Make That Change

MJJC recognises that a large part of Michael's legacy is his fans - his relationship with us, his inspiration and influence and how we choose to honour him.

Honouring him means treating everyone with respect, giving 150% in all that we do and, most of all, reaching out and helping others.

The MJJC Legacy Project is therefore pleased to announce Make That Change!!

We want fans to get out there in their communities and spread Michael's message of love for mankind and the planet.

We have researched the charities that Michael supported over the years. The information for some are listed below. More to come!!!

But of course you can choose to become involved with a charity that fits your particular interest/passion. Over time we will post information on organisations/projects/activities from around the world, including contact details.

If you are already involved in charity work we would love to hear from you as well. Tell us about the work that the organisation you are involved in does and how fans can help.

Make That Change will be a resource for fans and a place for fans to upload their pics, post their 'field reports'/journal entries and share their experiences.

We also encourage fans to get together in groups and do something positive for the environment and for children. If you are already involved in a project, share your stories. We would love to hear from you.

This is the time for us to act, to be the change that we want to see. And to show the world that Michael Jackson has inspired us to dream, believe and ACHIEVE.

Sincerely Your,
MJJC

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

idk - maybe this might be too hard to do, but do you think we could make a donation to one group collectively next June 25th? I donated a little bit in his name to some random public education charity a few days after he died, but I was thinking it would be great if some organization suddenly got thousands of checks from us next June 25th.

There's got to be about 10,000 or so hard core types around the world that can get together a $100 each by next year. It would be pretty sweet to donate a $1mm in honor of michael jackson.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

hrp102 I love your idea! That would be totally awesome!! If I can do anything to help please let me know!

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

omg he had supported a lot of charity organisations!
I'm proud of Michael lol
I wish I had money to give too ;-(((

This would be a great idea! :clapping: We should think about that.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

hrp102, that is a good idea. One of our team members had also made the suggestion and we will have to see how it can work logistically.

Thanks everyone for your responses! The Legacy Project is always looking volunteers. Hit me up with a PM if you are interested in being a part of this important work!

I also want to say that we all appreciate the home we have found here at MJJC. We are a community of fans who have come to rely on each other through every high and low of being a Michael Jackson fan. So, be sure to donate to MJJC! The information for doing so is right at the top of the page. It says MJJCommunity Donations - News - Chat. If paying by Paypal is not possible, just PM Gaz and he can send you details about how you can make a donation!

Let's make sure we can stay together for years to come:D

The main reason why I wanted to come to this community is that I wanted to give with other fans to one charity.Together with fans I want to show the world what a wonderful man Michael was.
Maybe we could give together with other groups of fans and everyone can give what they want.
Didn`t he have 10.000000 fans on facebook?
But I would prefer to do it on his birthday.
Meanwhile I´m trying to make a change for abandoned cats.
I saw MJ even cared about a little bug and called for security because he didn´t want to dance on it.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

I think the people that run this site will have a better sense of how to organize something like this. lol - part of the reason I like the idea of individual checks going out is the image of overloading whatever postal service is involved or of some charity group all of a sudden getting thousands of envelopes from fans . . . it seems so improbable (to me at least) that there's the kind of naive silliness to it you might expect from a Michael Jackson project.

Just think one dollar one fan. Look how much money can be raised even if half the fans give

The Hospital for Sick Children

(SickKids) is a health-care community dedicated to improving the health of children. Our mission is to provide the best in family-centred, compassionate care, to lead in scientific and clinical advancement, and to prepare the next generation of leaders in child health.
The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), the largest paediatric academic health sciences centre in Canada.

SickKids strength is the integration of its three core businesses: patient care, research and learning. The Hospital is well-known throughout Canada and around the world for innovation, excellence, compassion and family-centred care. Our Emergency Department counts 50,000 visits a year, our clinics, 175,000, and our in-patient departments, 13,000.

Established in 1875, SickKids has a long-standing tradition of providing the best possible care for children and for health promotion. Take Pablum, which our doctors invented in the 1930s to prevent malnutrition among infants. Royalties from the sale of Pablum led to the foundation of our Research Institute in 1954. Over the years, the Institute has become known as home for many leading scientists whose work attracts international attention.

Affiliated with the University of Toronto, we have always focused on learning – no more so than today when technology has accelerated the rate of discovery and dramatically increased our knowledge base. To help us understand and capture what matters in the care of children, we established the Learning Institute in 2007.

Through education of health professionals and researchers, international conferences, licensing of products, site visits, publications and personal interaction, we share our knowledge with the world at large. With a passionate and dedicated staff, and unparalleled community support through SickKids Foundation, we are guided by the vision: Healthier Children. A Better World.

