HISTORICAL DATES
1969 - Motown Records buys The J5 out of their recording contract w/ Steeltown Records. The J5 signed a contract with Motown Records on July 26, 1968, However, as the group's Steeltown contract had not yet expired. Motown Records negotiated to get the group out of their Steeltown agreement and ultimately succeeded with a financial settlement. Their new Motown contract was fully executed on March 11, 1969.
1974 - Michael appears on a TV special "Free To Be… You and Me" and sings "When I Grow Up" with Roberta Flack. Free to be... You and me is a Emmy and Peabody award winning film. Hosted by Marlo Thomas and starring people like Mel Brooks, Alan Alda, Michael Jackson, Rosey Grier, Roberta Flack and Kris Kristofferson, FTBYM was a mixture of animation, musical, live action and documentary rolled into one. Kids of all shades played together and talked about their feelings on life.
1976 - The Jackson 5's do not renew their contract with Motown and move to CBS/Epic records. The Motown contract expired on 3/11/76 and their CBS/Epic contract went into effect. They change their name to "The Jackson's" because of a contractual agreement that the J5 name belonged to the Motown label.
1993 - Michael on crutches, attends an American Film Industry dinner in honour of Elizabeth Taylor at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Elizabeth was presented the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award.
2001 - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announce 365 recordings that make up their 'Songs of the Century'. Three of Michael Jackson's songs are chosen for this honor. The Rock Era (1970-1980): 'I Want You Back', The 80's (1980-1990): 'Beat It' and 'We Are The World' (co-written by Lionel Richie).
2009 - The two day pre-sale for Michal Jackson 'This Is It" concerts began on March 11, — More than 1.5  million fans caused two sites offering pre-sale tickets to crash within minutes of going online. In the space of two hours, 190,000 tickets were sold. Two million people tried to que for pre-sale tickets in the space of 18 hours. Veronica Schmidt of The Times stated of the reception, "Michael Jackson has floored his critics", while organizers proclaimed it a "cultural phenomenon"
