him , we would not have had Michael But to me Joe will always be the creepy slimey old man. When Michael was alive I tolerated him, when I met Joe in Neverland I made sure to say hello and thank him. But after June 2009, his actions and words just completely horrified me. Im glad in a way that Johvanah had a chance to get to know him, but the fact that she was born and all that dysfunctional mess is just too much to figure out. Just becuse I did not like him does not mean I can not feel empathy with those who loved him. Maybe now that he is gone, people in that family may be able to deal with their issues and in time heal... or maybe not, it is the Jackson family afterall......

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

I'm not entirely happy with how this thread is going to pan out but...
For all of the bad things he may have done,we are on the outside looking in,and IF he caused pain,he has to face that.
Whether he felt guilty or not,he lost a son.
It would take a pretty hard person,to not feel regret and guilt, and we face personal responsibility in life or after life.
For every action, there's consequences, and I'm sad for this man today.

Let him rest in peace, and thank him for the positives ..God Bless JJ

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

RIP Joe. Your son will welcome you into heaven and you will be be reunited.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

R.I.P. Joe.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

Joseph will finally have some peace and I hope his family has that same peace always because they never deserved the overall hatred and vitriol that was directed towards them over time....not at all.....the early years were as good as it gets and Im glad to have had the opportunity to experience those times

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

I'm sure Michael, in spite of everything, has forgiven him, he was that good....... rest in peace, Joe....

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

He may have done some wrong but I think it's important to separate the achievements and successes from the personality and actions of the individual. I respect him greatly and it is a great shame. You will be missed Joe.

Michael Jackson’s Estate Releases Statement In Wake Of Joe Jackson’s Death

Joe Jackson passed away on Wednesday (June 27), at age 89. In the wake of his death, the estate of Joe’s son, Michael Jackson, released a statement mourning the patriarch.

A rep for John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, shared the statement with The Blast on Wednesday afternoon. “We are deeply saddened by Mr. Jackson’s passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Katherine Jackson and the family,” it reads.

“Joe was a strong man who acknowledged his own imperfections and heroically delivered his sons and daughters from the steel mills of Gary, Indiana to worldwide pop superstardom.”

The statement also acknowledges his contributions to the music industry. “Mr. Jackson’s contributions to the history of music are enormous,” it continues. “They were acknowledged by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 in a proclamation naming him as Best Entertainment Manager of All Time; he was inducted into Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2014 and his son Michael acknowledged him with a Joe Jackson Day at Neverland.” Joe Jackson was responsible for kick-starting the careers of Michael and Janet Jackson, as well as managing the Jackson Five.

As previously reported, Joe died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was previously admitted into a hospital for complications with his diagnosis. Since his death, some of his grandchildren – namely Taj and Randy Jackson – have reportedly spoken out on Twitter.

This man is and always will be an example of sheer willpower and dedication. He didn’t choose the path that was the easiest but he choose the path that was best for his family. You taught me to take pride in the Jackson name and what it really means, you taught me dedication in the face of adversity and most of all you showed me strength and fearlessness. There is and never will be someone like you. Fly free and until we meet again The Hawk.

im doing a lisa marie. Totally indifferent feel nothing to him never did. More intrested to see if yet again the estate has to put their hand in their pocket as tight ass janet has just padlocked her purse again.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

I'm beyond devastated. I can't believe that he is gone. Even though I was expecting this sad news, it still hits me very hard.

I know Joe applied questionable methods to raise his kids. But I'm sure his intentions were good. His kid loved him. Michael loved him and I'm sure he loved his kids, including Michael a lot. He just didn't show that love the right way. Without him, there would have been no Michael Jackson. I'll forever be in his debt. He helped shape the career of the greatest entertainer of all time. As a hardcore MJ fan, I can't thank Joe enough. May he be reunited with Michael in the afterlife.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

I feel for his family, especially Katherine, whom must be taking his death the hardest.
Personally I think it was a shame that Joe got to live 9 years longer than his son. Lest we forget that Michael still left him nothing in his will, and in the wake of Michael's death Joe tried to promote a musical act that he was managing.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

Regardless of what I feel for Joe Jackson, Michael did forgive him, so may he RIP. No Michael without Joe either, so I'm grateful to him for that at least.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to the family, may God bless them thru this time of loss.

I’ve removed 3 posts from this thread so as to keep it on topic and personal insults are also not permitted. It’s inevitable that the passing of Joe will stir up many different emotions in each of us, mainly because we all love Michael and the emotions are born from love for him. However, Joe has passed away, I believe we should remain respectful no matter what our feelings towards some of Joe’s actions were in the past, that is all I ask!

On a personal note, I hope Joe had a peaceful, pain free passing and my thoughts are with the family. It is never easy to lose a parent or loved one no matter what the circumstances are.

Re: Joe Jackson dies aged 89

Sad news.

But 89 and he was fit and healthy almost till the end. - He had a long and happy life with many children and grandchildren. I think he died happy and free.

We can not in 2018 judge how he raised his children as a black man in Gary Indiana in the 50' and 60' - it really was a different world back then. How people raised children were different - and black people were treated unfair and had no doubt more risk to end up in the streets or even jail. There was so much racism back then (MJ was the first black artist to be shown on MTV - and that was in the 80's...!)

Joe did all he could to keep his children away from the streets and out of jail - he wanted them to have succes and better lives than he had - Steelmill - hard work long hours...

Not to say he did not made many mistakes - especially with our 2018-eyes - but he succeded - all his children succeded and he made pop history with The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson... Enough said. Joe have my respect. Had Joe lived in 2018 in todays world with less racism (unfortunately there still is some...) but then I am sure he would have done many things different... It's a different world really.

R.I.P. Joe