The 2-4-7 Distress Centres of The Greater Toronto and Surrounding Area

Volunteers are a vital part of the Distress Centres. Every year, volunteers contribute more than 100,000 hours to our 24 hour Distress and Crisis lines, providing immediate access to help and support.

Under the supervision of professional staff, all volunteers go through screening and training prior to taking distress calls or working with survivors. Volunteers also receive ongoing professional support and in service sessions. Experienced volunteers learn many life and communication skills which enable them to function more effectively in other aspects of their lives.

What some of the volunteers say about the Distress Centre experience:

"I feel I have given something back to the community."

"I've improved my communication skills - it's helped me at work."

"I know what it's like to go through tough times- and now I have something to offer others."

"Helping others makes me feel good about myself."

If you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in your own and someone else's life, if you welcome a challenge and if you can spare the equivalent of about 16 hours or 4 shifts per month, consider exploring the opportunities open at Distress Centres. Please telephone us:

Distress Centre Central 416-598-0166
Distress Centre North 416-486-3180
Distress Centre Scarborough 416-439-0744
Survivor Support Programme 416-595-1716

An application/information package will be mailed to you and you can call us to arrange a personal interview.

Since 1967, as an initially modest outreach of a concerned group of community leaders, the Distress Centres has provided 24-hour telephone support, 365 days a day. Hundreds of thousands of calls later, this agency continues to offer round the clock response to those experiencing emotional distress or in need of crisis intervention and suicide prevention. We also provide face to face support and counseling to people dealing with the effects of suicide and homicide.

Some other things you may not have known about the Distress Centres:

We have 600 volunteers at three locations (Downtown, North Toronto and Scarborough)
We respond to approximately 120,000 calls each year on the Distress Centres helplines.
More than half of our calls are received after hours and on weekends, when other services are closed.
We provide consultation and outreach to other organizations across Ontario on suicide prevention.
We provide a Resource Library accessible to families, volunteers, staff and interested members of the community.
Through our face-to-face Survivor Support Programme, we counsel 500 families and friends annually who are suffering from the pain of bereavement caused by suicide.
We provide assistance, in person, to persons dealing with a homicidal death through our Homicide Bereavement Programme.
We are a United Way Member Agency.

Our Mission Statement
The mission of the Distress Centres is to provide emotional support, crisis intervention and suicide prevention to those who request our services. We do this by:

providing a confidential service available 24 hours a day to persons in distress;
ensuring all residents of our rapidly changing, culturally diverse city are aware of our services;
providing suicide postvention and emotional support to people dealing with the effects of suicide;
providing bereavement counseling to people dealing with the effects of homicide;
developing new programs as needed;
collaborating with and assisting the growth of complementary organizations;
providing consultation, education and training to develop a deeper understanding within the community of the issues faced by our clients.

People Living with HIV and AIDS in Toronto

Philip Aziz was an art teacher living in Toronto who died of an AIDS related illness in 1991. Due to the stigma related to AIDS he lived alone and isolated with his illness. In the final year of his life Philip found the spiritual, emotional and practical support along with acceptance, faith and love, amidst a caring church community in downtown Toronto. He bequeathed his estate to “Church in the City” with the request that his gift be used to begin a Hospice that would offer the same type of unconditional love and support he received from this church, to others living with the challenges of a life-threatening illness. Philip Aziz Centre continues this legacy of love, support and compassion, through trained volunteers and staff that are committed to helping make a difficult life journey more meaningful and manageable for persons facing a life threatening illness

WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Disease Information
Histiocytosis is a rare blood disease that is caused by an excess of white blood cells called histiocytes. The histiocytes cluster together and can attack the skin, bones, lung, liver, spleen, gums, ears, eyes, and/or the central nervous system. The disease can range from limited involvement that spontaneously regresses to progressive multiorgan involvement that can be chronic and debilitating. In some cases, the disease can be life-threatening.

In some ways, histiocytosis is similar to cancer and has historically been treated by oncologists with chemotherapy and radiation. Unlike cancer, histiocytosis sometimes goes into remission without treatment.

The vast majority of people diagnosed with histiocytosis are children under the age of 10, but it is also found in adults of all ages.

It is approximated that histiocytosis affects 1 in 200,000 children born each year in the United States, although is found in children and adults world wide. this number was tally up in the states. Click on any country in the national/international list to see each country. This illness is so rare, there is little research into its cause and treatment, and it is often referred to as an "orphan disease," meaning it strikes too few people to generate government - supported research.

I found this fundrasing page on this forum it´s one of his fans who made it
http://www.unicef.org.uk/myfundraising/ViewFundraiser.aspx?web=MJ

I found another page who collects money for children with cancer and for research work
Its in swedish .MJ was american and he supported such organisations in USA.

