Dance troupe takes top honors in Homecoming's lip-synching event

"I just want to see people dance," freshman crowd member Nikki Milligan said.

Those around nodded in approval. The Black Student Association even encouraged students to rock the vote by sporting white shirts with the slogan, "I Heart My Vote."

"It's election year, and we want to kind of focus on it," junior Shannon Morton said.

BSU Elite's routine brought in a large audience, as their performance received one of the loudest crowd reactions. Other big acts of the night included University Singers, Rhythms Dance Troupe and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, who ended up winning in the greek category.

In honor of the King of Pop, three groups performed to Michael Jackson medleys, while Alpha Omicron Pi sorority's group brought a giant stuffed panda onstage to help with its routine. There was no lack of musical or dance diversity.

But despite the judges' vote, the Spectrum girls' routine to Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" was a crowd favorite. This was their first year in the competition, and they took home the crowd favorite award.
"Everyone just loved the idea. All of our members were behind us 100 percent. They were excited and we were pumped," Spectrum member Patrick Pataky said.

Awesome feminist singer-songwriter

First, congrats to Michael Hussey for his Best Local Political Blog award! It is very well-earned. He passes on the message that Lorna Bracewell performed at the awards ceremony, and that she brought down the house. Check her out — she does sound pretty great. I’m not sure if she’ll ween me of my love for Michael Jackson, but she gives him a run for his money.

Also ead over to Pushing Rope and give Michael much-deserved congrats.

Motown Celebrates The 50th Anniversary Of The Sound That Changed America

SANTA MONICA, CA. (Top40 Charts/ Universal Music Enterprises) - As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy's legendary Motown Records made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century.
Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & The Jackson 5, Lionel Richie & The Commodores, The Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Gladys Knight & The Pips, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and race.
No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture.
With more than 180 No. 1 hit songs worldwide and counting, that influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop, Motown celebrates the 50th anniversary of the company's founding.
Motown, of course, stands for more than just the historic music.
The label and its remarkable legacy is a reflection of the hard work dedicated individuals overcoming incredible
obstacles to achieve great success. Nearly a half-century ago, on January 12, 1959, to be exact, a young African-American songwriter named Berry Gordy founded Tamla Records with a loan of $800 from his family, marking the birth of the "Motown Records Corporation." A man of vision, drive, talent and determination, Berry Gordy was also a producer, innovative entrepreneur, and teacher. The phenomenal success of Motown Records is a tribute to all that he embodies and all the talent that he brought out in others. Under his leadership, and through determination and support of the Motown family of artists, Gordy forged new grounds for minorities and made the "Motown Sound" a worldwide phenomenon beloved by millions.

Berry Gordy always learned from all his experiences and applied them to his business. He put the tedious time he spent working on the assembly line at Detroit's Lincoln-Mercury automobile plant to good use: "Every day I watched how a bare metal frame, rolling down the line would come off the other end, a spanking brand new car. What a great idea! Maybe, I could do the same thing with my music. Create a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door, an unknown, go through a process, and come out another door, a star." That little thought that came to him while running up and down that assembly line became a reality we now know as "Motown."

When Motown was housed in its famed "Hitsville U.S.A." offices at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, it was not just a location; history would be made there. In fact, Berry Gordy created a twenty-four hour hit-making and artist development factory, nurturing the artistic talent of the singers, writers, producers, as well as, corporate executives. Today, Motown is not only the greatest pop music hit factory ever heard, but an institution, a state of mind, a way of life, a style, the "Sound of Young America." The distinctive, upbeat and uplifting music brought together pop and soul, white and black, old and young, like never before and continues to this day. Regardless of race or social background, teenage girls admired Diana Ross and teenage boys pretended to be Smokey Robinson. Motown became the heartbeat of American pop music.

With multi-platinum artists ranging from The Miracles, The Temptations, The Four Tops and The Supremes to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and The Jackson 5, the House That Gordy Built had and has no rival. Motown defined the term "crossover" not only on record and stage, but also behind the scenes. After breaking down barriers and having pop radio embrace Motown artists, Berry Gordy set his sights on television. He booked his artists on popular shows such as American Bandstand and the Ed Sullivan Show, making history as the first African-American artists on these shows. After captivating national audiences with repeat performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Supremes were the first R&B act to play the country's most prestigious night club, New York's Copacabana, which paved the way for other R&B acts into the top cabaret circuits around the world.