I guess there are more projects going on in the world in MJs name.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

Hi all, I live only two hours away from Bubbles home in Wachula, FL. I was wondering if we could give a donation as a group to adopt him for a year (I think it's $150/yr) and I could go visit him and take a photo with him while making the donation from MJJC group of fans.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

Hi everybody,

I am from Hollanbd and one of MJ's biggest fans has started up a wonderful organisation called "MJ's Child Support". I try to help the organisation now and then by trying to sell bracelets in green and pink, saying "MJ-Heal the world".
This is the their website http://www.child-support.org/, there you can read what the organisation is about and how you can help.

Thank you!!

Loive,
Charlotte

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

Is there anyone out there who knows what charity Michael was supporting as far as the message of "This Is It", i.e. conservation, preventing rain forest destruction, curbing global warming? It seem like most of the charities listed are not really focused on that (not to say they aren't great charities and totally worthy of support).
But that is what he was most passionate about in the movie. Was he going to start a new charity or ask people to support an existing one? I would really like to find out, so I could put my effort toward whatever he had in mind. It is a cause that I am very passionate about as well and have supported certain charities but I am not sure what Michael had in mind. Perhaps Kenny Ortega would know?

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

Michael would have loved this, we know he would. Im so proud of his fans..

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

Is there anyway this could be a sticky? I already had to do a search for it. Threads disappear so fast on this board.

That was a lot of work for you (ChosenOne) to find and post these links. It be a shame to lose them.

I also agree with emphasizing the TII movie message of saving the planet. What charity was MJ supporting in that regard?

I still want to go visit Bubles and make a donation but I can't afford the whole $150 for the right to the membership and visit. If anyone live in Florida and want to do this, let me know.

Thanks

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

It will be made a sticky very soon!:D

I was searching for rainforest when I found this page where you can click and donate.
It´s for free and we can click everyday.
http://www.therainforestsite.com/clickToGive/home.faces

We have this game to give rice http://www.freerice.com/index.php

There are so many good charities in the world and Michael couldn´t support them all.
When I read "promise every child the right to a childhood "on unicefs site I thought that´s something Michael would have supported.

http://www.savetherainforest.org/
Here you can read about how to help save the rainforrest and get a better environment

There are many sites about saving rainforest.
I think to plant a tree is a good thing too.It could be in the rainforest , in Africa, anywhere.
Didn´t Michael donate money to plant trees somewhere?

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

I agree there's many charities but we should only support the one Michael was supporting or the ones we know are honestly doing something.

For example I gave money to Heal the world thinking that was Michael's and it turns out the Estate is suing them.

Also many charities give only a very small percentage to actual charity work and the fat cats running it are pocketing the bulk of donations.

I don't know if Michael was supporting PETA but I know he loved elephants and Peta is doing a lot to stop elephant abuse and other animals so we could consider them too.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

I think it would be better to focus on one or two organizations per year - at least for any sort of collective effort. If we get too diffuse it'll end up not making a clear impact. I suppose the most reasonable choices would be something international. I'm in the U.S., but it might be weird asking people to invest in something that only addresses issues in one country.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

That is a good point hrp102. It would good to choose something that has an international impact.

But I want to also say that while making a financial contribution to a charity or charities is commendable, the focus for this particular legacy project is people getting involved in something that they feel passionate about.

We want to empower fans through information. Empower them to go out there and agitate, participate and make a change.

Michael said quite clearly at the end of TII that we have to stop relying and waiting on the nefarious 'they'. It is up to US to make the change that we want to see. We can make a difference, no matter how small if we just get out there and get involved! Change lives.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

I am so happy to see this thread! Michael has inspired me to make volunteering a part of my daily life, and I've been wondering where all the other people like me were.
I've been doing feral cat rescue for a couple of years. I have a kitten here with me right now that I rescued on Michael's birthday, to celebrate his birthday.
I became a certified childbirth educator and I'm planning to start teaching free classes to low-income parents-to-be, with a huge emphasis on bonding/attachment/parenting.
I've been a vegan for 8 years.
I'm basically just trying to live my life in a way that I am giving back and truly making a change every day of my life.
This thread is awesome; I am so ready to throw my heart and soul into doing even more.

With global warming, no matter how much money is donated, it will not matter unless we change our ways with regards to carbon dioxide emissions. I am a vegan, I have stopped flying, I try to buy only local food and have started gardening. I hope to ultimately grow all my own food, stop driving, and stop using the heater. Incredibly inconvenient solutions, of course, but unfortunately what needs to happen to avoid this impending global catastrophe.