Motown was first African-American-owned record label to reach widespread national acclaim, Motown broke down racial prejudice by becoming the most successful independent record company in history and the most successful African-American owned business in America.
After Gordy purchased that first Detroit property, he converted the garage into a small recording studio and the kitchen into the control room. The company's first signing was The Miracles, led by Smokey Robinson, and its first release was Marv Johnson's "Come to Me," January 21, 1959. But its first major hit was Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)," a song co-written by Gordy himself, which reached No 2 on Billboard's R&B chart in 1960. A year later, The Miracles would score the company's first million seller with "Shop Around." That same year, teen girl group The Marvelettes landed the company's first pop No. 1, "Please Mr. Postman," while the label signed two young groups,

The Supremes and The Temptations. Within three years, those two groups would lead Motown into the mainstream, when The Supremes launched an unprecedented string of five consecutive No. 1 hits, starting with "Where Did Our Love Go," while The Temptations released the eternal Motown classic,

"My Girl." In 1968 the company had five records out of the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and accomplished another unprecedented feat by seizing the top three spots for a full month.
Upon his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Motown's founder was given the following tribute: "Gordy endeavored to reach across the racial divide with music that could touch all people, regardless of the color of their skin. Under his tutelage, Motown became a model of black capitalism, pride and self-expression and a repository for some of the greatest talent ever assembled at one company... Motown's stable of singers, songwriters, producers and musicians took the concept of simple, catchy pop songs to a whole new level of sophistication and, thanks to the music's roots in gospel and blues, visceral intensity... After Motown, black popular music would never again be dismissed as a minority taste... Aesthetically no less than commercially, Motown's achievements will likely remain unrivaled and untoppable."

Today, the label is part of the Universal Music Group, with its classic recorded music catalog managed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The timeless songs from Motown between 1959 and 1985 are represented by EMI Music Publishing.

From late 2008 to the end of 2009, Universal Music Group and EMI Music Publishing will mark the historic Detroit label's musical achievements with a series of initiatives. Notably, Universal Music Enterprises will issue monthly music releases in both physical and digital formats, with bonus tracks enhancing these packages. Details will be announced as each new package approaches.
Also upcoming throughout the celebration are releases of classic Motown Television specials in a series of DVD collections and INSIDE MOTOWN, a multi-part documentary on how the company was built.

That is so fantastic and deserved to be celebrated. i am so glad that the jacksons are a part of this great family. i am also happy that the jacksons did manage to marry into the family too, so that legacy is a part of theirs too. I'm very pleased. The most successful recording company. Pity Mj didn't buy it to add to his coloection. I forgive berry gordy for not paying the artist enough. he made them into legends which is worth a lot more than the money would at the time. Thanks Berry. I love you,

Re: September 26 - 28 News and Mentionings

MJJC STAFF: Who ever decided with CLOSING MJ: PRESENT & FUTURE I have a HUGE problem with that and should have talked it over WITH me prior to closing it..

That thread has been open for YEARS now and is more than just about a new exclusive, if you were to tell people not to talk about that subject for now, that's fine.. But to close it in my opinion is WRONG..

That is like closing down the mjjc picture thread because of what someone posts in there.. U would just tell the person not to POST it there again.. simple as that.. NOT close the whole thread..
Next time post your "exclusive news" as soon as you'll be able to post it and DO NOT let the members wait for it. Surely you didn't read the latest 3 pages of the thread before posting your reply here.

We'll re-open your thread as soon as we'll add a disclaimer.

Regards.

Sony sues bar for copyright infringement

9/25/2008 1:43 PM
By Audrey Holsclaw -Monongalia Bureau

MORGANTOWN -- Does being aware of copyright infringement constitute liability? This is the central question in case against a Morgantown restaurant that has found itself in the middle of a copyright infringement case.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee has just approved the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Act, Archie's Bar & Grill in Morgantown has been accused of infringing on several copyrights at a high price of between $750 and $30,000 per song by Sony/ATV Tunes, LLC, Mighty Underdog Music, David Matthews of Colden Gray, Ltd., WB Music Corp., Ain't Nothing but Funkin' Music, Elvis Mambo Music, TVT Music Enterprises, LLC, 50 Cent Music, Innocent Bystander, Write Treatage Music, and Universal Polygram International Publishing, Inc.

The above named companies are alleging seven counts of copyright infringement, stemming from live entertainment performed on Thursday nights at the famous biker bar. Those infringed compositions, performed by unnamed bands at Archie's, are "Before He Cheats," a Carrie Underwood song owned by Mighty Underdog Music and Sony/ATV Tunes; "Independence Day," a Gretchen Peters song owned by Sony/ATV Tunes; "Like A Virgin," a Madonna song owned by Sony/ATV Tunes; "Ants Marching," a David Matthews Band song owned by David Matthews of Colden Grey; "In Da Club," a 50 Cent song owned by WB Music Corp., Ain't Nothing but Funkin' Music, Music of Windswept, Blotter Music, and Elvis Mambo Music; "Candy Shop," another 50 Cent song owned by TVT Music Enterprises and 50 Cent Music; and "Black," a Pearl Jam song owned by Innocent Bystander, Write Treatage Music, and Universal Polygram International Publishing.

Filed on Sept. 3, the suit alleges that the plaintiffs sent numerous warning letters to Archie's Bar & Grill as well as its owners, also named as defendants, Steven and Linda Barnes.

Filed by Daniel Schuda of the Charleston firm of Schuda & Associates, the suit alleges that while the performances of these songs caused "great injury" to the plaintiffs, the damage it caused "cannot be accurately computed" or quantified to a specific dollar amount.

The plaintiffs also allege that the continuing performances of bands within the restaurant's walls will cause irreparable injury and suffering.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court because of the amount in controversy, which could be up to $210,000 not including attorney's fees or interest, and jurisdiction over copyright and intellectual property.

The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction to prevent any more public performances of the aforementioned songs, statutory damages up to $210,000, and litigation costs.

Michael Jackson NEWS?

Surprised this wasn't on the news thread for today. And NO this isn't from RF but some guy named Neil Sean who is a FOX News Channel contributor

I spent some time with the stunning Pamela Anderson this week. She is in town to promote her fab new show “Pam: Girl on the Loose.“ Smart, funny and extremely sharp when it comes to business, she had all the guys falling in love with her from the minute she arrived.
Pam tells me that she has been taking calls from Michael Jackson. "He really wants me to be in his comeback video and yeah, musically I am a huge fan," she said.

Even more than "The Evolution ...," "Something Else" nods to Thicke's old school R&B sensibility with direct sonic references to Motown, Curtis Mayfield and Philadelphia soul. He also got to tap into the spirit of vintage Michael Jackson, using horn players whose credits include Michael Jackon's "Off the Wall."

Michael Jackson takes himself so seriously,” said Jonathan Dagan, leafing through a salad. Over dinner, the Haifa-born producer and frontman for J.Viewz, an electronica and trip-hop project from Tel Aviv, was explaining the inspiration behind his cover of “Smooth Criminal,” a down-tempo lounge treatment of the Jackson classic.

“Our version is a parody of that seriousness. It’s honest,” said Dagan, energetic and talkative in a sweatshirt and jeans. “It shines a new light on Michael Jackson.” Although it may sound paradoxical, Dagan’s description is right on: the song is an honest parody. In replacing Jackson’s frenetic elements with a slower tempo and sweet, loping vocals, the song is both irreverent and straightforward, a minimalist send-up with an aesthetic that characterizes most of the J.Viewz catalogue: smart, edgy, and altogether engaging.

After Lil Mama's performance came my absolute favorite portion of the show. If you read my blog frequently, you know I've been disappointed with current trends in commercial dance. So when the top crews from ABDC performed a 20 minute long homage to Michael and Janet Jackson, I was in old school heaven! From "Pretty Young Thing" to "If," the crews did their best to capture the essence of the Jackson style. After all, it was Michael Jackson who made hip-hop dancing mainstream with his now historic music videos in the 1980s. It was really interesting to see dancers from today's hip-hop world perform classic choreography - they definitely grasped the choreography, but something was missing. I can't put my finger on what it was, but the dances looked slightly lethargic, lifeless, and well, kinda boring. It was a real shame to see that hip-hop dancers of today don't have the skills and versatility to perform older pieces of choreography. Nonetheless, I was thrilled to see the very necessary Michael and Janet homage and happy they put it in the show.

Robin Thicke made a very good living out of songwriting - penning songs for Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson and Usher, among others, in the early 2000s.

Reggie Prim is 40. A current Minneapolis resident, he spent his childhood being raised with the Black Hebrews in their spiritual capitol of Dimona, Israel. As a kid, he sang with the music group the Tonistics - a religious soul group modeled after the Jackson 5. The Tonistics' songs were recorded in the early 1970s. They've just been re-released.

Reggie was captivated. He auditioned and got into the Tonistics. It was the happiest he'd been since he was four. As a kid in a soul group modeled after the Jackson Five, Reggie sometimes found himself playing the part of Michael Jackson in the group.

Sparks discovered that she would like to write more songs. She'll have that chance at some point in 2009 when her tour ends.
"But I don't want to think about the future too much," Sparks said. "I'm focusing on the tour."
Opener Jesse McCartney joins Sparks for a version of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel."
"We both love the song," Sparks said. "It's a fun duet. It's cool that Jesse is on this tour since he's not much older than me since he's (21). He's made this tour so much fun."

Ohh, exciting! So it isn't just a rumor after all. Take that Pam haters, lol. I like that she's been talking about how she admires Michael too. Pam is a smart woman.

I like the comment about how todays hip hop dancers basically suck when you throw anything other then popping, locking and breaking at them. Because it's true. They're highly limited and their initial movement from step to step isn't that good at all. I keep telling people this, but no one believes it.

And Jesse McCartney singing "TWYMMF"? Gag me with a spoon. That's the same little f***** who said if Michael ever came near him, he'd cut his dick off. So f*** Jesse McCartney and his no talent ass.
